Visit "Sai Ngam" ( Banyan Tree ) Forest in Phimai, Just 1.7 km outside Phimai Historical Park is the Sai Ngam Banyan tree grove. The intertwined, entangled roots and stems of a single banyan tree form a spooky 1350 sqm roofed forest. Banyan trees (also Bodhi tree) are regarded sacred as Buddha reached enlightenment under a Banyan tree. The roots and tendrils grow up and down to come up again to form new trees again, but all connected.

Inside, under the canopy are several pathways, ponds, bridges, a few shrines and even the inevitable souvenir shop. Also, plenty of food carts around so you can have your lunch under the tree shade at one of the many picnic tables.

Ayutthaya, named after the holy Hindu city of ‘Ayodhya’, is extremely important to Thailand as the former capital before Bangkok. Technically, it was Thonburi before Bangkok but now it is a pretty much a part of the city right across the Chao Phraya River.

Ayutthaya is 82 km north of Bangkok city and takes about an hour and a half to reach by road. The ancient city of Ayutthaya or the ‘Ayutthaya Historical Park’ lies in the centre surrounded on all sides by Chao Phraya River and its tributaries making it somewhat of an island.

This remote village is a place where jungles and sparkling temples meet the exotic charm of rural life in Thailand.

Nestled on the low hills where the road ends, completely surrounded by an endless stretch of forest-covered limestone ranges, Sangkhlaburi offers one of the most picturesque landscapes in all of Thailand. Back in the days, the Sangkhlaburi was traditionally a Karen town but has recently seen an influx of Burmese and Thai people which created a culturally diverse environment that just adds to the town’s remote charm.

You can also make out that the maintenance of the place is far below the standards of Thailand’s other temples and tourist destinations. Just next to the staircase you can find a signpost that says that you must make a wish before you climb upwards.

As you walk around the premises, you will realise how many animal statues are hidden around. There is a large while elephant, a peacock, a white rabbit and a pod of dolphins. A small bridge has a group of people signifying the importance of monks as they lead the wheel of the nation.

Lampang (ลำปาง) is a Northern province studded with mountain ranges that hold some national parks. It also has a charming capital city (Lampang City) that people say is a smaller and less touristy Chiang Mai.

Lampang is a northern province located east of Chiang Mai. The province is fairly popular with Thai tourists who love visiting its famous temples and soaking in the Northern Thai Lanna culture in a place slightly less modern and crowded than Chiang Mai. Lampang city also has small horse-drawn carts that until recently were used as transportation and today survive to carry tourists and be in photos.

There are some mountain ranges, waterfalls, caves, hot springs, and national parks in the province, though none as nice as the more famous ones around the North. For us, the highlight of the province is Wat Chalermprakiat – a beautiful temple perched at the top of a forest-covered limestone mountain. It is among the most unique temples in all of Thailand, and one that anyone can appreciate even if visiting temples isn’t their idea of a good time.

Visitor’s Guide (2024) – There are actually two beaches to be explored at this location!

Sai Nuan Beach in Koh Tao is low-key one of the most unspoiled beaches in Koh Tao. Located on the southwest coastline of Koh Tao Island, this location is the perfect hideaway from the more popular Koh Tao beaches.

If you happen to park in the first car park on the left-had side at the end of the road, follow the walking trail down from here and you will emerge on Sai Nuan Beach 2.

To get to Sai Nuan Beach 1, follow the shoreline around the corner, walk through the restaurant beneath the palms and you will arrive in less than 2-minutes.

A cozy bay is shaded by a coconut palm tree forest with a slackline and a tree swing between the palms! Sounds fun right?!

It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a day out with friends and family to soak up some sun, snorkel around the rocks, and beach bum while listening to the sounds of the waves and coral wind chimes about.

2 weeks in Thailand – where to go as a backpacker? Route for magical moments: The route for north AND south (entire route) mountains & islands

You don't want to miss out on any region on your vacation and have a little bit of everything? Traveling a lot doesn't stress you out, you love adventure and being on the go? You don't have to struggle with jet lag?

Then read my absolute highlights for 2 weeks in Thailand in the north and south - but one thing in advance: the route is tight. Thailand is bigger than Germany. Due to the distance, staying longer than 2 to 3 nights in one place is not possible .

Maybe you can also delete one or two stations and give yourself more space. Just read through my tips, you might notice that a place isn't that important to you. If so: skip it! :-)

Basically, I would recommend you choose the north OR the south if you only have 2 weeks for your trip to Thailand so that it doesn't get too hectic.

↘️Summary of the North-South route for 2 weeks Thailand

1. Arrive in Bangkok (at least 1 night + night drive to the north)
2. Mountain world in Chiang Dao & one day in Chiang Mai (at least 2 nights + night drive)
3. Tree house and temple in Ayutthaya (1 night + night trip) - cancel if necessary, but Bangkok and Chiang Dao longer
4. The island world in the south – decide on a region depending on the time of travel
5. Our favorite: Krabi – Let's get lost around Ao Nang and on the island of Koh Lanta , but only in the dry season from around mid-December to mid/end of March.
ALTERNATIVE 1: From February to the end of August you can travel to the island of Koh Phangan . And maybe take a detour to beautiful Chumphon beforehand.
ALTERNATIVE 2: From November to March the Koh Chang archipelago is blessed with lots of sunshine. If you choose this group of islands, exclude Khao Sok National Park (station 6) and Chumphon - these are not on the Thailand route. This leaves more time for island hopping!
6. Khao Sok National Park (2 nights) — cancel if necessary, but stay longer on the islands.
7. Bangkok (1 night)

Mo Paeng Waterfall (Namtok Mo Paeng) is low-key one of the best waterfalls in Pai.

This beautiful set of falls situated up in the hills on the outskirts of Pai has everything you need for a day of fun in the sun!

Mo Paeng Waterfall is located 9km west of Pai. From the center of town, it’s approximately a 20-minute drive. There is no entrance fee to visit this stunning waterfall, just park in the designated parking area under the trees, and from here it’s less than one minute to walk to reach the base of the falls.

An old town community of Phichit province located near the Nan River. Wang Krod was once a prosperous area for trading. It is the intersection of transportation by land and water and is considered a major commercial center of the province. Later on, when most of the world has changed, the trading is not as active as in the past. However, some shops are still opened to succeed their ancestors. For example, grocery stores, food stores, dessert stores, traditional antique shops, drug stores, barbershops, etc. In the present, the area has once again become bustle due to the province has promoted this place as a tourist attraction.

What should be applause for of this area is the fact that it still preserved the architecture since the past. If you come to visit this place, you can see the simple and traditional way of living, without any additives. Behind the community lies the shrine of Chao Pho Wang Klom, a very sacred shrine, which is well respected by the people of this neighborhood. At the front of the community is the neo-classical Phichit railway station, which is still on service till today. Furthermore, this area also has a pedestrian shopping street where local people are given opportunity to sell their belongings and food for both the people of Phichit and foreigners, as a way to distribute income to the community. The shopping market will be open every Saturday evening. Whoever likes the charming old day atmosphere, this community is the best place for you.

Phu Phan Noi viewpoint in Nong Bua Lamphu

There’s really not much to do here except hop around on the boulders (carefully!) and take in the views. There is a hiking trail as well that may be nice but as it was the middle of the day we skipped that. When you arrive the cliff edge is in front of you, and as you follow it up to your left it becomes an elevated pathway through the forest. A five-minute walk along this takes you to a platform at the end on top of a high cliff with more views out that are similar to what you see from elsewhere. It’s a long way down, be careful.

Although Koh Kood is one of the biggest islands in Thailand, it only has a population of 1,500, making it an untouched paradise to stay away from the crowd. One of Koh Kood’s gems is Kluai beach.

Kluai is still barely developed compared to many other beaches in Thailand. With crystal clear water, white-golden sand, rocky coastline, and swaying palm trees, the color here is so vibrant that it’s almost unreal. There is a hidden gem in the jungle called Klong Chao Waterfall which cascades throughout the year and provides an idyllic swimming spot. Don’t forget to spend time spotting marine life and reefs which are not been touched by mass tourism yet.
