Named after the Admiral Pieter Both, who died in the sea of Flic en Flac in 1615, the Pieter Both mountain is around 820m height. First ascended by Claude Peuthé in the 1790s, this peak has always been a dream by many hikers and mountain enthusiasts to be on the top. Antoinette sugar mill ruin and chimney. Also known as Belle Alliance, it was at this sugar estate, the first official batch of Indian indentured laborers worked for. The sugar mill was established at the beginning of 1830s and ceased to operate in the late 1930s. The bell of the sugar mill is actually at Petite Julie temple. La Nicolière Reservoir. The reservoir was constructed in 1929. Before the reservoir, there was a sugar mill, apparently existed since the 1830s. Later, the sugar mill was demolished in a fire, and the estate was annexed by California, an another sugar mill nearby. The famous stone bridge was built by Paul Le Juge de Segrais, an engineer born at Mon Gout in 1868.

The chimney of Île D'Ambres sugar mill. Not to be confused with the Île D'ambre islet. There is also a small village named Île D'Ambres, which is situated between the village of Panchavati and Poudre D'or. The Île D'Ambres estate existed since the end of 1790s, and was owned by Jean François Rouillard. The estate transformed into a sugar estate when the sugar mill established in the 1830s. The sugar mill operated until 1921, and then annexed by Saint Antoine. The Château de Benares. Do not forget, the actual ruin which is still present there is the kitchen of the Château, and NOT the Château itself, which is often wrongly acclaimed. When Virgil Naz established at Benares, the sugar mill of Benares was just a couple meters away from the house. He ordered to displace the sugar mill at least 2km away, where it is presently. The sugar estate was established in the 1850s, and the sugar mill closed in 1960. The Château has been demolished in the 1930s. Rempart mountain is around 600m in height. Situated next to Rempart river (west), according to some beliefs, it was supposed this mountain that the Admiral Pieter Both saw first, when he came to Mauritius. In fact, his ship sank in the sea of Flic-en-Flac, and not at Tombeau Bay according to the popular rumor. This has been debunked when the shipwreck has been found in the 1970s. Some believe it should be Rempart mountain to be named as Pieter Both. The mystery continues... My blog: letsdiscovermauritius.com.

Alma sugar mill's chimney. The first name of the sugar mill was Champ D'or, and the name changed to Alma in 1854. Henry Leclezio established in Alma in 1872, after closing their sugar mill situated at Mapou at the beginning of Goodlands village. They took over Alma, and in 1917, Henry Leclezio bought the shares of his brother, and Alma annexed Bar le Duc, Bonne Veine and other sugar mills in the nearby regions. In 1947, Alma ceased its operation, after being annexed by Mon Désert. This windmill is located in Caudan and was built in 1736 as a flour mill. Its primary function was to supply flour to the dockers at the harbor. That was the reign of Mahé de Labourdonnais. Since 1999, the windmill has been a museum and can be visited. The Tour de L'ordre was next to it. See the pic on my previous post.
