Lakeside, Or. Chamber of Commerce The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce is working hard to expose more people to the beauty and possibilities of Lakeside and its surroundings.

06/12/2022

Today is the last day for the Chamber of Commerce. 1. 2376 folded brochures to the city-these were purchased by the city in 2018. The brochures were distributed to local businesses and surrounding area towns over the last 6 years with current inserts of local businesses and organizations and governing bodies in Lakeside
2. 16 brackets (paid from extra funds collected from LED sign) to the city. These were purchased to replace the old brackets that were deteriorating. The lamp posts need repair and when done the brackets will be more substantial than the old ones.
3. 10 Patriotic banners, 1 long banner for North 8th sign, 2 4x4 “Get Hooked on Lakeside” signs to the city
4. Equipment from Big Guy (28ft trailer) and Toy Hauler (24ft trailer) to CERT Hauser as is. Cert was extremely helpful in our last 10 Crawdad Festivals. The equipment can be used by the county and its residents in the event of an emergency.
5. Big Guy and Toy Hauler were given away thru Craig’s List.
6. $748.28 (left over from LED sign funds) to the city
7. 4 dozen medals, 1 dozen each 1st, 2nd,3rd and participant awards to the library
8. $50 check to Secretary of State for fee for Dissolution of Chamber (Cashed by State on April 11,2022)
9. 12 banners to LRP (we have sewed 5 more) for lamp posts. These were completed and painted using the Chamber paints, to replace the banners for year-round display
10. Payment for replacing with a newer version of North 8th sign for the total cost of $7986.00. This sign is the only sign of the originals still owned by the Chamber. It was in need of major maintenance. The design is still very near the current one but is made from material that should last longer than the 8 years the old sign has been up.
11. The remaining funds of $542.78 to LRP for their signage project. LRP was helpful in obtaining a grant to help with the purchase of the LED reader board the Chamber was working on with the city and with their current project of increasing signage here in town, the board felt this would be a good place to donated the rest of our funds.

Again, it has been a privilege to have worked for the betterment of Lakeside. We wish the businesses and city well.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this post. Diane O’Bryan, one of our valuable members, has passed. She knew the Chamber had for years been working on getting a LED Reader sign to notify citizens in Lakeside of meetings and events going on. She got other organizations to join us at an informational meeting and within 4 months, the sign was up.
Lakeside has lost a gem. We will miss her smile and enthusiasm for making our community better. She will be sorely missed.

Here’s the minutes from the last meeting of the Chamber Board of Directors and the list of the Disposition of all of our assets and where they went.

The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce Board of directors met on March 6, 2022 to discuss the disposition of funds of the Lakeside Chamber.
Members present were: Linda Sherych, President, Elaine Armstrong, Vice President, Sheli Roe, Secretary, Rudy Sherych, Treasurer, Michael Armstrong, Member at large.
Discussion about equipment and funds :
Offer the trailers and equipment to CERT. They have been very helpful and supportive of the Chamber for many years, running the Beer Garden at the Crawdad festival and our booth. If they don’t want it, offer the equipment at garage sale and put trailers on Craig’s List.
Use what funds we have to replace the sign on N8th Street. This is the only sign the Chamber owns. Will contact Art Signs.
Check with the State regarding retention of files. (Per State Chamber does not have to keep records for any length of time.) Recommend we keep at least 3 years of treasurer records.
Need to check with the State for procedure to dissolve Chamber. (Per Secretary of State form needs to be filled out and sent with $50.00 for Dissolution of Chamber)
What funds we have left will be given to LRP for signage as that is one of their projects they are working on. It goes with our replacing of the old sign on N 8th St and they were helpful in acquiring a grant to help with the LED reader board sign we worked on with the city.
The Board authorizes First Community Credit Union to issue the last check to LRP in whatever remaining funds there are and close the Chamber General Fund account.

5. Big Guy and Toy Hauler were given away thru Craig’s List.

It is in need of major maintenance. The design is still very near the current one but will be made from material that should last longer than the 8 years this sign has been up.
11. Remainder of funds (about $600) to LRP for their signage project. LRP was helpful in obtaining a grant to help with the purchase of the LED reader board the Chamber was working on with the city and with their current project of increasing signage here in town, the board felt this would be a good place to donated the rest of our funds. These funds will be given once the N 8th sign is done and the Chamber account is closed.
Again, it has been a privilege to have worked for the betterment of Lakeside. We wish the businesses and city well.

The Chamber membership met to discuss the future of the Chamber this past Tuesday. Due to many circumstances, death of two key members, health of a couple of others, Covid preventing events for several years, it became obvious that our membership was not going to be adequate to continue on. After discussion a motion was made, seconded to dissolve the Chamber and to go our separate way.
Per our By-Laws, the Board will pay our bills and then discuss the disposal of the Chamber assets. Once that is done, we will post that information.
It has been a great privilege of the Chamber Board to have worked with some great people here in Lakeside and surrounding areas. Thank you for all your support in the past.

Last fall the Chamber board met and discussed the future of the Crawdad festival. Mother’s Day weekend was always very iffy regarding weather. We also had loss with the crawdads because of travel and refrigeration.
We brought our ideas to the body and everyone was enthusiastic about it.
We invited and met with other organizations in town to let them know our plans and invite them to participate. They could let us know this January. We approached the city council regarding our hope for new date and got their approval.
Because of the changes and other unforeseen events, we decided to step back, regroup and do this right. So in 2023 we will be revamping to Marci Gras by the Lake on Father’s Day weekend. Members will bring back some Louisiana meat pies this spring for us to try out. We will continue to offer alligator sausage and shrimp. Our minds are working overtime as to what we can do. So for now we hope everyone is as enthusiastic about the changes and will support our decision. So for now “ Come party with me in 2023”.

Chamber members along with Dennis from the city took down the 2021 Holiday Train and Village this morning. Was hoping for the light drizzle that was forecast which did last until the end. But loading was a little harder and storing away even more so. So warming up at home after changing out of wet clothes, going to have a hot cup of tea and a blanket on for awhile. Hope all had a great Holiday Season and hears hoping for a healthy and prosperous New Year to you all.

Three more large bags were delivered to the Lion’s Hall by Chamber members last evening for their toy drive. A BIG THANK YOU to the Lodge, Water District office, the Library and Osprey Pub for allowing the Chamber to have boxes out for the last 2 months for this project. The citizens of Lakeside were very generous in their giving. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Chamber members gathered toys today from 3 of the 4 boxes in town for the Lion’s Club Toy Drive. The generosity of Lakeside is showing. Each bag is rather large. One if full, the other on its way. This is in addition to the 2 large bags already collected and given to the Lion’s Club. All boxes will be picked up on December 16. If you haven’t and still want to donate you can drop off your new unwrapped toy before December 16th at one of the following areas in town: the Lodge, Osprey Pub, the Water District and the Library. You can also pm me and we can make arrangements to pick up. Thank you to all who have donated!

The Chamber elves were very busy today putting up Holiday Train and Village. Two new cars were added this year. ( one is a little delayed in arriving but will be up soon) thank you elf Diane, Chenaya, Cheryl, Rudy, Sheli and Linda for your hard work in pounding pipe into the ground and securing the cars. Lollipops were added this year along with a tiny reindeer. Darlene from the Seniors decorated the small Norfolk pine that was planted in front of city hall. Even a few lollipops jump ship and ended up across the street at the water District office. So stop by the city hall and enjoy the holiday season!

This past Thursday several members of the Chamber refreshed some scarecrows and figured out where to put them. They were then placed in the trailer in order of placement. Thanks to Sheli and Rudy for helping me.
Today we got the scarecrows out along the main roads here in town. Helped by Rudy Sherych, Jane Mathews and Diane O’Bryan, the 12 scarecrows were set up in an hour and a half. So 2021 Streets of Scarecrows had officially started.
So now it’s your turn to get your creative juices flowing. Be creative, use what you have or buy a simple scarecrow. If you create one, take a picture and send it to [email protected] with your name and address for our contest. Pictures will be accepted until October 12th. Voting and specifications will start around October 15 thru the 31st. Winners and bragging rights will be announced shortly after the 31st.
Meanwhile here are some of the Chambers old favorites and some newer versions of old ones. See if you can see them around town.

The Chamber will be helping the Coos Bay Railroad Museum host the Speeders on Saturday, August 21, at 11-12. The normal time would have been around 2 but due to culvert work between Coos Bay and Coquille they will be making an appearance earlier.
They will be coming thru Lakeside on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning.

On July 1st we suddenly lost a valuable member of the Chamber, Mike Smith. A member of the Chamber for over 10 years, he was the Co-coordinator for the Crawdad Festival.
Raised in Molalla, he and his wife settled in Lakeside about 2008. After her death he stayed in Lakeside.
He was a former City Council member and a current Fire Board member, having been appointed to the position almost 2 years ago, and had just been elected to a 4 year term. He currently held the position of Vice President.
He was willing to do anything from wearing a Lion’s costume to driving a float for a parade. He will be greatly missed.

After a year and a half delay the beautification of the Reader sign in front of city hall is almost completed. The design was done by member Diane O’Bryan and presented to the council a couple of months ago. Once okayed, Dennis cut the sod around. Yesterday a trailer was borrowed from Chief Jeremy to pick up the blocks. They were stacked on the base of the sign. Today just before 10 the sod was removed and the base was started. Three rows were completed with some minor adjustments, then glued down. 16 bags of soil was spread inside the area. Thank you McKays for the extra 6 bags. Dennis will spread chips and we will allow things to settle some and then plant. We hope everyone enjoys the new look.
The cost was minimal so with the left over funds of $2700 will are going to purchase new lamppost brackets to replace the original ones that were deteriorating. A sample one was presented to the city council when the design was presented. These will be put up once the lampposts have been cleaned and rust areas have been treated.

Today the Chamber assisted the Coos Bay Railroad Museum with hosting the Speeder group that came thru yesterday. Members baked cookies and bagged them up. While we hosted the members outside, the volunteers of the museum were able to man their gift shop.
There were 28 cars with at least 2 passengers. They came from Washington, San Luis Abismo, to Cincinnati. It was much fun to see them and to work with the Museum volunteers.
See you all August 21.
