Corruption? Betrayal? Persecution? Tyranny? These subjects resonate with the current events of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. They also provide the subject matter of many seventeenth-century musical works. Kate Lindsey Mezzo Soprano has chosen to devote this second Baroque recital with the English ensemble Arcangelo directed by Jonathan Cohen to the figure of Nero. Scarlatti, Handel and Monteverdi wrote works focusing on this tragic protagonist.
Interpreted with incredible intensity, the programme features world premiere recordings of two cantatas: Alessandro Scarlatti’s 'La morte di Nerone' and Bartolomeo Monari’s 'La Poppea'. Tenor Andrew Staples and soprano Nardus Williams join Kate Lindsey for duets from 'L’incoronazione di Poppea', including the sensual ‘Pur ti miro’.

It was set by several composers including George Frideric Handel and tonight, Ian McGlynn explores a new recording from Sandrine Piau with the period-instrument Arcangelo ensemble directed by Jonathan Cohen. Plus a new album from pianist Momo Kodama of music by Toshio Hosakawa composed in homage to Mozart and recorded with Seiji Ozawa and his Mito Chamber Orchestra.

BBC Radio 3's 'Record Review' on Saturday saw the first play and first review of Phantasm - A Consort of Viols' new Bach album, 'The Well-Tempered Consort – II'. And what a review it was! Simon Heighes said:

"It's a revelation. For years you keyboard players have struggled to tease out the separate strands of Bach's complex keyboard fugues and now suddenly here they all are, laid bare by the viols. It's thrillingly clear. But it's not just about clarifying Bach's fugal textures there's also some - well what shall we call it? - some Pinocchio magic at work here, where the single lines of Bach's originals are separated out, somehow when this happens they come alive and grow and new things seem to emerge from the music."
