4 Things to Do in Lisbon for History Lovers
One of Europe's oldest cities, this historical gem reveals its rich past in every corner.
Torre de BelĂ©m, a 16th-century structure and UNESCO World Heritage Site along with JerĂłnimos Monastery, epitomizes Portuguese maritime exploration. Originally built for defense during a competitive era, it also served as a gateway for sailors entering and leaving Lisbon. The tower and monastery, both in the ornate Manueline style reflecting diverse civilizational influences, symbolize Portugalâs seafaring legacy.
JerĂłnimos Monastery, founded in 1495, was pivotal during the Age of Discovery. It provided spiritual support to seafarers, including Vasco da Gama before his 1502 voyage to India, whose tomb lies within. This architectural marvel reflects the wealth Portugal accrued through its maritime ventures.
PadrĂŁo dos Descobrimentos, or Monument to the Discoveries, erected in 1960, stands by the Tagus River. This modern monument, crafted by JosĂ© Ăngelo Cottinelli Telmo during the Estado Novo regime, features key figures from Portugalâs exploratory era, encapsulating the nation's journey from maritime glory to modern challenges.

Day Trip from Athens, Greece
If you're looking for a great day trip from Athens, explore the rich history and stunning landscapes of Nafplio, less than a 2-hour drive.
Did you know the Palamidi Fortress was completed within just three years in the 1710s? Impressive! Known for its 857 stone steps (not 999), it served as a formidable prison in the 19th century.
Moreover, Palamidi has a significant historical connection to the Greek War of Independence. In 1822, during a crucial phase of the war, Greek forces led by Staikos Staikopoulos captured this Venetian-built stronghold in a daring nighttime raid, marking it as a focal point in their struggle for freedom from the Ottoman Empire. This event not only emphasized its military importance but also its symbol of national resilience.
Today, it offers breathtaking views and serves as a poignant reminder of Greeceâs turbulent past.

Memorial Day 2024
The first large observance of what would become #MemorialDay took place at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868. In a profound act of reconciliation, this initial ceremony brought together hundreds of people who decorated the graves of over 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.
It symbolized a nationâs collective yearning for healing and unity after the Civil War. This day, originally called Decoration Day, served not only to honor the fallen but also to mend the deep wounds of a divided country. Now, over 150 years later, Americans continue this tradition of remembrance and reflection across the United States.
"Decoration Day is the most beautiful of our national holidays ... The grim cannon have turned into palm branches, and the shell and shrapnel into peach blossoms."
âThomas Bailey Aldrich
