The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has recorded its highest-ever monthly revenue generation. The 141-year-old mountain railway system connecting New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal is under the Guwahati-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). NFR officials said DHR earned ₹3.20 crore against an expenditure of ₹2.75-crore in May. The revenue collected was 54% more than the earlier highest of ₹2.07 crore recorded in May 2018.
“The DHR has earned more than ₹4.73-crore against an expenditure of ₹4.53-crore during the current fiscal beginning April.

Between its connection with the broad gauge line at New Jalpaiguri and its destination, Darjeeling, the 2’ gauge (610mm) Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway climbs 6,890 feet (2,100 meters) in 55 miles (88km), gaining altitude with 6 zig-zags and 5 loops. This photograph was taken in January 1981 at Batasia Loop, the first loop on the return journey from Darjeeling. The fireman breaks up coal in the bunker of B-Class No. 784 (Sharp Stewart & Co, Atlas Works, Manchester, No. 4977 of 1903), one of 34 0-4-0 locomotives of this class built for the line between 1889 and 1925.
