All four of Madagascar's endemic turtle and tortoise species are sadly threatened with extinction (Critically Endangered). These beautiful and tenacious animals have existed on the island for many millions of years, but human activities (including exploitation for the illegal pet trade and bushmeat) are now pushing them to the brink. Fortunately, many associations are working to protect Madagascar's tortoises, such as the Turtle Survival Alliance and Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
