🐧 They are the second-largest penguin species, standing up to 100 cm tall

🦑 King penguins can dive to depths of over 300 meters in search of fish and squid!

⏰ Unlike other penguins, their chicks take nearly a year to fledge due to the colder climates

🐧 South Georgia is home to some of the largest king penguin colonies in the world, with tens of thousands of them gathering along its shores!

At Epic Polar, we specialize in taking adventurers to the breathtaking South Georgia, where you can witness these incredible animals in their natural habitat. Imagine walking alongside vibrant colonies of king penguins, surrounded by towering glaciers and dramatic landscapes.

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Ocean, South Georgia is home to one of the planet’s most incredible wildlife spectacles: the fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) colonies. These remarkable creatures, once on the brink of extinction due to overhunting, now thrive in the millions on this remote island.

Did you know?
Their dense underfur keeps them warm in icy waters, giving them their name 😉

Also, males can weigh up to 200kg and defend their harems fiercely during breeding season!

Visiting South Georgia offers a rare glimpse into their world—watching pups playfully tumble across the shores while adults dive for food in the crystal-clear waters.

Antarctica's sea ice plays a vital role in regulating global climate patterns and supporting marine ecosystems. Covering approximately 1.5 million square kilometers during the winter months, this ice acts as a critical habitat for various species, including seals and penguins. Moreover, it reflects sunlight, helping to maintain the Earth's temperature and influencing ocean circulation ❄️

However, due to climate change, we are witnessing alarming declines in sea ice extent and thickness, which could have far-reaching consequences for global weather patterns and biodiversity.

Now is the time to deepen your understanding of this fragile ecosystem.

Join us for a polar experience that combines adventure with education. Witness the majesty of Antarctica's sea ice firsthand and learn about its significance in our changing world.

Inhabiting the most southerly latitudes of any seal species, the Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) represents the pinnacle of Antarctic marine mammal adaptation, thriving in an environment where few creatures can survive.

Did you know?
These seals are particularly notable for their ability to create and maintain breathing holes in thick sea ice using their strong teeth 🦷🦭

Weddell seals are also exceptional divers, capable of reaching depths up to 900 meters and staying underwater for an impressive 96 minutes during hunting trips.
Their diet primarily consists of Antarctic
marine life, including fish, squid, and krill 🦐

We can't wait to introduce you to this remarkably well-adapted mammal of Antarctica.

Happy Antarctica day! 🇦🇶

December 1st is celebrated as Antarctic Day to commemorate the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on December 1, 1959.

Did you know?
This treaty established Antarctica as a region dedicated to peace and scientific research, banning military activity and mineral mining, and promoting international cooperation in environmental protection and scientific exploration!

Antarctic Day serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving this unique and fragile ecosystem, as well as the collaborative efforts of nations in understanding and protecting our planet's climate and biodiversity.

This is powerful! Isn't it?? ✨

News from the South ❄️

Our photographer has arrived in South Georgia aboard the Ocean Albatros to show you one of the most pristine and wild places on Earth.

📍First stop:
Grytviken, established in 1904 as a whaling station, quickly became the largest and most significant whaling facility in South Georgia.

The station was equipped with modern technology for its time, including steam-powered vessels and processing facilities that allowed for the efficient extraction of whale oil, which was highly sought after for use in lamps, soap, and other products.

However, the industry had devastating impacts on whale populations, leading to the decline of many species. By the mid-20th century, changing regulations and declining whale stocks resulted in the eventual closure of the station in 1965.

Grytviken is now a symbol of both the industrial past and the ongoing commitment to preserving South Georgia's unique ecosystem.

We can easily see the diverse wildlife, including Southern elephant seals, Antarctic fur seals, and king penguins, that thrives in this sheltered environment!

GIPSY COVE offers a wonderful opportunity to see the charming Magellanic penguins!

As our team approaches South Georgia Island, this will be the last chance to witness these adorable penguins during our Ocean Albatros adventures on this voyage.

Here’s a bit about them:
Magellanic penguins are medium-sized seabirds native to the southern coasts of South America, particularly in Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland Islands.

They are easily recognized by their striking black and white plumage, featuring a prominent black band across their chest and two white stripes on their heads.

Typically breeding in large colonies, they nest in burrows or under bushes to safeguard their eggs from predators, as you can see in this carousel (swipe right).

These penguins primarily feed on fish and squid, diving up to 100 meters to catch their prey.

Known for their strong pair bonds and elaborate courtship displays, Magellanic penguins are truly fascinating creatures to observe in their natural habitat!
