Named after the French naturalist and explorer, the François Péron National Park is found north of Denham. It is 4WD access only and you must reduce the pressure in your tyres before heading in as the 'roadway' is mostly soft sand. There is plenty to see in the park including an old sheep station with it's own artesian hot tub and some lagoons. Lovely area!

Monkey Mia!!! Famous for feeding the dolphins! Once upon a time, they were fed at any time all day, but this has changed - and for the benefit of the dolphins. Feeds are only 3 times each morning and only 5 dolphins get a 'feed'. This ensures that the dolphins are reliant on their natural feeding habits rather than the human feedings. Interesting place and you can learn a lot about dolphins here.

North of Shell Beach is the little seaside town of Denham. We stayed at the Denham Seaside Tourist Village which is quite close to the beach and the native birds wonder through at their leisure.

Travel another 58km north west from the stromatolites and you will find Shell Beach. As it's name suggests, this beach is entirely made of shells! Tiny cockle shells no bigger than 1cm wide. And it's huge ... 110km long!
There was a couple there doing their own photography shoot ... nice! Then, as we were walking away, we heard a squeal! The girl in the water spotted the sea snake in the water and was out of the water real fast!

Heading south from Carnarvon, we came across the stromatolites of Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay. These are rock-like structures in the sea water that are thousands of years old. You can walk along the platform that is above the water and read the information plaques to learn about the stromatolites.

Travelling further south, we stopped at the fabulous Wintersun Caravan Park in Carnarvon. The sites are fabulous, the amenities perfect and the hosts Dean and Melissa very friendly. Dean helps everyone get your van on site with ease. Definitely recommend staying here when staying in Carnarvon.
We went for a drive around Carnarvon and found the one mile Jetty, sand swept roads and the marina.

We visited some friends who were camped out at Warroora Station 14 Mile Beach Camp. It's a 20 minute drive south of Coral Bay and right on the beach. There's no water or power hook up but when you look at the scenery, you tend to forget about all that! It's $10 a night to camp here. =D

Beautiful Coral Bay is only 153km south of Exmouth. We stayed at the Bayview Caravan Park with it's grassy sites and great amenities. The Bay itself is an easy stroll from the park and the water is soooooo clear you can see the spangled emperor fish swimming about your legs!

While in Exmouth, we went for a drive to see the Cape Range National Park ($12 entry per car at Ranger Station). An awesome place to see with plenty of sights to see. There are designated free camp spots in the area but you must be self contained. Fishing is not allowed as the Ningaloo Coast is protected. Snorkling at Turquiose Bay was a special experience. The water is soooooo clear! The Turtle Centre was interesting and there is a display on the life cycle of a turtle. We found turtle tracks heading back to the water at one beach. At the tip of the cape, you will see the shipwreck of the SS Mildura that came to grief after a cyclone hit.

We travelled 206km northwest to Exmouth. We stayed 8 days in two parks - both parks were offering pay for 3 nights, stay 4. So we did that twice! We were told that the fishing was good under the footbridge at the marina. (And, of course, a lovely sunset!)

From Port Hedland, we travelled 263km southwest to the town of Dampier. At the information bay, you will find the monument dedicated to 'Red Dog' ... a red kelpie dog well known in the Pilbara region for his travels between the towns.
(It was here that Jacqui was able to catch up with a school friend, Sandra Ellson, after 34 years! We took up their generous offer of parking our van in their backyard while we explored the area for which we are very grateful! :) )

Port Hedland is a further 85km south of the De Grey Rest Area. This town is mainly a port and mining town where the majority of those that live there are employed by surrounding mining companies. The major services are located in South Hedland.
We celebrated Australia Day with family and friends at their housing estate with a community bbq area.

80 Mile Beach is about 300km south of Broome. Great park with good facilities and an awesome beach. Found a little turtle beginning its looooooong journey back to the ocean. Hope he/she made it ... it was low tide at the time and it was a very long way to the ocean!

There was one day in Broome where we had to prepare for Cyclone Nathan ... the town was on Blue Alert, which means prepare for dangerous weather. We were informed that Nathan was going to hit Broome as a Category One cyclone ... not very strong, but the strongest we were to endure. So before the 'storm' we went out and took some shots of the approaching menacing clouds. All that excitement for very little, Cyclone Nathan fizzled out to a tropical low before it hit the coast of WA and all we saw was about 3mm of rain! But the clouds were awesome! =D

Eco Beach Resort is a beautiful resort where it has been created with minimal impact of the area giving a natural wilderness setting. Eco friendly huts and accommodation and a bar and restaurant. Then you have the beach with hammocks hung along the beach. An ideal spot to relax and take it all in.

About 25km north of Broome is the Willie Creek Pearl Farm. They do a tour on the boat of the area and tell you all about the farming of pearls. They don't farm their pearls in this bay, they do it further up the coast. But they have samples there to show you how it's all done. Interesting day!

When in Broome, a camel ride on Cable Beach is a must! It's extra special when there is a beautiful sunset to go with the camel ride! The staff that walk with the camels tell you about each individual camel and their story and offer to take a photo of you on the camel. A great experience!
