In memory of the 80th anniversary of D-Day yesterday it seemed fitting to share some pictures from the past.

One of our current projects is restoration work to the Grade 2 listed building of the former Victoria barracks in Bodmin….This was the home of the Duke of Cornwall‘s Light Infantry.

The pictures (courtesy of Bodmin Keep- Cornwalls Army Museum) show a snapshot into the fantastic history of this building and it’s role during both world wars.

A little interesting fact for historic windows and why preserving the glass is such an important part of the restoration.

Before modern glass the wavy glass in your windows was “cylinder” glass like in this 1918 picture.

The glass was blown out thru machines into these cylinders and then the cylinders would be laid down on a table, scored on one side and heated again so they would slowly lay down flat into a sheet of glass that could be cut into the pieces we have in our historic windows.

For me, knowing the story behind the things that surround us every day makes those things that much more interesting.

Good weeks progress, got some more lime on the walls internally and even managed some progress on the shopfront in amongst the rain spells.

After rather a lot of measuring and cutting that’s one floor tiled. Just need to clean up and grout now. The pattern and colours were chosen to match and complement the existing floor in the main building, helping to keep the same heritage design but suit the location of the new units. They were laid using a specialist flex adhesive system specific for installation on the soundproof floor. 😎😅

After some more rather large volumes excavated by hand by the guys, finally the reinforced concrete foundations going in for the basement bin storage. Seems strange pouring concrete whilst 4 floors above the flat 3 is being painted…The joys of listed buildings and tight spaces. 😝

Tomorrow is the day…..

Some may already know but tomorrow Adam West & Dan Lilley are starting there trek to the summit of Mt Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains. The summit of 4167m above sea level is one of the mountains on the list of challenges in order to raise money for Man down - supporting men’s mental health, a charity working hard to reduce the number of male suicides in Cornwall and to break the Stigma around Men’s Mental Health.

They achieve this through informal, friendly peer support group meetings at several locations around Cornwall and all money raised will help them continue the excellent work they do.

We all know this can affect people from all areas and aspects of life… now even more common in the construction sector with the stress and pressure to “just crack on with it”..

In preparation for a restoration / renovation project off a listed building a few fluffy feathered occupants required rehoming before the soft strip could be commenced.

DOZENS of young pigeons and eggs were successfully saved from a building in Helston with severe structural damage when repair work needed to start…
