The temperature dropped 20 degrees after a rainstorm last week. Typical occurrence in Rome that marks the change in season from summer to autumn. We had 60 days where the temperature didn't drop below 35 degrees. And it was often higher. We had a long hot summer that started in June so it's great to finally feel cool and have energy to catch up with friends. A lovely cool evening watching lightening move over the lake as we ate seasonal lamb chops from the grill, autumn porcini mushrooms and grilled purple lettuce with a delicious local red blend of lazio cesanese grapes and shiraz.

My favorite summer breakfast. Fresh goat's cheese ricotta, seasonal figs and local honey. Ricotta is made fresh daily, it's creamy, heavy but with a subtle flavour.

Spent a wonderful morning in Trajans forum which I had never actually visited. The views over piazza venezia, the forum of the republic and the vittorio Emmanuelle building are wonderful and the museum is full of original sculptures and recreations that bring the forum to life along with the forum of Minerva and Augustus as well as the temple of peace that used to cover this entire area. The Romans built such magnificent public places for business, worship and socializing that also celebrated their victories, gratitude, vengeance, and justice. The forums are still partly covered and integrated into medieval castles, convents, and palaces that came later. So visiting these sights is like going backwards into time and discovering all the many literal layers of Rome's history. I spent so long wandering around the Roman empire and then the world of medieval Rome, it was a jolt to come back to the present 😁

The colors of an Italian summer lunch plate. The pure white of a mozzarella cheese made with the milk from the Italian water buffalo, made only in the campagna region of Italy and delivered fresh every day to Rome. Accompanied always by either fresh red tomatoes and green basil or pink salty prosciutto. I like both 😉. I have also added the seasonal crispy purple cabbage that has a peppery kick. What else is on a typical summer table? Soft green valerian leaves as a salad. A creamy goat camenbert, juicy peaches which are only available in the summer and of course accompanied by a fruity white wine from the Italian alps. Love summer! Well actually all the seasons and the unique and different foods and wines that go with them. The contrasts, anticipation, and scarcity all make life so enjoyable.

This never gets old for me!!! Nothing like the crisp, cool, white and acqua tones of running water to set off the blistering morning heat. Especially as Rome is a construction site at the moment. I feel sorry for those who have come to see it now. Piazza Venezia, the Vittoriana, Piazza Farnese and parts of the Roman forum are completely buried under scaffolding while every fountain (except this one) is boarded up. All in preparation for a special Holy year that begins in December and will bring millions more tourists. The stones of Rome are literally hot to the touch with no flowing water to cool it down and it's piazzas look lifeless without the constant tinkling and movement of their fountains. Rome's fountains are like living art installations that give the sense of being in an ever changing theatre set and there is something sad and lacking without them. So I am hanging out and appreciating this wonderful fountain that is still in its glory. I love the advertising for the European bank plastered on the side of a building that says 'because you are unique', playing off the presence of the one of a kind Trevi fountain but I don't think it quite works when on the other side of it are literally thousands of people trooping past day and night 😁

I love the Italian food of summer....... Friselle are a traditional simple summer lunch food. They look like dried, hard bagels. You run them under the tap to moisten them slightly, pat them dry with a paper towel then top them with tuna, tomatoes, capers, onions, lettuce, olive oil, lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. But you can choose any topping you like.

View from the terrace of FAO, the Food and agriculture organization of the United Nations, Rome. Views are over the Colosseum, hard to recognize as you don't usually see it from the top. You can just see the cupola of St Peter's in the distance. The ancient Roman forum and the circus maximus is also just within view.

Cheese, chocolate and wine my 3 favorite food groups. All available at a local vineria. My reward after being buried for 3 days developing an HR strategy. The Italian vineria a place where you can get a glass or bottle of wine and that's it. Maybe some cheese and salami. In this one they also specialize in rum and whisky. They had started to disappear but are making a come back and I am so happy!!! Enoteca Giansanti, Ostiense.

All in weekend in Rome. International ballet stars come together to perform in a series of dances from the most popular ballets. Truly amazing, as ballet becomes more athletic, I am seeing moves that were previously unimaginable and that take my breath away, at Rome's Parco Della Musica a modern day complex of amphitheatres for the performing arts. Coming home to a notice on the door announcing the visit of the local priest to bless the apartments in our block. Then custard cream filled deep fried donuts and cappuccino for brekky to celebrate st. Joseph's day (father's day).

Amazing lunch at another new place, Cibo Limata, with my lovely book scout friend Philippa. She does the research and the bookings and I just turn up. It's a match made in heaven. Polenta chips with black truffle butter and alpine cheese. Cuttlefish balls. Stuffed calamari and osso buco. Pistachio mousse. Greco di tufo white wine from a boutique vineria in Campania. We are spoilt with over 22 great restaurants in my suburb or the wonderful center of Rome so I don't often venture to new areas. But phillipas choices are always great! This one is in Piazza Bologna.

Breakfast of champions!! We are in that weird in between period. Carnivale, when the small deep fried custard cream filled balls are made, has just finished and there are still 3 weeks before father's day (st Joseph day) when the large deep fried custard cream filled balls are made, so for now they are both available! Mine is the large one 😁.

The magnificent Medusa, acolyte of Athena, ravaged by poseidon, feared by all men, a head full of snakes that provided a non stop commentary of self doubt, the ability to turn people to stone and mercilessly hunted before being beheaded. All in a days work for the average goddess. Images surrounding her - the minatour (half bull, half man), the labrynthe where it lived and killed its annual sacrifices of ancient Greek royalty, and what can be legitimately described as a prototype of the Prada handbag.

Absolutely amazing! The colossos of Constantine recreated in its original size as it once sat in the roman forum inside the basilica maxentious. We still have the original head and feet which are in the capitoline museum. This recreation is on display for free in the museum gardens. For those who know their classical and Roman history, Constantine is depicted in the manner of the God jupiter, head of the roman gods, as an omage to the emperor.
