Our story
Often described as ‘the little Switzerland of England’ Matlock Bath is a picturesque village in the heart of Derbyshire. This unique village has been welcoming visitors since the early 1700’s after the discovery of the warm springs and when it became fashionable for the Georgians and later, the Victorians to bathe in the warm spa waters and enjoy the wonderful scenery. At the time Matlock Bath drew the rich and famous including a young Princess Victoria and a long list of well-known poets and writers including Lord Byron and Mary Shelley.
The village lies in deep valley alongside the magnificent river Derwent surrounded by dramatic limestone crag cliffs including the High Tor.
Today Matlock Bath is ‘like being at the seaside without the sea’ and the tourists still come to enjoy the scenery, walk in the old Victorian park lands and stop off at the shops, cafes and restaurants on the old Parade. Heights of Abraham and the cable car ride to the top provide wonderful views of Matlock Bath and the Peak District. Day-trippers come every weekend to people watch and look the motorbikes that often stop off on the Parade over the busy weekends of Summer.
