This is a Francesinha. It's a Portuguese sandwich that originated in Porto comprised of several layered meats, topped with cheese and a special beer sauce. There really are no words that can accurately describe how GOOD this sandwich was. It was, hands-down - one of the best things I have ever eaten.

What's important to know is that in Porto, not all Francesinhas are created equally. It's like going to Philadelphia for a world-famous Philly Cheesesteak... the sandwiches are sold everywhere, but one has to know where to go to get a really great and authentic one!

Some friends we met in Porto went to a random sandwich shop and did NOT get an authentic Francesinha. Using a travel professional that has actually travelled to a location you're interested in can give you the inside track to the REAL DEAL Francesinha!
