Global Traffic Passengers Increases.

Also, North American airlines experienced a 2.7 percent increase in traffic, which was an improvement from the 2 percent increase recorded in May. The strengthening dollar likely will continue to put pressure on international leisure travel to the U.S., IATA said.

Gulfstream offers enhanced connectivity for G550 and G450 aircraft

Posted 24 June 2015

Gulfstream Aerospace has announced it has received approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for installation of the next-generation Satcom Direct Router (SDR), an enhancement that simplifies cabin communications on Gulfstream G550 and G450 aircraft.
“This equipment elevates the airborne office to a new level,” said Mike West, vice president, Product Support Sales and New Business Development, Gulfstream. “The addition of a smart router allows for more communications options in the cabin, including Satcom Direct’s GlobalVT, which allows passengers to use their personal smartphones to call and text in flight. Just as they would if they were on the ground, outgoing calls show the passengers’ personal phone number and incoming calls display the number of the person calling them. This voice and text functionality is seamless, secure and available at any altitude, virtually anywhere in the world.”
The SDR offers 3G cellular connectivity worldwide with any service provider while on the ground and provides the latest technology in data compression and acceleration.
The SDR also supports mobile applications for onboard cabin services, including moving map and Flight Tracker, command and control of satellite links, and real-time connection status reporting.
The SDR interfaces with ViaSat’s Ku-band and Honeywell’s SwiftBroadband systems, and is designed to work with future connectivity systems, including Ka-band.
Installation of the SDR and accompanying software is standard on new G550 and G450 aircraft and available as a retrofit for in-service G550s and G450s. Passengers can download a mobile app on their smartphones to access Satcom Direct’s GlobalVT service, which is available exclusively from Gulfstream.
The new equipment, which weighs less than 10 pounds, is designed to be installed inside the cabin or avionics bay. Gulfstream’s company-owned service centers have exclusive rights to perform the work. They are located in Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia; Westfield, Massachusetts; Appleton, Wisconsin; Las Vegas; Long Beach, California; Dallas; West Palm Beach, Florida; Luton, England; Sorocaba, Brazil; and Beijing.
Gulfstream is pursuing similar supplemental type certificates from the FAA to add this cabin communications enhancement to G650/G650ER, GV and GIV aircraft.

Report Says Gulf Airlines $39B (with more to come) in illegal subsidies.

A report compiled for the big three U.S. airlines presents a chilling picture of efforts by some Mideast governments to establish airlines funded by massive subsidies which, according to the report, have been systematically covered up in order to mask violations of Open Skies agreements that have enabled the three Gulf airlines' disproportionate growth.

Dubai (AFP) -

Emirates Airline rejected Thursday an apology by Delta Airline CEO.

Over remarks by the US carrier's chief, in which it said he appeared to suggest a link between Gulf carriers and the September 11 attacks.

"Emirates rejects the apology issued by Delta Air Lines in response to comments made by its CEO... which intimated a link between the Gulf carriers and the 9/11 attacks," the Dubai-based carrier said.

Speaking to CNN Monday, Delta chief Richard Anderson lashed out at Gulf carriers -- Emirates, Abu Dhabi's Etihad and Qatar Airways -- when asked about claims that bankruptcy protection for US airlines should be seen as government assistance.

"It’s a great irony to have the UAE from the Arabian Peninsula talk about that, given the fact that our industry was really shocked by the terrorism of 9/11, which came from terrorists from the Arabian Peninsula," Anderson said.

Out of the 19 hijackers of the four planes used in the attacks, 17 came from the Gulf -- 15 Saudis and two Emiratis.

But Delta said Anderson "didn’t mean to suggest the Gulf carriers or their governments are linked to the 9/11 terrorists. We apologise if anyone was offended."

He "was reacting to claims the Gulf carriers have been making that US airlines received subsidies in the form of payments from the US government after the 9/11 attacks and the bankruptcy proceedings that resulted."

But the Emirates statement said "we believe that the statements made this week by Mr Anderson were deliberately crafted and delivered for specific effect.

"This brings into question his credibility as a CEO of a US public listed company, as well as the integrity of the submission which his airline has submitted to the US authorities," it said.

The US big three carriers --Delta, American and United -- are reportedly lobbying the US government to slow the expansion of Gulf carriers into the US market.

Gulf carriers have seized a sizable chunk of transcontinental travel, turning their airports into major hubs on the routes between the West, Asia and Australasia.

Qatar airlines has been rocked by reports revealing its shockingly archaic set of rules for female flight attendants.

• Female flight attendants can only be hired if single
• They must remain single for five years after starting work
• If they want to get married they have to ask the airline’s permission
• Pregnancy is a breach of contract and can lead to firing.

Although this in not a shocking development to the Arab and Islamic world it's just the moral code of conduct.

OPINION: Airbus delivers great wide hope; but what next?

A year ago, Airbus’s widebody strategy looked ragged at best. At one end of its offering, the A330 was a two-decade-old programme with a depleting backlog (its thirsty A340 sibling having already been killed off). At the other, the A380 was struggling to expand its appeal beyond Emirates. In the middle, Toulouse’s great hope was the A350. But while the -900 variant was selling well, the smaller -800 looked doomed.

As 2015 begins, things appear tidier. Despite last-minute fussing from launch customer Qatar Airways, the first A350-900 was handed over just before Christmas, a week ahead of Airbus’s year-end delivery deadline. The type has a healthy orderbook and the airframer is confident of meeting an ambitious production ramp-up. Meanwhile, the launch of the re-engined A330neo at Farnborough in July gave Airbus a credible contender in the sub-300-seat segment, where Boeing’s 787 had the market virtually to itself.
But dark clouds remain. An admission from Airbus’s chief beancounter in December that the A380 – Europe’s most ambitious airliner programme since Concorde – would scarcely be making a profit by the end of the decade, and that halting production was an option, made investors shudder.
Despite a three-year head start in terms of availability, the largest A350, the -1000, is being comfortably outsold by Boeing’s 777X, whose variants offer either more capacity or longer range.
While the next few years will be about delivery – bringing the A350-1000, A330neo and A320neo into service and ramping-up both narrowbody and widebody production – Airbus does face big decisions before the decade is out. Should it risk billions revamping a product, the A380, of which the airline industry is far from convinced? (When Boeing launched the 777X it was refreshing the most successful long-haul aircraft ever). Should it consider an all-new small widebody, or focus instead in the 2020s on a clean-sheet single-aisle design, perhaps with Rolls-Royce?
These are choices a new generation of Airbus senior managers may have to take. Now that the company is largely freed from the governmental shackles that restricted its ability to manoeuvre during the EADS era, it will be largely institutional shareholders they will have to convince of the merits of any major decisions.
One thing is sure: there can be no vainglorious grand projets. Airbus will have to make sure the business case for any new programme proposal is absolutely tight.

First UK-built SAR AW189 set for January delivery

By: DOMINIC PERRYLONDON Source: Flightglobal.com 16 hours ago

Bristow Helicopters hopes to receive the first UK-built AW189 configured for search and rescue operations later this month, following certification of the variant in late December.

The operator has already taken delivery of an Italian-assembled example, with that aircraft (G-MCGM) arriving at its Norwich facility in the east of England in November.
However, all future SAR-configured AW189s will be assembled at the manufacturer’s Yeovil, UK factory. The first of these (G-MCGN) “will be delivered to us later this month” says Bristow.

AgustaWestland
It will utilise the rotorcraft on its contract with the UK government as it progressively takes over search and rescue activities from the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.
Delays to certification of the SAR variant and slow progress in establishing the production line at Yeovil have prompted the operator to develop contingency plans including the acquisition of a pair of smaller AW139s. Inverness is the first base due to operate the AW189s and is scheduled to go live on 1 April this year.
Alongside the mission equipment to have gained European Aviation Safety Agency approval on the AW189 – which includes a dual rescue hoist, forward-looking infrared camera, searchlight and larger fuel capacity – the helicopter has also seen its maximum all-up weight rise by 300kg to 8.6t, providing increased payload.

BOEING COMPLETE FIRST FLIGHT OF NEW FREIGHTERS AND TANKERS.
By: STEPHEN TRIMBLEWASHINGTON DC Source: Flightglobal.com 21:22 28 Dec 2014

Boeing on 28 December completed a 3h, 32min flight of the 767-2C prototype that will be modified to become the first US Air Force KC-46A tanker.

The first take-off of the 767-2C – powered with Pratt & Whitney PW4062 engines – from Boeing’s widebody final assembly center in Everett, Washington, comes nearly three months behind schedule, as the contractor announced a $272 million forward loss on the programme in July due to problems installing the wiring harnesses.
It also occurs weeks ahead of a pending competition between the KC-46 and the Airbus A330 MRTT for a South Korean tender for four new tankers.
Boeing’s fixed-price, $4.4 billion development contract with the USAF leaves little room for further delays.
Within the next 32 months, Boeing is required to complete airworthiness certification of the commercial 767-2C, military certification of the KC-46A’s refuelling systems and delivery of the first 18 operational aircraft.

Boeing
Although the USAF awarded Boeing a $4.4 billion contract in 2011, the deal allows the contractor to recoup another $500 million in additional expenses. Boeing has already absorbed the overrun and reported the $272 million forward loss.
The 767-2C is a new commercial derivative that combines the fuselage of the 767-200ER, wings from the 767-300, the stabilisers of the 767-400ER. and the cockpit displays from the 787. Boeing is offering the aircraft for sale to commercial operators, but so far has received no orders.
The commercial aircraft will be converted into a military tanker and transport. Military systems include a fly-by-wire refuelling boom modeled on the McDonnell Douglas KC-10 boom design, a remote aerial refuelling operator station, wing aerial refuelling pods and military electronics.
The development contract calls for Boeing to build four developmental prototypes. The first and third aircraft to come off the assembly line will be 767-2Cs, which will be used to obtain certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration. The second and fourth aircraft in assembly will be delivered as KC-46As.
The debut flight of the first KC-46A was originally scheduled in January, but is now planned for April 2015.
The USAF plans to buy as many as 179 KC-46As to replace an ageing fleet of Boeing KC-135s, which are similar to – albeit slightly narrower than – the four-engined Boeing 707 transport.

The $65 million Gulfstream G650 is the world's top private jet.

We saw a lot of remarkable planes at the Paris Air Show last month, but one new jet really stood out: the Gulfstream G650.

At $65 million, it's the biggest, fastest, and overall best private jet money can buy.

It also takes a lot of patience to get your hands on one.

But once you're on board, you can fly around the planet faster and higher than on any commercial jet, in a cabin flooded with natural light and filled with air that is actually richer than what you breathe in cheaper planes.

With the G650, Gulfstream "established a new market segment for the whole industry," communications head Steve Cass said in an interview at the Paris Air Show. And there won't be any real competitors until 2016/2017, when Bombardier's Global 7000/8000 is scheduled to go into service.

Until then, the G650 will remain the gold standard, and it's easy to see why.

The G650 is the largest purpose-built private jet on the market, and has the tallest, longest, and widest cabin in its class.

GULFSTREAM DELIVERED FIRST NEW-BUILT G650ER

By: KATE SARSFIELDLONDON Source: 12:35 2 Jan 2015

Gulfstream delivered its first all-new ultra-long-range G650ER business jet to a private owner on 19 December.
Up to this point, Gulfstream had only completed a $2 million ER retrofit of a baseline G650.
The G650ER was launched in May 2014, securing US approval five months later. The $66.5 million aircraft is the longest-legged in production business jets, boasting a range of 7,500nm (13,900km) at Mach 0.85 – 500nm more than the standard G650, which entered service two years ago. This extra mileage allows the G650ER to connect to more city pairs than its stablemate, such as Hong Kong to New York and Los Angeles to Melbourne nonstop.
These long distances are made possible by an extra 1,810kg (4,000lb) of fuel carried in the G650ER's wings. Gulfstream has updated the type’s software for fuel-quantity measuring and flight management systems to account for the added fuel and performance gains.
The G650ER's closest rivals are Bombardier’s in-development Global 7000 and 8000, which are projected to have a range of 7,300nm and 7,900nm when they enter service in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Abu Dhabi launches outbound tourism promotional drive in Africa.

Abu Dhabi has launched its first outbound tourism promotional drive in Africa targeting leading travel operators to encourage more visitors to the emirate.
For the first time in Africa, a delegation from Etihad Airways and supported by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), held a dedicated tourism workshop in Cairo attracting 120 leading travel agent and tour operators from across the Egyptian capital. It followed hard on the heels of a 15-strong Egyptian trade familiarisation trip to the emirate when the Arab Republic top outbound producers discovered the destination’s hotels and attractions in Abu Dhabi city and Yas and Saadiyat islands.
The African insight into Abu Dhabi’s expanding attractions, hospitality and destination portfolio comes as TCA Abu Dhabi aims to open up the continent’s burgeoning outbound market and win over a greater share.
“We see significant potential from Africa overall and Egypt in particular. With Saudi Arabia currently accounting for the lion’s share of Egypt’s outbound market, with people travelling for Haj and Umrah, there is opportunity for Abu Dhabi’s emerging halal tourism stopover propositions to take hold,” said Mubarak Al Nuaimi, Director Promotions & Overseas Offices, TCA Abu Dhabi.
Etihad Airways currently operates 21 weekly flights from Cairo to Abu Dhabi International Airport, while Egypt Air operates 11 flights a week from the same city.
More than 100,000 Egyptians have already checked into Abu Dhabi’s 157 hotels and hotel apartments this year, cementing the market as one of the emirate’s top 10 hotel guest performers.
“Egyptian travel industry representatives have been left impressed by our product diversity and are interested to develop packages to Abu Dhabi, and through collaborative travel trade endeavours with Etihad Airways, we look forward to a sustained period of growth,” added Al Nuaimi.
TCA Abu Dhabi ‘s African push comes as Etihad Airways plans daily flights from Entebbe in Uganda starting this May.
