The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community (ashram) established at Pondicherry, in the Indian territory of Puducherry, by Sri Aurobindo on the 24 November 1926 (Siddhi Day). At the time there were few disciples staying with Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo subsequently decided to withdraw from public view for continuing His spiritual work and handed over the responsibility of the Sadhaks (spiri

tual aspirants) and the Ashram to His spiritual collaborator The Mother, earlier known as Madam Mirra Alfassa. SRI AUROBINDO ASHRAM

Founded in 1926, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram has grown, under the Mother's guidance, from a small group of two dozen disciples into a large diversified community with almost 1200 members. Counting the 400 students of the Centre of Education and the hundreds of devotees who live nearby, the larger ashram community consists of more than 2000 people. Situated in a busy city of over 700,000 people, the Ashram is not a quiet place of retreat but a vibrant centre of life in a modern urban setting. The dynamic character of the community reflects the life-affirming aim of Sri Aurobindo's Yoga. Work as an offering to the Divine is an essential aspect of the Yoga, and all Ashramites do a certain amount of productive work each day in one or another of the Ashram's departments. In the sadhana or spiritual discipline at the Ashram, there are no obligatory practices, no rituals, no compulsory meditations or systematic instructions in Yoga. Sadhaks are left free to determine the course and pace of their sadhana in accordance with their own natures. But the general principle of the sadhana is the same for all: there must be a surrender to the Divine and an opening to the Divine Force so that it may work to transform one's being. The Ashram is located in the eastern part of Pondicherry. Ashramites live and work in a large number of buildings spread throughout the area. The focus of community life is the Ashram main building, usually called simply "the Ashram", which consists of an interconnected block of houses, including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived for most of their lives. At its centre, in a tree-shaded courtyard, lies the Samadhi, a white-marble shrine where their bodies are laid to rest. The Ashram provides its members with all they need for a decent and healthy life. Various departments have been organised to look after the basic requirements of food, clothing and shelter, as well as medical care. There are also libraries for study and facilities for a variety of cultural pursuits. The Ashram is administered by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust. SABDA, Sri Aurobindo Ashram,

PRESIDENT MS. DROUPADI MURMU TO VISIT AUROVILLE On August 8 to participate in month-long birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Aurobindo *

President Ms. Droupadi Murmu is expected to visit the Matrimandir, address the plenary of a day-long conference on тАШAspiring for the Supermind at the City of ConsciousnessтАЩ, and attend a concert by Carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam.

Tamil Nadu Governor and Auroville Foundation chairman R.N. Ravi, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, member of Auroville governing board, are expected to address the gathering.

Briefing reporters, Jayanti Ravi, Secretary, Auroville Foundation, said the conference would be spread over three sessions that would focus on various dimensions of Sri AurobindoтАЩs teachings and writings. The conference would feature scholars from Auroville, Sri Aurobindo Society, Sri Aurobindo Ashram and various national and international centres who would share their experience and understanding of the concept of the supermind.

One of the sessions is devoted to understanding the essence of the Supermind as expatiated in the teachings/writings of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator The Mother, who founded the universal township 55 years ago.

The supermind, in Sri AurobindoтАЩs philosophy of integral yoga, represented the dynamic manifestation of the absolute, the intermediary between the spirit and the manifest world which enables the transformation of the common being to an enlightened soul.

Another session, тАЬAttaining the SupermindтАЭ will explore the continuum of efforts in the city of Auroville to manifest these higher concepts across all aspects of living тАФ education and research, art and culture, city planning and architecture, economy, farming, health and wellness.

тАЬAspiring for Human UnityтАЭ will be the theme of the third session that would delve into the ethos and nuances of such an aspiration and the process of enlivening it into the day-to-day routine.

The month-long events mark an extension of the year-long sesqui centennial birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo with a host of events connecting people across the country with the quintessence of his expositions as nationalist, philosopher and yogi.

The dawnfire celebration around the Matrimandir will take place on August 15, that conjoins celebration of Independence Day and Sri AurobindoтАЩs birth anniversary.

According to Ms. Jayanti Ravi, there are also plans to involve school and college students from Puducherry and Tamil Nadu in the celebrations.

The Bharat Nivas, or the India Pavilion in Auroville, would be the hub of exhibitions. About 800 Auroville units would take turns showcasing their products to the public. Yoga sessions are also part of the events, some of which will continue till mid-September.

Capping off the month-long celebrations would be the Auroville Literature Festival from August 25-27 that features top-notch authors from India and abroad attending in person or online. The premiering launch of a translation of Sarat Chandra ChattopadhyayтАЩs book тАЬDeliveranceтАЭ, revised by Sri Aurobindo and prefaced by Rabindranath Tagore, focused sessions on Aurobindo and cultural performances are among the high points of the festival of letters.

SIGNIFICANCE OF AUGUST 7 FOR INDIAN FREEDOM MOVEMENT

1. It was on August 7, 1905 when the formal proclamation of the Swadeshi movement was made with the passing of the тАШBoycottтАЩ resolution at a meeting in Calcutta. In a way, this date signifies the commemoration of IndiaтАЩs declaration of independence and reaffirming her separate national existence.

2. The first of nine articles in the series titled 'New Lamps for Old' by Sri Aurobindo were published in the journal Indu Prakash on 7 August 1893, in which he made a case for complete swarajya. That was the first time that any Indian had the courage to openly ask the British to leave India.

3. On August 7, 1906, the first issue of the nationalist journal 'Bande Mataram' was published edited by Sri Aurobindo.

On the occasion of the MotherтАЩs 145th Birth Anniversary, let us look back at what Mirra Alfassa, Sri AurobindoтАЩs spiritual collaborator, called тАШThe MotherтАЩ, shared about her earliest childhood memory, which shows when Her Yoga really began:

тАЬIn fact, if I look at the order my own yoga tookтАж. When I was five years old (I must have begun earlier, but the memory is a bit vague and imprecise) тАж but from five onwards тАж well, I began with consciousness. Of course I had no idea what it was. But my first experience was of the consciousness here (gesture above the head) which I felt like a Light and a Force; and I felt it there at the age of five. It was a very pleasant sensation. I would sit in a little armchair made especially for me, all alone in my room, and I ... had a VERY PLEASANT feeling of something very strong, very luminous, and it was here (above the head). Consciousness. And I felt, тАЬThatтАЩs what I have to live, what I have to be.тАЭ Not with all those words, naturally, butтАж (Mother makes a gesture of aspiration Upward). Then I would pull it down, for it wasтАж it was truly my raison dтАЩ├кtre.тАЭ

An animation film тАШSri Aurobindo: A New DawnтАЩ is being made, to inspire the youth of India and the world, through the story of Sri Aurobindo, as an offering by Sri Aurobindo Society for the 150th year of Sri AurobindoтАЩs birth.

The Mother has said, тАЬLong before the Christian religion made December 25th the day of ChristтАЩs birth, this day was the festival of the return of the sun, the Day of Light. It is this very ancient symbol of the rebirth of the Light that we wish to celebrate here'.
Every year, the birth of New Light, which falls on the Christmas day, is celebrated very beautifully amidst good cheer and camaraderie in Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.
In the link below, we found an interesting article on the start of Christmas celebrations in the Ashram. On the Christmas eve, we share it with you with due respect and thanks to the author and hope you enjoy it.

Sri AurobindoтАЩs Mahasamadhi Day
Sri Aurobindo left his physical body on December 5, 1950.
For a glimpse into what happened at that climactic moment, again we have to turn to the words of the Mother:
He had accumulated in his body much supramental Force, and as soon as he leftтАж You see, he was lying on his bed, I stood by his side, and in a way altogether concrete тАУ concrete with such a strong sensation as to make one think that it could be seen тАУ all this supramental Force which was in him passed from his body into mine. And I felt the friction of the passage. It was extraordinary. It was an extraordinary experience.
Our gratitude to the physical body of Sri Aurobindo was expressed by the Mother and has been inscribed on the Samadhi:

тАЬTo Thee who hast been the material envelope of our Master, to Thee our infinite gratitude. Before Thee who hast done so much for us, who hast worked, struggled, suffered, hoped, endured so much, before Thee who hast willed all, attempted all, prepared, achieved all for us, before Thee we bow down and implore that we may never forget, even for a moment, all we owe to Thee.тАЭ

NOVEMBER 24th_ SIDDHI DAY

November 24th is a very significant day for the devotees of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, as it marks the anniversary of the Siddhi DayтАФThe Day of VictoryтАФthe descent of the Sri Krishna Consciousness or the Overmental Consciousness into the physical, which took place in the year 1926. This was the first decisive step towards the Supramental Manifestation which took place later in 1956.
Of тАШKrishnaтАЩ, SupermindтАЩ, тАШOvermindтАЩ and the need of Descent of Overmental Consciousness, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother say:
тАЬKrishna is the immanent Divine, the Divine Presence in everyone and in all things. He is also, sovereignly, the aspect of Delight and Love of the Supreme; he is the smiling tenderness and the playful gaiety; he is at once the player, the play and all his playmates. тАж Thus to see Krishna means to find the inner Godhead, to play with Krishna means to be identified with the inner Godhead and to share in his consciousness.тАЭтАФSri Aurobindo

тАЬSri Aurobindo's work is a unique earth-transformation.
Above the mind there are several levels of conscious being, among which the really divine world is what Sri Aurobindo has called the Supermind, the world of the Truth. тАж It is the direct descent of the Supramental Consciousness and Power that alone can utterly re-create life in terms of the Spirit.тАЭтАФThe Mother

тАЬтАж Overmind power which is nearest to the supramental Truth-Consciousness and which is the first fountain of the creation of the Ignorance.тАЭтАФSri Aurobindo

A.B. Purani ji has mentioned in his book that nearly 25 sadhaks were there when this great event had occurred and many of them have written about their direct experiences on that day. Today we are sharing excerpts taken from the book: The Mother: The Story of her Life
The MotherтАЩs own recollections about the eventful date 24 November 1926: тАШHe [Sri Aurobindo] called everyone together for one last meeting. He sat down, had me sit next to him, and said: тАЬI called you here to tell you that, as of today, I am withdrawing for purposes of sadhana, and Mother will now take charge of everyone. You should address yourselves to her. She will represent me and she will do all the workтАЭтАж These people had always been very intimate with Sri Aurobindo, so they asked: тАЬWhy, why, why?тАЭтАж I had no intention of explaining anything and I left the room with him, but Datta began speakingтАж She said she felt Sri Aurobindo speaking through her and she explained everything: that Krishna had incarnated and that Sri Aurobindo was now going to do an intensive sadhana for the descent of the Supermind; that it meant KrishnaтАЩs adherence to the Supramental Descent upon Earth and that, as Sri Aurobindo would now be too occupied to deal with people, he had put me in charge and I would be doing all the work.тАЩ
November 24, 1926, is also the day when the Sri Aurobindo Ashram came into being. A small seed laid on that day has now become a huge Banyan tree.

SOME PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE MOTHERтАЩS LAST JOURNEY

On November 20, 1973, at 8.20 am, the MotherтАЩs physical body, which was kept in state since the early hours of 18 November, was put to rest in the Samadhi. The description of the MotherтАЩs last journey from the Meditation Hall to the Samadhi vault, which was published in the NovemberтАФDecember (1973) issue of тАШMother IndiaтАЩ, the Ashram journal, is as follows:
тАЬA casket was made of one-inch-thick rosewood and the inside was lined with a pure silver sheet and over this was a lining of felt and then white silk satin. On the lid of the casket was fixed a symbol of the Mother in pure gold.
At 8.00 a.m. on the 20th November, the MotherтАЩs body was laid in the casket, which was then covered and sealed hermetically.
The casket was carried to the Samadhi and lowered into the chamber just above the vault in which Sri AurobindoтАЩs body had been laid in 1950. Nolini and Andr├й scattered some rose petals over the casket and concrete slabs were placed to cover the chamber. There was then a meditation for about ten minutes.
A running commentary on the event was given by All India Radio. After the meditation, wreaths and bouquets of flowers were laid on the Samadhi by the Government of Pondicherry, the French Consul and othersтАжтАЭ

17 NOVEMBER MAHASAMADHI DAY

Today, is the Mother's Mahasamadhi Day. She left her body on this day in 1973. On this day, we are sharing with you some thoughts of Sri Aurobindo on the Mother. Excerpts have been taken from the book Sri Aurobindo on Himself and the Mother.

The MotherтАЩs Personal Presence Everywhere
The Mother has said she could be present everywhere, and she meant, of course, in her consciousness. It is a consciousness and not the body that is the being, the person, the body is only a support and instrument for the action of the consciousness. Mother can be personally present in her consciousness. The universal presence, of course, is always there and the universal and personal are two aspects of the same being.

The MOTHER and The ISHWARA
The Mother is the consciousness and force of the Divine тАФ or, it may be said, she is the Divine in its consciousness-force. The Ishwara as Lord of the cosmos does come out of the Mother who takes her place beside him as the cosmic Shakti тАФ the cosmic Ishwara is one aspect of the Divine.

A MESSAGE heard on NOVEMBER 17, 1974
BEFORE PASSING IN A QUEUE THROUGH THE MOTHERтАЩS ROOM
тАЬDo not look for me only in my room. I have liberated myself from my humanтАЩs body. I am now everywhere.тАЭ
