While writing a book about volcanoes, the question I am constantly asked is, 'When will the Yellowstone Super Volcano erupt again?' Although this topic attracts significant media interest, the probability of another super eruption is negligible, at approximately 0.0000001%. This conclusion is based on recurrence intervals and data suggesting a limited magma supply in the upper reservoir. In contrast, the likelihood of gentle, effusive, basaltic eruptions is considerable. Since the last super eruption occurred 640,000 years ago, there have been 80 non-explosive events, which aligns with the fact that the lower chamber is 4.4 times larger than the upper chamber.

Below are two diagrams that illustrate the impact of the last 3 super volcano eruptions along the Yellowstone Hot Spot track (Jovanelly, in press).

AGT goes to PATAGONIA in 2026!
Over the course of 14-days we show you 2,000 miles of Patagonia starting with the driest desert in the world (Atacama) and traveling all the way to the southern tip of Chile to visit the penguins. In doing this, we will explore 5 regions and 6 ecosystems, hitting the highlights of volcanoes in the Lake District and glaciers in the famous Torres del Paine National Park along the way.
