Reading the voters' pamphlet, I am again struck by the number of candidates who begin by saying "I'm not a politician." I gather this displays one's purity. My response, as always, is "That's really too bad. Last time I checked, this job was all about politics." Saying you are completely ignorant of politics only demonstrates that you not only don't know the players, you don't know the game. And, in some instances, some of these candidates clearly don't know what the office they're seeking even does. But politics and government remains the only field of endeavor where an absolute lack of experience can be offered as a virtue. As I have said elsewhere, if you want a plumber, you don't go online to search for the guy who says, "I've never done this before, but I kinda like pipes." I don't know why politics should be any different.
