One important Mediterranean marine center on Sardinia's northeastern coast is the Port of Olbia. It's close to one of the most opulent and exclusive travel spots on Earth—the Costa Smeralda. Olbia, being close to this area, is often referred regarded as the "Gateway to Costa Smeralda."
Among Sardinia's busiest ports, it manages over 3.5 million people yearly and serves as a critical link between the island and the Italian mainland. Designed to handle up to 6,000 daily passengers, the main passenger terminal fits roll-on/roll-off passenger ships as well as ferries and cruise ships. It has contemporary amenities fit for many kinds of boats.
With up to 25 weekly voyages ranging five to seven hours, the port links Sardinia to numerous mainland Italian ports, notably Civitavecchia (Rome). Furthermore, especially in the summer, the port hosts stops for cruise ships touring the Mediterranean.

The best Airbnbs in Sardinia
Seven pretty Airbnbs in Sardinia, Italy’s sophisticated island outpost

Slow-paced, sun-splashed and teeming with natural wonders, it’s no surprise that Sardinia is famed as the site of the first ever identified Blue Zone region. Travellers in search of la dolce vita therefore need not look much further than Sardinia’s exquisite selection of Airbnbs for a sense of the elusive secret to a long, healthy and happy life. As the second-largest Mediterranean island, narrowly missing out on the top spot to its noisier sister, Sicily, this glamorous Italian outpost flaunts almost 2000km of white sand and polished pebble coastline - and yet there’s so much more to Sardinia than just its beaches.

Acres of vineyards recount a wine history which dates back thousands of years, while the rugged mountains and hills are peppered with hiking trails and archaeological phenomena. Italian cuisine is always popular, but the intense and rustic nostalgia of Sardinia's restaurants leads even the most seasoned tastebuds into new territories. With such a dense culture to unpack on this Italian island, Airbnbs are essential to really get under the skin of the place, not to mention to meet the lovely locals. Whether you’re seeking an escape to the coast or countryside, below are seven of the best Sardinia Airbnbs to tick off your travel bucket list. For more inspiration on where to stay, see our guide to the best hotels in Sardinia and the best villas in Sardinia.

Chia Laguna Resort Sets the Scene for a Summer of Sardinian Splendour

Chia Laguna Resort, the jewel of south-west Sardinia renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes and award-winning beaches, will reopen for the 2025 season on 15th April.
Positioned along one of Sardinia’s most spectacular coastlines, Chia Laguna Resort invites travellers to unplug and reconnect with nature this summer, surrounded by verdant headlands, sparkling lagoons, turquoise Mediterranean waters, and white sand beaches. With three unique hotels, the resort is designed for families in all their forms — whether it’s parents with children, single parents, multigenerational groups, or chosen families — as well as for couples seeking quality downtime and romantic moments, and solo travellers in search of new experiences and adventures.

Where to stay

Couples and families alike will be drawn to Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia (recently recommended in the Forbes 2025 Travel Guide), a stylish retreat where wellbeing is top of the agenda - from a day spent at the Dune di Campana beach club, to a restorative morning at the Conrad Spa. At Baia di Chia Resort Sardinia – Curio Collection by Hilton, couples and adults will find the best of the local nature, with views overlooking Chia’s crystal-clear waters from the cosy rooms and suites scattered across a scenic promontory. Hotel Village is a family-friendly oasis set amidst fragrant Mediterranean gardens, with an enriching programme of activities for children of all ages at the newly refurbished Kids Club, open daily from 9am to 11pm.

The much-loved Chia Sport Week is set to make a return this year, from 25th to 27th April 2025. Under the Sardinian sun, Chia Laguna resort will open its doors to hobbyist and semi-professional athletes for three days of multi-sport events, including ChiaSwim - three swimming races of varying distances; ChiaTri - the perfect training ground for triathlete enthusiasts; and the Chia21 – three running races of 21km (Half Marathon), 10km and 5km distances.

Chia Laguna is already a prime location for active holidays, thanks to the abundance of walking, hiking and cycling routes along the coastline, padel and clay tennis courts, and a beach volleyball arena. In 2025, the resort will enhance the sporting offering for active guests through a new partnership with Campioni Soccer Academy. Campioni will provide training academies by football Premier League Legends and UEFA licensed coaches, alongside the confirmed Juventus Resort Experience and GZ19 Football Academy by Gianluca Zambrotta in addition to all of Chia Laguna’s other sport academies.

Sitting pretty between Spain, Tunisia, the French Riviera and the Italian mainland, Sardinia lies at the heart of the Mediterranean.

With its splendid white sands and translucent turquoise waters, the island is justifiably famed as a beach holiday destination – but all year long, it’s well worth heading inland to discover the island’s walking trails, urban attractions and unique cultural heritage.

Sardinia’s abundance of prehistoric archaeological sites known as nuraghi offer a captivating glimpse of the island’s mysterious prehistory. If you only have time to visit one, set your sights on Su Nuraxi di Barumini (also know as Nuraghe Su Nuraxi), about an hour north of Cagliari. The four conical towers that once dominated the landscape have been worn down by time, but it’s easy to conjure up visions of the Bronze Age village that once stood here as you clamber down stone steps and navigate narrow passageways. The site’s centerpiece is an imposing 18m-high (59ft-higth) tower fragment surrounded by a circular courtyard with walls up to 7m (23ft) thick.

Sprinkled across the placid seas of northeastern Sardinia, this stunning archipelago has been preserved since 1994 as a national park. From the tiny coastal resort of Palau, small boat operators offer island-hopping day trips to watch dolphins and explore remote beaches, while ferry boats make the 15-minute crossing to the archipelago’s two largest islands, Maddalena and Caprera.

For an easygoing Mediterranean vibe, wander the pedestrianized Via XX Settembre in La Maddalena’s historic center and pause for an aperitivo (aperitif) during the evening passeggiata (stroll). By day, head 7km (4¼ miles) east across the causeway to the Compendio Garibaldino, the sprawling former estate of Italy’s national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi. Afterward, stop in for a swim at Due Mari or Spiaggia del Relitto.

Before you go: 8 tips for travel to Sardinia, Italy

Ferries and resorts fill up during summer when crowds reach Sardinia to make the most of its dreamy coastline. But turquoise waters are just part of the allure. Ancient traditions blend with diverse landscapes on Italy’s second island, where stretches of fine sand and soaring cliffs surround a mountainous interior covered in Mediterranean scrub.

Whether you are planning a road trip, a through-hike or a tour in search of the hidden coves that dot the rugged coast, keep these things in mind as you plan your Sardinian holiday.

1. Plan for at least a week to visit
Stretching for approximately 270km (167 miles) north to south, Sardinia may appear small on the map, but covering each province could take weeks if you want to see all the island has to offer. From exploring the ruins left behind by the ancient Nuragic civilization to diving into marine reserves dotting the coast and visiting wineries in the hilly interior, you’ll feel rushed if you plan to squeeze everything in just a few days.

Take at least a full week to travel beyond the highlights and organize each leg of your itinerary in advance if you are visiting in the high season, as many of the most popular destinations are likely to be fully booked months in advance.

2. Avoid crowds and high prices by traveling during the shoulder season
Traveling to Sardinia in July and August means facing the infamous Italian peak holiday season – this is not just the hottest time of the year, but also the period during which most Italians flock to the coast for their annual holidays. Expect crowds and peak pricing on everything from ferry tickets to hotels and car rentals.

Visiting before or after the summer will make your trip to Sardinia much more enjoyable. The island is sunny for much of the year, and the swimming season can start as early as April and runs until October. By avoiding peak summer months, you’ll also have access to affordable accommodation and the chance to move around spontaneously, without too much planning.

3. Don’t underestimate the heat
The heat is not to be taken lightly. Global warming is hitting Sardinia especially hard and record temperatures have been registered year after year – in late July of 2023, the eastern coast of the island surpassed 48°C (118°F), with a high risk of forest fires affecting much of the dry interior.

July and August are the warmest months. If you are visiting during this time of the year, it’s best to avoid hiking or cycling in the middle of the day. Needless to say, always carry plenty of water.

Sarrrrrrrdinia, pronounced with 12 r’s. A beautiful island off the coast of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. The ‘Hawaii’ of the Mediterranean if you will. A place of infinite wonder and to my liking, amazing waves. Charming locals, great food, all of my favourite things. The one hard thing was the windy roads, but as you’ll see in the video, I came to like those too. A Six-Night SoJourn in Sardinia

What fun sometimes merely to fly and flop. It is just 20 minutes from a small airport like Olbia. To see out over a wide expanse and lie under the great globe of the unblemished sky that’s simply serene. To witness the mesmerically azure blue sea along miles upon miles of untrammeled coastline.

This ‘endless island’ is for tourists all about the stunning blue water the granite cliffs and its caves most numerous per square mile on earth. It’s in the very heart of the Mediterranean, the 2nd largest island after Sicily. Her population is outnumbered by sheep 3:1. It brought us the words sardine (where once they were plentiful) and sardonic (meaning Sardinia). The four moors on the flag of Sardinia (as opposed to just one on Corsica’s) represent either the four Moorish princes defeated in battle or four Sardinian victories. Indeed whilst invaded and exploited the island never was conquered.

For Sardinia is an exotic wild outpost, a frontier landscape isolated beyond its granite boulders. A bathing paradise of that unsung glory one finds amongst the quieter regions of the Mediterranean. This Costa Smeralda, this ‘emerald coast’, was introduced by Aga Khan to become the 1960s playground of the famous and fashionable. But it’s different from Biarritz, Mustique, Acapulco, or St. Tropez and, after July and August, it passes back into the hands of her inhabitants and nature lovers.
