I-4 provides a crucial link between Tampa on the west coast and Daytona Beach on the east coast. The interstate also plays a vital role serving one of the world’s most vibrant and popular travel destinations, Central Florida. I-4 consists of seventy-three (73) miles of roadway in Central Florida and accommodates an average of 1.5 million trips daily in Osceola, Orange, Seminole and Volusia countie
s. The I-4 corridor is also considered a Designated Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) Highway Corridor link of the state’s intermodal transportation network. Over the past twenty five years, FDOT has completed several studies to improve mobility in this vital corridor serving Central Florida and has made improvements to the I-4 corridor by widening portions of the roadway, adding auxiliary lanes, and improving interchanges. But with a growth in population, freight and tourism, the need to complete all the improvements as called for in the previous studies has become critical. The next step was to design six (6) corridor improvement segments from west of Kirkman Road to East of SR 434 to a level of completion that would determine the limits of required right-of-way (R/W) and allow for all environmental permits to be obtained. Now the Department is completing the needed right-of-way acquisition and is planning the construction, which is the final phase of the project.
