Michael J. Hoffman Photo Landscape, Nature and Commercial Photography. Seeing the ordinary in uncommon ways. Michael is an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop, Lightroom and Acrobat.

Michael Hoffman has been a photographer, artist, educator, and technophile for most of his life. Early in his career, he created technical illustrations and photographs for electronic equipment manufacturers. When digital cameras became widely available in the late 1990s, the move was a natural one, and has led to a happy combination of technology, software, photography and art. Being a native of

Florida, Michael's favorite photographic subjects tend to be related to the outdoors, the wildlife, and the scenery of the Sunshine State. However, he does travel a lot, and tends to bring cameras with him around the globe, so you'll find many diverse and interesting subjects in his portfolio. As an Adobe Community Professional, he continues his quest for excellence in art, excellence in design, and excellence in education.

Downtown St. Petersburg taken from the bay, on July 4th just prior to a beautiful fireworks display. Best seats in the house, although Mother Nature's light show was a tough act to follow!

Black Skimmer Chicks at St Pete Beach

With several active nesting colonies of Black Skimmers along the Pinellas County shoreline, I'm glad to have the opportunity to continue to capture these wonderful birds and their little fuzzball chicks. I'm happy to say that the people walking along the beach have been very courteous and interested in the bird stewards' efforts to protect the colonies.

Black Skimmer chicks at Indian Shores!

This past weekend, Carol Hoffman and I were able to visit the Bird Stewards at the Black Skimmer colony in Indian Shores. With over 80 chicks running around, the cuteness was overwhelming! Thanks to Claudia Christiansen and the rest of the volunteers for showing us the ropes (literally); we hope to be able to volunteer as stewards ourselves going forward... in whatever spare time we can muster.

When it’s winter in Florida, even the middle of December is a wonderful time to be out of doors. The rest of the country is dealing with the frigid fingers of the winter jet stream! But here, we are enjoying weather in the 70s (that’s low 20s for the rest of the Celsius world), with mostly clear skies.

Warm days. Comfortable nights. And beautiful sunsets, like this one at Pass-A-Grille Beach. This is how we do winter in Florida, and I’ve no complaints whatsoever.

Ospreys Three

For our summer vacation, we visited Marco Island, Florida, and during our stay, we were fortunate to enjoy The Dolphin Explorer – a “three hour tour” that was part eco-education, part dolphin-watching, and part just plain fun. The guides were great! During our cruise through the edge of Florida’s 10,000 Islands, I captured these three ospreys sitting in a nest atop a channel marker in the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Magic Behind You

Sometimes when your shooting photos, they say, you need to turn around to see what’s behind you. Such was the case recently when I was watching a beautiful Florida sunset. I turned around by chance, and the sky to the east was illuminated by the setting sun – and it was magical.
