And whether it’s celebrating the family recipes passed down from one generation to the next at the street food stands we visit, or our special collaborations with Mexico’s most renowned chefs, Club Tengo Hambre highlights the very best regional food in Baja California, Mexico City, and Oaxaca. Club Tengo Hambre believes in building a better, more equitable Mexico through fair trade, ethical business practices, and compensating the CTH family with professional salaries. From food writers and chefs to architects and bakers, it’s a diverse one. But everyone who is a part of Club Tengo Hambre shares a passion for Mexico’s diverse and storied cuisine, as well as a deep pride for the cities they call home. Most of all, we want our guests to have an unforgettable time and hope that they leave Mexico with a profound respect for this country’s people and their culinary traditions.

Chances are, if you joined Club Tengo Hambre’s Insider’s Guide to Merced Market, you’ve met Don Felix.

With encyclopedia-like knowledge of Mexico’s herb diversity and a rolodex of recipes committed to memory that he’d freely share during visits to his herb stand, Don Felix was a legend in culinary circles, an icon of Mercado Merced and an all around beautiful human.

A few days ago, he passed away.

Don Felix was a charming fellow with a reed of grass always in his mouth ready to bundle the next bunch of herbs. Visits to his stall were often a highlight our trips to Mercado Merced.

Beloved by everyone at the market, his stand was a social epicenter, with his trusty pet rooster that accompanied him to work everyday always posted up on the shelf above him, unless there was a cold spell in Mexico City. His rooster, like most chilangos, didn’t like the cold.

Don Felix’s depth of knowledge about Mexico’s herbs was unrivaled. He preached the gospel that the foundation flavors of Mexican cuisine is in the country’s diverse plants. He would often wax poetically that people didn’t use herbs to cook anymore, relying instead on flavor-killing short cuts like Knorr or cubes of dehydrate bouillon. We often joked that he needed to start a cooking show.

Mercado Merced just won’t be the same without you. We’ll miss your sense of humor, your laughter, your smile, and the wealth of institutional cooking knowledge you were so generous with.

Thank you Don Felix for being such a beautiful, kind person. This world needs more people like you.

Rest in peace.
