Dear Friends,
I invite you to join me on a trek to Makalu Base Camp in East Nepal, 24th October -17th November 2017. The route is a challenging high altitude walk, through the Arun and Barun Valleys, offering some as the most dramatic high mountain scenery on earth, the 'Yosemite of the Himalaya'. This is a fully supported camping trip, supported by our team of local guides, cooks and porters, such that we are able to walk with day packs and enjoy the journey to it's fullest. We trek to Makalu Base Camp, the 5th highest mountain in the world, and alongside K2 possibly the most dramatic of the 8000m peaks, offering views of Everest, Lhotse and countless other Himalayan giants. Our trek is coordinated to coincide with the full moon as we reach the base camp at 5500m. We return via a different, seldom used route to maximize our experience of this majestic mountain region.
The Makalu trek is probably the quietest of the classic mountain journeys in Nepal. There are few settlements, this is a real wild mountain trek with abundant bird life, wild flowers and wildlife in the Makalu - Barun Conservation area. The cost of the trip, 22 days fully supported trekking and all inclusive of internal flights, permits, meals and 4 nights in the beautiful 4 Star Hotel Shankar in Kathmandu is C$4950. Plus your return flight to Kathmandu, insurance and local staff tips. (Vancouver to Kathmandu around $1500 with Cathay Pacific as I write).
Just yesterday my two sons, aged 5 and 7 set off on the school bus to start their own adventure together at our local elementary school. The connection here is of course that I have not undertaken a 'serious' trek for over two years, the longest break I've had since 1989. Although madly in love with my family I have missed the mountains enormously and am committed to making the most of this trip for myself and all involved, and sincerely hope you will join me. I have never trekked to Makalu before and have chosen this route as the most inspiring and fresh return to the Himalaya I could imagine.
It is short notice I know, but also more than enough time to prepare should you be inspired to do so. I will give you my personal advice and support, equipment lists etc. to help with this process. Whatever works out we will be a small group travelling in great style. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Mick
