The Akechi Railway is an interesting railway that runs in the Akechi area of Gifu Prefecture. As well as some amazing countryside that can be seen from the train, the company also operates a special train most days with local food bentos (packed lunches) and in some seasons choices of Sake.

"TOKYO MARUTTO YAMANOTE" CHARTER TRAIN TO OPERATE ONE DAY DURING OBON

JR East will being running its "Tokyo Marutto Yamanote Line train in August after its very successful run in March. It will operate on Saturday 17th August with one train in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both trains will use the Outer Loop starting from Ikebukuro. E235系 train will be used. Advance booking is required.
This is the a good opportunity to travel around the Yamanote Line without stopping, however commentary will be provided giving information on the line.

NO UNRESERVED SEATS ON NOZOMI SHINKANSEN SERVICES (TOKAIDO & SANYO SHINKANSEN LINES) BETWEEN 9TH AUG AND 18TH 2024

It has been announced that for 2024 Obon holiday period all Nozomi service trains on the Tokaido / Sanyo shinkansen Lines (Tokyo~Nagoya~Kyoto~Osaka~Hiroshima~Fukuoka) will be all reserved seats. Hikari, Kodama, Sakura & Mizuho services will have unreserved seats, but general experience is that these trains get very crowded in unreserved cars for many services (i.e. 100% plus capacity)
Note also that on JR East shinkansen lines the higher fare (for most days the shinkansen fare is at a discount rate) during the Obon period. (and JR East ordinarily runs many trains that are All Reserved cars)

𝐉𝐑 𝐒𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐧 𝟏𝟖 𝐊𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐮 (𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝟏𝟖 𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭)
For those travelling to Japan during the mid July~early September period, there is a railway ticket that offers great value for those who want to get off the beaten track...The Seishun 18 Kippu, Designed for college students to use during their Winter, Spring and Summer breaks, there is actually no age or college attendance requirement to use the ticket (in fact a big user of these tickets are retired people). It allows travel on all local and ordinary rapid JR trains throughout the country. It is valid for 5 non consecutive days or can be used by 5 people travelling together for 1 day, or any other combination. It costs Y12,050 which means Y2,410 average per day or per person, which is not that difficult to achieve, and because it is valid for non consecutive days you could use it in conjunction with shinkansen and Limited Express travel (which you need to pay for). In fact there are 1000s of different things you could do with this ticket, although needs a bit of planning...
For 2024 the summer season ticket is valid from 20th July till 10th September. [Winter ticket is normally valid December thru to 10th Jan, and Spring ticket March thru to early April It is not valid on shinkansen, Limited Express or reserved seats on rapid trains].
