The Zebra rocks are a collection of rocks along the Marangu route on Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a black and white striped pattern that resembles that of a Zebra. Predominantly a lava cliff, the rocks were formed when unusually mineral rich rain water flowed down on the rocks, turning them partially white or black in some places. www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

Rising majestically above the African plains, the 19,341' Mt. Kilimanjaro has beckoned to climbers since the first recorded summit in 1889. Today almost 25,000 people attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro annually. Approximately two-thirds are successful at reaching the top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world. www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

Although it does not have the highest elevation, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest free standing mountain in the world, rising 15,100' from its base, and includes Uhuru peak, the highest peak in Africa at 19,340'. Uhuru is Swahili for "Freedom", it got the name in 1961 when Tanzania gained its independence. The views from the top can be incredible, with the lunar landscape of the crater itself, the dramatic glaciers and if you are lucky, far reaching views over the plains of Africa! www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

Mt. Kilimanjaro consists of three volcanic peaks. Kibo is the youngest of these three peaks, it’s most recent activity being in the Pleistocene era. Only on Kibo can you see the concentric craters still intact. At the top of Kibo is the Kibo Crater, the main crater you see from the summit. Within the Kibo Crater there is the Reusch Crater, and within that, at the very center of the volcanic cone, lies the Ash pit where many fumaroles still emit hot sulphur and steam gasses today. All three of the craters are visible from Uhuru peak on a clear day. www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

In Swahili they say, “Pole-pole” and it means “Slowly, slowly.” It’s one of the secrets to helping hikers acclimatize as they gain elevation on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Going slowly prevents over exertion, keeps the heart rate down and helps the body retain water instead of panting it away. www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

Mt. Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb and any average fit person can trek it without problems. But it must be taken seriously because of it's high altitude (19,340'). We arrange treks carefully to support climbers in their acclimation. There's no need for an ice axe or crampons. You may encounter sections of rock scrambling that may require you to use your hands, so you need to be in good physical condition. With advance conditioning and the proper equipment, any driven person can make it to the top!! www.MtKilimanjaroadventures.com

There’s much more to Mt. Kilimanjaro's glaciers than meets the eye. These cathedrals of gleaming blue-white ice are dynamic repositories of climatic history. You would think that with the intensely strong equatorial sun, glaciers wouldn’t exist at all on Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is the brilliant white color of the ice that allows it to survive as it reflects most of the heat. The dull black lava rock on which the glacier rests, on the other hand, does absorb the heat. So while the glacier’s surface is unaffected by the sun’s rays, the heat generated by the rocks underneath can lead to glacial melting. www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

From 13,200' to 16,500' on Mt. Kilimanjaro is the ecological zone known as the Alpine Desert. This is a harsh, dry, windy region, consisting mostly of bare rock and ice. The temperature of this area ranges from below freezing at night to over 100 °F during the day. The air is very thin, and radiation from the sun can be intense. It rains less than 10 inches per year, and the thin soils retain little of what does materialize so there are very few plants, mostly lichens and small mosses. The views are stunning, both out over the undulating savannah far below and up toward Mt. Kilimanjaro's ice covered summit. www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com

The Rongai route is the only route to approach Kibo from the north. This is an isolated route less frequented by trekkers, it is likely that you will encounter wildlife, as animals tend to gather where humans don’t. Trekkers will also be rewarded by the vast number of unique plant life that is prevalent in the rainforest, mooreland and alpine desert zones. There is a huge variety of flora living on Mt. Kilimanjaro! The plant life changes dramatically throughout the 5 diverse climatic zones, from the rainforest at the base to the arctic glaciers on the summit. The Dendrosenecio kilimanjari is a rather intriguing giant groundsel found in the Mooreland zone from 11,000' - 13,200'. This one is near Barranco camp on the Machame route. Book your trip on the Machame route and you will see these as well as many other very interesting species of plant life! www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com/machame-6-days

Mt. Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 43 miles west of Mt. Kilimanjaro, just north of the city of Arusha. At a height of 14,968' it is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and the second highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mt. Kilimanjaro. Much of its bulk was lost about 8,000 years ago due to an eastward volcanic blast. Most recently Meru had a minor eruption in 1910. The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity. Visit the website and book your adventure to the summit of Mt. Meru!! www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com/mt-meru-4-days

The Marangu route, nick named the "Coca-Cola route" has a moderate slope, making it less difficult to climb. It is the most popular and the easiest route up to the summit of Kilimanjaro and is the only route on Kilimanjaro with huts, having dormitory and dining rooms. Marangu is ideal for those who are not confident in their ability to hike over steeper paths. It's also attractive for those who do not want to sleep in a tent. Marangu's huts offer shelter and warmth against the weather so it is also a decent choice if climbing during the rainy season. Contact me and book your Mt. The Machame route is a challenging and at times steep trek with stunning scenery as it traverses through Kilimanjaros 5 diverse climatic zones. This route provides the opportunity to “trek high and sleep low” which is considered important in minimizing the potential for altitude sickness. This will most likely be the route of our first adventure! Contact me to join the first group, or to plan a future trip, or even if you are just curious and have some questions. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro will be the adventure of a lifetime!! http://www.mtkilimanjaroadventures.com/machame-7-days
