Dear divers: last week we caught 8 turtles in the Caracas Bay area. These turtles are provided with a radio transmitter on the carapace (shield). They also got tags on their front flippers and a temporarily number written in white on the carapace. (this will probably disappear within a week). If you see a tagged turtle, please try to make a picture from the tag on the flipper and the head of the turtle and tell us when and where you saw the turtle and at what depth. Please don’t come too close and don’t touch or scare the turtle. Thank you very much. The tropical wave that was forecast to affect the local region by Wednesday and Thursday but mainly on Wednesday has arrived as expected and is already starting to cause a few local showers. Thunder is also possible. When this tropical wave passes, we will get in an area of strong trade winds, meaning that as the day of Thursday advances and the days after, it will get windy across the ABC islands.

La onda tropical que se pronosticaba que afectaría a la región local el miércoles y jueves pero principalmente el miércoles ha llegado como se esperaba y ya comienza a provocar algunos chubascos locales. Es posible alguna tormenta. Cuando pase esta onda tropical, entraremos en una zona de fuertes vientos alisios, por lo que a medida que avance la jornada del jueves y los días posteriores, habrá bastante viento en las islas ABC.

El Niño is coming very soon!
¡El Niño llegará muy pronto!

Currently, there is an El Niño Costero near Peru and Ecuador and this foreshadows what is to come in the next several months as the warm waters spread towards the rest of the Eastern Pacific and the Central Pacific towards the Region 3.4, the area to look for the development of the El Niño. The El Niño is likely to be classified by the month of June, if current trends continue, if not by July, as the sea surface temperatures continue to rise above the El Niño threshold in the coming month and it couples with the atmosphere.
As to the strength of the coming El Niño, let's put this in perspective as Meteorologist Ben Noll shows us in the graphic. From a historical perspective this current El Niño Costero would rank as the third strongest as the strongest were the ones of 1998 (second strongest) and 1983 (the strongest). Unfortunately, both occurred on the backside of strong El Niño events. This current El Niño is still building up, so we will have to see how strong it really gets, but the fact that it is already the third strongest in that region is certainly not good news and we might be heading towards a moderate to strong El Niño event this coming year. Time will tell, but as models are showing us, droughts are very likely across vast areas of the Caribbean, mainly across the southern half of the Caribbean, including the ABC islands.

Actualmente, hay un El Niño Costero cerca de Perú y Ecuador y esto presagia lo que vendrá en los próximos meses a medida que las aguas cálidas se extiendan hacia el resto del Pacífico oriental y el Pacífico central hacia la Región 3.4, el área a observar el desarrollo de El Niño. Este El Niño actual todavía se está formando, por lo que tendremos que ver qué tan fuerte realmente se vuelve, pero el hecho de que ya sea el tercero más fuerte en esa región ciertamente no es una buena noticia y podríamos estar dirigiéndonos hacia un evento de El Niño de moderado a fuerte este próximo año. El tiempo lo dirá, pero como nos muestran los modelos, es muy probable que haya sequías en vastas áreas del Caribe, principalmente en la mitad sur del Caribe, incluidas las islas ABC.
