SEA ICE 🌊❄️

Did you know?
The sea ice of the Arctic is a remarkable and vital component of our planet's climate system. Acting as a natural reflector of sunlight, it helps regulate global temperatures by keeping the ocean cooler.

This ice also serves as a habitat for an array of wildlife, including polar bears, seals, and migratory birds, creating a unique ecosystem that thrives in extreme conditions.

In that way, seasonal patterns of sea ice formation and melting play a crucial role in the migration and breeding cycles of these animals, making it a cornerstone of Arctic life. Have you ever think about that before?

As climate change accelerates, the diminishing sea ice poses significant threats not only to Arctic wildlife but also to global weather patterns and sea levels.

This post It is a reminder of how interconnected our ecosystems are and the urgency of addressing climate change to preserve these fragile regions.

The more we travel and engage in sustainable ecotourism, the better we understand the bigger picture in order to protect this planet we all share.

ANTARCTICA: A must-visit destination on Our Planet

DID YOU KNOW?

🌍 It's considered the coldest place on Earth: Antarctica is the coldest continent, with temperatures reaching as low as -128.6°F (-89.2°C) at Vostok Station in July 1983. It's a place where the chill can be extreme.

🐧 It's home to unique wildlife:
Despite its harsh conditions, Antarctica is home to fascinating wildlife, including various species of penguins, seals, and seabirds. By curiosity, the Emperor Penguin is the only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter!

❄️ It's a desert of ice:
Antarctica is technically a desert because it receives very little precipitation. Fascinating isn't it? The continent is covered by about 70% of the world's fresh water, locked away in ice sheets that can be up to 2 miles thick!

Once in Antarctica, you may be lucky enough to find the incredible Crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophaga) resting on the ice!

And if you've been following us for a while, you know already that although its popular name suggests that this species of seal feeds on crabs, they actually feed mainly on krill, which has a natural red - ish color.

And this is the one that stains its p**p red, so what you see in the photo is not blood, but 🦐💩😄

You can learn about this and other wildlife curiosities from the highly qualified expedition guides of our chosen cruise operators!

Exploring the Arctic Tundra in Llulissat, Greenland!

This landscape highlights this unique biome found at the northernmost reaches of our planet. This is a fragile ecosystem and it's defined by its cold, dry climate and permafrost.

This vast, treeless landscape spans parts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Scandinavia, featuring short summers and long, harsh winters.

However, despite its extreme conditions, the tundra supports a variety of resilient life:

In summer, colorful wildflowers, mosses, and lichens bloom, while animals like caribou, arctic foxes, and snowy owls thrive in this environment. Migratory birds also flock here to breed during the warm months.

The Arctic tundra is a stunning reminder of nature’s resilience, and safeguarding it is vital for maintaining our planet’s environmental balance.

Arctic or Antarctica? Do you know the similarities and differences between the two poles?

❄️The Arctic is a deep ocean covered by a thin layer of sea ice. On countries that are part of this region, we find arctic foxes, musk ox, walrus and of course, the polar bear, but no penguins.

🇦🇶Antarctica, on the other hand, is a continent (and not just an ocean) covered by a very thick ice cap and then surrounded by a border of sea ice that expand on winter and melts on summer, and the Southern Ocean.
Here we found penguins and no polar bears or the other species mentioned!

🌎Both polar regions are very important in regulating global temperature! ⬇️

ALBEDO EFFECT
Because sea ice has a bright surface, 50-70% of the incoming energy is reflected back to the atm. As sea ice melts, it exposes the ocean's dark surface and instead of reflecting it, 90% of the light is absorbed instead.

If the Arctic has been progressively melting over the past 5 decades and Antarctic sea ice is expanding less in winter, less light is reflected and more is absorbed by the ocean.

Absorbing more causes the ocean to warm and global temperatures to rise.

Did you know that Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) are one of the most fascinating species in the penguin family? With their striking orange beaks and distinctive white stripe over their eyes, these charming birds are a sight to behold in their natural habitat!

They are primarily found on the sub-Antarctic islands, including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the South Shetland Islands. They thrive in cold, icy environments and are well-adapted to life in harsh conditions.

Gentoo penguins are known for their unique nesting behavior. They build their nests with pebbles, which they collect from their surroundings. Males often compete to present the best pebbles to attract females, making nesting a fun and competitive affair!

Currently, they are classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, but they still face threats from climate change, overfishing, and habitat destruction. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure their populations remain stable.

They are not only a vital part of their ecosystem but also a reminder of the beauty and diversity of wildlife on our planet 🙏🏽
