'What a great trip. Every need was catered for and I couldn't have asked for more. The guides were great, they were knowledgeable of the area and were able to tell us lots of information. The food was great. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone. After such great treatment I am not sure I will walk independently again. Thanks for a great trip!'

UPDATE: 14/07/17 confident 4x4 drivers can get through to Ruatahuna at own risk.

The road from Minginui through to Ruatāhuna is currently closed. Six inches of snow has fallen on this road, and it's now too dangerous to use.

Update 5:10 pm: The Special Purpose Road from Te Whaiti to the Huiarau Summit is closed due to snow on Tarapounamu, as well as between Ruatahuna and the Huiarau summit. This means there is no access in and out of Ruatahuna currently. The situation will be reassessed tomorrow. The Wairoa District Council advises that the road is also closed at Aniwaniwa, due to a significant accumulation of snow.

An update on the Waikaremoana Great Walk Track.

An update on the Waikaremoana Great Walk Track.

An assessment carried out by the Ōnukurani team has proved that the damage caused by the recent snow is extreme.

There are multiple wind falls and some major erosion to the track. A contractor is beginning work on these issues. Several structures have also been damaged which will need to be inspected by an engineer to ensure they are safe for use, moving forward.

Closure of the Great Walk will remain in place until safe passage can be assured.

The closure will be reviewed on Wednesday 24 August 2016.

Please take care if you are travelling along the rainforest route this Thursday between 3am - 7am as big trucks will be on the road between Murupara and Waikaremoana.

CLOSED to all traffic on Wednesday 24th February from 10am-2pm.
Alternative route via. Waihi>Ruapapa or Ohuka>Ruakituri Valley Roads.

Mohaka Township Bridge Refurbishment (Stage 2)
Mohaka Coach Road
CLOSED to vehicles for 3 day periods 7am-6pm starting Wednesday 24th February.
Alternative route via SH2, Mohaka Township & Mohaka Coach Roads.

After a recent incident at Waikareiti involving a family who got stranded on an Island in high winds. an investigation has insisted the hiring of the row boats on lake Waikareiti to cease! Maybe the end of a chapter :(
