Made in Brooklyn Tours Tours with a Made in Brooklyn theme. See who's makin' it in Brooklyn!

My name is Dom Gervasi and I'm the native Brooklynite who started Made in Brooklyn Tours® in 2011 after a career working for communications equipment manufacturers. Inspired by the makers I discover on my travels, I make it my business to seek out who's makin' it right here in Brooklyn. My tours and events feature creative people and local businesses, honor the innovators of Brooklyn's Industrial

Revolution and highlight what makes Brooklyn so great. I personally design all Made in Brooklyn Tours, organize Brooklyn by Design events and am a bonafide licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide.

Tripadvisor names Made in Brooklyn Tours a Top 10 Unique NYC Experience!

"Brooklynite Dom Gervasi, will take you around DUMBO’s bright street art and quirky independent boutiques. You’ll even get to meet the local artisans and watch their process." - David Farley, New York City-based food and travel writer

On occasion I receive special requests for private tours. Given time and flexibility, I can even customize one of my regular "Made in Brooklyn" themed tours like I did for Rachel's book club. They wanted to visit DUMBO and nosh on specialties from my own personal favorites. They were NOT disappointed!

Exporting Brooklyn

According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, "travel and tourism is the largest single services export for the United States." It's such a valued commodity that our trading partners come here to get it! . . .

Bling, bling! Gold. The color and the metal.

Brooklyn Museum's Solid Gold, exhibition, sponsored in part by Dior, glitters and shimmers. When I think gold I'm reminded of churches and disco, but it's so much more versatile. Fashion apparel and jewelry. Upcycled art. Artifacts and relics. Records that entertained the masses and may educate extraterrestrials. See gold in all its forms in Brooklyn. Exhibition ends July 6.

Watches are the most advanced mechanical devices that can still be made by hand. To me, they are essential for keeping time on my tours and when I'm swimming. My first watch was a Seiko digital watch and I still prefer them today. But I have a deeper appreciation for analog watches after reading Hands of Time by horologist Rebecca Struthers. She traces the history of portable and wearable timepieces from the prehistoric Lebombo Bone to the development of mechanical and automatic watches. She ends the book with an account of how a watch is repaired. My favorite timekeeper is the ring dial:

"engraved metal rings that could be held up to the sun and read as the light shine through a small hole in the main band and cast a bright dot on a scale inside."

Guests on Made in Brooklyn Tours get to know a little bit about me and some connect with me on social media later. If you want to learn more, check out this recent article in CanvasRebel. I'm a professional storyteller and my favorite ice-breaker question is, "What's your story?" Some of mine is in this article: https://canvasrebel.com/meet-dom-gervasi/

Aw shucks! We missed the Polar Bear Plunge! But not too late for the Coney Island Nostalgia Tour. With temps under 30°F (-1°C) - about 10 degrees colder than the water - we were as cold as possible with our clothes on. Made in Brooklyn Tours guests are explorers in search of authenticity!

Tina and Kevin from Florida were on my tour years ago, but had to peel off early. They returned for the full experience on the first tour of the year - January 2nd! It's really true that no two tours are the same even of the same neighborhood. And after such a long time almost everything had changed - except the theme.

Visiting Savarese Pastry Shoppe - a Brooklyn classic going back to 1918 and a favorite of mine since childhood - to pick up a couple of trays of biscotti. This mom-and-pop is the official pastry shop for the holidays! Taking the subway to see the lights in Dyker? Make a pit stop at 62nd Street on the D (or New Utrecht Avenue on the N) and fill up on cannoli, sfogliatella, tiramisu and more.

Especially this time of year, it may be difficult to take a moment - even just an instant - to share a smile or make polite conversation (like I did with fellow Brooklynites Vivian and Sarina). Today, at Jacques Torres Chocolate's original location in Brooklyn, many, including myself, were doing their last minute gift shopping. Sure. It was busy, but not doorbuster busy. The staff - including Mr. Chocolate himself - made the entire experience a pleasure and worth the wait.

Lioni Latticini Mozzarella produces award-winning fresh mozzarella products. Passed down through generations, from Lioni, Italy to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and beyond, their cheesemaking is a family tradition. On Made in Brooklyn Tours we explore the surprising and flavorful varieties of this wonderful cheese - the most popular in United States. And this holiday season, Lioni Latticini is the official cheesemaker!

Santy (me again!) picked up a couple of weaving circle kits for children and a chicken-shaped oven mitt for a friend (who can cook a brick) at the Made in Brooklyn Tours' official weaving studio for this holiday season! Loop of the Loom welcomes you to learn and practice the arts of weaving, dyeing, and spinning by hand. Find serenity at a hands-on meditation retreat right here in NYC - Loop the Loom has studios in DUMBO and the Upper East Side. And while you're at it, pick up a one-of-a-kind gift or two like I did.

This just in: This year's official Made in Brooklyn Tours Christmas ornament is the handblown glass cranberry red swirl twist ornament by husband and wife team Drew and Jeannine Hine of Vessel Studio Glass in Pittsburgh's South Side! (That was a mouthful.) The ornament will find its home on Brooklyn's own Christmas tree along with those from other states and territories.

Ever wonder why my shiny bald head is as bright as Rudolph's nose? That's right! It's because I use Mumu Bath products! Yes, it's true - Mumu Bath is the official Made in Brooklyn Tours maker of soaps, body butter, lip balm, and other skincare products this holiday season. Santy's Nice List is full of lots of people who will be glowing like the lights in Dyker Heights!

PS What luck! David, the maker of Mystic Mint aromatherapy products just happened to be around to take the pic!

I searched high and low visiting her pop-up shops at the Herald Square Holiday Market, inside of Macy's, and at the Bryant Park Winter Village. Following her cheerful laughter through the throngs, I finally found Natchie in the flesh! Because after a painstaking process - due to the many friggin creative people in Brooklyn - Natchie is the official Made in Brooklyn Tours artist for cards and calendars this holiday season. This time of year may be difficult for some if not many, as it has been for me sometimes. I encourage you to seek out what makes you happy. No doubt, you’ll find it wherever you may be. Somewhere in your memories, even within your own heart.

My brief stay at Covenant House New York in 1986 changed my life. Today, we alumni give back by sharing our stories at Covenant House Sleep Outs. The Team Cisco and Real Estate Executives Edition Sleep Outs that I participated in last month raise critical funds to help Covenant House International provide shelter, sanctuary, and support to youth overcoming homelessness.

My Story

My name is Dom Gervasi and I'm a native Brooklynite from Bensonhurst. I started Made in Brooklyn Tours® back in 2011 after a career in high tech working for communications equipment manufacturers. Inspired by the makers I discover on my travels abroad, I make it my business to seek out who's "makin' it" right here in Brooklyn. My tours feature local artists, artisans and crafters and honor the innovators of Brooklyn's Industrial Revolution. I personally lead all Made in Brooklyn Tours and am a bonafide licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide. I also advocate for sustainable tourism as a member of the Impact Travel Alliance.
