My name is Dom Gervasi and I'm the native Brooklynite who started Made in Brooklyn Tours® in 2011 after a career working for communications equipment manufacturers. Inspired by the makers I discover on my travels, I make it my business to seek out who's makin' it right here in Brooklyn. My tours and events feature creative people and local businesses, honor the innovators of Brooklyn's Industrial

Revolution and highlight what makes Brooklyn so great. I personally design all Made in Brooklyn Tours, organize Brooklyn by Design events and am a bonafide licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide.

While Pastosa Ravioli produces more than 30 varieties of ravioli, they also make pasta - including cavatelli infused with ricotta cheese. If you never tried it, Maria at She Loves Biscotti has several cavatelli recipes on her website including ones with broccoli, broccoli rabe, and even avocado pesto! Learn more about Italian American food from the companies that make their ingredients on the Made in Brooklyn Food Tour.

Halloween. The holiday when you might sleep with the lights on after watching a really scary movie (like I do). Or when you remember the most terrifying experience you ever had (I try not to). I say face your fears, dammit! Get shot 90mph (145km) 150' (45m) into the air on the Sling Shot in Luna Park NYC. That'll do it!

Mwahahahahahahahaha!!! Happy Halloween everybody!

The Brooklyn visual art scene characterizes many of our neighborhoods. Here visitors can appreciate many forms of street art and see works by emergent and established artists alike exhibited in galleries, lobbies, bars and restaurants - and on Made in Brooklyn Tours too. Brooklyn makers, who are as creative in their own way, often collaborate with savvy artists like Craig Anthony Miller on the design of fashion and jewelry as well as labels and packaging.

Coney Island Artificial Intelligence. Famous animatronic fortune teller or sophisticated AI robot? See Zoltar on the Coney Island Nostalgia Tour.

And, by the way, is that guy on the left the brilliant Lex Luthor? ;)

Intertwine Arts "inspires creativity, joy and self-confidence through free-form weaving for individuals of all ages with disabilities or chronic illness." At tonight's Interwoven event Made in Brooklyn Tours supported this mission by donating the newly designed Made in Brooklyn Food Tour for their silent auction. Because creative expression, whatever your circumstances, brings out the very best in us.

"This One is a Work of Art"

The main ingredient in Lioni's #47 hero is bresaola. The hero is named after Leonardo da Vinci who lived when the first account of bresaola production was written down. Learn more about Italian contributions to Brooklyn's melting pot on the Made in Brooklyn Food Tour.

As a storyteller myself, I go to New York Comic Con to learn about how comics, graphic novels, books, animations and live action films are made. The Dune Prophecy, Hazbin Hotel and Hysteria panels were a lot of fun and I never miss visiting the Artists Alley & Writers Block sections. My favorite workshop featured professional film, costume and prop makers Ian Campbell FX and Robin Careless who shared nuggets of wisdom like, "nobody's good at anything the first time" and "make a lot of stuff you don't love and just don't stop."

I hope that future Comic Cons feature even more artisans, crafters and other makers like these guys.

I'm happy to announce the Coney Island Nostalgia Tour! Over the years, I've led Coney Island tours by special request and this year I redesigned it as a shorter, exclusively sightseeing, morning tour. I'll tell the story about how Coney Island has always been a place where the world's latest and greatest innovations and inventions were brought to the masses in an accessible, amusing way. The tour is now available Tuesdays through Fridays and Sundays all year round.

I just got the call yesterday that Made in Brooklyn Tours is recognized as Cultural Tour Company of the Year in New York for Travel and Hospitality Awards' prestigious AMERICAS AWARDS 2024. It's nice to be recognized with this award and by the many Made in Brooklyn Tours' guests who have showed their appreciation for my tours by taking the time to write a review online - no small feat in a world on overdrive. Thank YOU!

Travel & Hospitality Awards is a UK-based independent global awarding body that has been catering to the travel and hospitality industry for the past eight years. Their in-house panel of judges selects winners based on criteria like:

• Reviews – Memorability is the cornerstone of any trip, so providing an unforgettable tour, activity, or adventure is valuable

• Hospitality – A high-quality service combined with a degree of flexibility is usually why clients return

• Services – Whether it be a single activity or a range of options the service must match or overperform needs and expectation

• Rating & Reviews Online – A essential factor, online feedback is important. What clients say online can break or make you.

At the International Festival last night at St Mary, Mother of Jesus Parish in , NYC's melting pot of ethnicities - Guatemalan, Polish, Filipino, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Puerto Rican and more - was celebrated with food - ok, a lot of food, music and dancing. For much of its now 135 year history, the parish "sees itself as a multicultural community in a rapidly changing urban environment." Nothing's changed but change itself.

I'm glad to have supported this event in what, I hope, were small, yet meaningful ways.

I just finished reading Wild Minds by Reid Mitenbuler https://discover.bklynlibrary.org/item?b=12373093. It's a well written chronicle of the golden age of animation in the 20th century - much of it set in New York City. Mitenbuler accounts for how a few especially creative, enterprising minds gave birth to an entire industry.

Animators and puppeteers give life to the inanimate. It's miraculous how a sketch on a sheet of paper can transform into a lovable character or a wonderful world and lead to so many advances, innovations and inventions. Their influence on society, technology and business are immeasurable. Personally, I value most their power to illustrate a story, per the epigraph in Wild Minds, that's truer than the truth.

If you're as fascinated by this subject visit the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens to see the Jim Henson Exhibition. Like many, I grew up watching Sesame Street, the Muppets and films like the Dark Crystal. I left this exhibition with a deeper appreciation of how these productions came to be.

"I feel I've always done well at using the technical aspects of the medium to expand what we can do. I find the combination of art and technology pretty exciting." -Jim The Jim Henson Company

Look at it this way. Coney Island was a seasonal world fair that brought innovations and inventions to the masses in a fun way. From deep sea exploration to aerospace. Electricity to structural steel. Incubators for tiny little babies to towers that rivaled the first skyscrapers. And, of course, candy and hot dogs too!

After taking the Made in Brooklyn Tour last week, guests Peter and Julie from the UK wanted more. We met again for an informal tour of Coney Island and headed out to Brighton Beach after. Before COVID I was almost done designing a new Coney Island tour. They helped me to pick up where I left off - thanks guys!

Yesterday, I spotted Dezy Kosmo typing poetry on demand with a Royal in Washington Square Park. He wrote me a poem about "Made in Brooklyn" for ten bucks. Whatchathink?

Royal Consumer Information Products, originally Royal Typewriter Company, was founded in 1904 in a machine shop in Brooklyn by Edward B. Hess and Lewis C. Myers. Once owned by Italian computer pioneer Olivetti for about 20 years, they're a US company today that produces office equipment and more.

Factoid: The Guiness World Record for most expensive typewriter is Ian Fleming's Royal Quiet Deluxe Portable gold-plated typewriter that he commissioned in 1952 after writing Casino Royale. Purchased in NYC.

While guests may learn something on a tour, it's a two-way street. I'm helping out with a multi-ethnic international festival in Bensonhurst and was curious about Irish cuisine. The Gibney family, hailing from Dublin, told me about colcannon. Never heard of it! So, I whipped up a batch as I made some more souvenir sea salt.
