Global Tours with Robert Byrd This page provides information about our tour group, which travels all over the world. These tours included trips to every corner of the world.

Dr. Milton Wheeler, a well known history professor at William Carey University, began organizing tours for his students and friends in the late 1960s. After Dr. Wheeler's health made it impossible for him to continue leading these tours, Robert Byrd, one of his former students and a frequent traveler with the group, agreed to continue to schedule trips with Dr. Wheeler's input and guidance. Since

2012 the travel group, led by Robert, have traveled to the following countries: Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, France, Israel and Jordan. Our current trips planned for 2014 include, England, Wales, Scotland and France. Our group is comprised of people of all ages and walks of life. Our regular travelers come from all regions of Mississippi, as well as Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Florida, California, Washington, and other states. We always welcome new people who share our love of travel.

Today we visited the Skogafoss waterfall and The Skogar Museum, which is a heritage museum dedicated to life in Iceland. It was very interesting and informative. We then stopped near Eyjafjallajökull volcano/glacier, which when it last erupted in 2010, shut down air travel between North America and Europe for over a week. We are now on our way to Reykjavik for the last two days of our trip.

We have had another amazing day here in Iceland. Our first visit was to yet another waterfall, Seljalandsfoss. We then had some free time in the town of Vik, to brave the wind to see their black sand beaches, grab some lunch and do some shopping. We then visited Kirkjugolfia, a group of hexagonal basalt columns which rise out of the ground and look like a tile floor, then checked out another waterfall, Stjornarfoss, before continuing to what has been my favorite visit thus far, Fjaõrárgljufur. This is a huge valley carved by a river through lava fields, with incredible geological features. We hiked about a mile along the ridge overlooking the gorge. It is spectacular!

Today we continued touring the “Golden Circle” with visits to: Geyser geothermal area, with multiple geysers and various hot springs; then on to Faxafoss, yet another beautiful waterfall; Friðheimar farm, where we toured their tomato greenhouses, ate tomato soup for lunch and watched an Icelandic horse riding demonstration; and, finally we visited Skálholt Cathedral, a modern building constructed as the most recent in a line of churches erected on this site dating back to 1056. It has been another busy, but interesting day.

This afternoon we toured Thingvellir National Park, site of the World’s oldest existing Republic. The Icelandic parliament began meeting here in 930AD, for two weeks every summer. It lies in a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Late post after a busy day. This morning we travelled to Ólafsvík, Iceland, and boarded a boat to cruise along the North Atlantic coast of Western Iceland in search of whales and other marine life. We found a lot of Orca whales and dolphins, as well as lots of birds. Afterwards we explored the town of Ólafsvík a bit.

It has been a great first day in Iceland. We landed at Keflavik airport near Reykjavik at 6:30am, and immediately started exploring. Some of the sites included, the fissure between the Northern American and Eurasian tectonic plates, a geothermal hot springs and the surrounding molten fields, some amazing North Atlantic coastal views and finally a visit to a heritage museum to learn about the settlement of Iceland by early Viking settlers in the late ninth century. Then we had lunch!

This afternoon and evening was our first “slow” time, as we enjoyed cruising upriver. These are just a few pictures I took from the ship. If you look closely you will see a lot of water buffalo, and other animals along the river bank.

We started off early today, with a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings, then toured the actual Valley itself, including numerous tombs which are still in incredible condition after more than 3,000 years. We crossed the Nile by small boats twice, and are now back on board our ship sailing up the Nile.

On our last full day in Ireland, we spent the afternoon in Dublin, visiting Trinity College and the 1,200 year old Book of Kellls, which consist of the four gospels of The New Testament, which were copied by hand by four monks in illuminated manuscripts. We also did a bit of wandering before returning to our hotel for the evening.
