Just by the head size, some “character” and just sheer proportions 🦈, you can tell this behemoth is an older specimen in his prime! You better get your casting and battle arms ready, you’re gonna get worn out catching thyrorus peacocks all day long over here! 8-10lb averages, some reaching 12-14lbs or more. Doubles, triples, as many as you can work rods!😂 It’s peacock mayhem!

••MONKEY FISH••

Aruanã, Arowana and “peixe macaco” or monkey fish. All common names for, in my opinion, the most exotic of all the Amazon game fish.

Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Silver Aruanã, is the perfect game fish. They are formidable surface oriented predators, they will weave into any structure or depth they can swim through and capitalize on both aquatic, arboreal and terrestrial prey. “Bony-tongued” as their genus describes, they have a bony patch on the roof of their mouth and use their bony tongue to crush prey before swallowing. They grow to large sizes up to a meter or more in length and have giant bucket mouths with which they voraciously attack and inhale small prey, including a well presented fly!

Sight fishing for Aruanã has got to be one of the most mesmerizing fishing experiences. The electric vibrant colors and its unique graceful movement make this fish stand out above all others. Once honed in on your fly, a hungry fish will demolish it and put on a show with several jumps and some serious runs. Here is a nice specimen caught by my buddy Derek! Congrats man!What a fish!🏆😎💪🏼

••PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF EH!••

One of my client/good friend’s son finally came down to fish with us. Needless to say, I was eager to meet him. It really was was a pleasure to spend time and fish with two of my favorite Canadians! The young man may have taken home more than just beautiful memories and cool fish photos.

Most trophy fisheries teach us an important lesson in persistence and determination. There are days of small to medium sized fish to get you fine tuned and warmed up. Sometimes you will go days without stirring up or landing that special fish, but eventually, with the right input… the output is very rewarding!

Such a good time and I will never forget putting my buddies’ son on his first trophy pinima! Pictured is his second trophy of the day, caught only minutes after the first one (will share photos later). Well done Brayden! 😎💪🏼🏆👏🏼

••THE PINIMA WAY••

A couple times a day you will have a shot at a big fish, but there is a learning curve in order to do everything right and land a trophy. A lot can go wrong fishing in a jungle environment full of structure and other challenges. Not everyone is prepared to do it the first time around. When you do capitalize on the opportunity though, as my good friend Will has, you get an impressive prize!

For this to happen you must make somewhat precise and long casts into the edge of structure. If trophy sized fish is what you are after, it is crucial that you can use a delicate presentation at a moments notice, scenario that is common sight fishing in the flats, shorelines or beaches of the river. More important though, is to begin stripping as soon as your fly lands, doing the sporadically paused, erratic stripping that incites BIG fish to bite… if you manage to get used to all these techniques, you will have what it takes to land a beautiful pinima! In this case a beautiful “açu” color morph pinima with a dark golden color was the trophy of the day! Bright yellow, shiny gold or dark gold, I can appreciate the beauty in all these uniquely patterned peacock bass. Truly one of many of God’s masterpieces we encounter in this wilderness jungle paradise!

Also, note how the fish is handled. The fingers are gripping the opercular bone in a fleshy part of the opercular area. No gills are touched or damaged, so with proper support beneath, the fish is unharmed and the angler doesnt risk injury to the fish or to themselves by lipping the fish (sharp tiny teeth). All fish are properly allowed to regain strength undisturbed by other fish or 🐬river dolphins, and are released safely into structure. 😎🙏🏼🏆🐟🦈🐠

Cichla pinima, the pinima peacock bass, is the athlete of the peacock bass world. This species lives in fast flowing rivers, dwelling in all kinds of structure, including in the rapids!

As my friend Brad found out, a “pinimão” can surprise you in the most unsuspecting place! He found this one hiding a couple meters deep in some rocky structure in the middle of a run. They are not your regular-old peacock, as they not only have the characteristic strength of the Cichla species, but also has the added strength of hunting in rapids which makes them formidable fighters!

Meet our new obsession… the Cichla pinima! The pinima peacock bass are the second largest species in its genera, growing well into 20lbs+ and each its own absolute work of art! 😍

Pinima peacocks are not only a beautiful fish, with their golden body scattered with black spotting and electric blue dorsals…but they also are the toughest and strongest of them all. In our fishery, pinima dwell in both still water AND in fast flowing sections of the river! You can encounter fish holding in fast water much like a trout or a dorado would.🤯 It isn’t uncommon to get a violent take from these brutes in the middle of white water in the rapids! Needless to say, these fish put up a nerve-racking fight!💪🏼😎

People from all over the world come down to Bolivia for the jungle adventure and to pursue the ONE, their dream fish, a 10kg+ golden dorado.

Contrary to what social media may make you think, dorado do not come easy. Dorado require the angler to be stealthy, have quick reactions, distance and precision casting, and sometimes a delicate presentation with heavy lines/flies. Not to mention you got to keep all these skills on point whilst enduring the jungle elements and obstacles. Some clients come well prepared for the challenges, others not so much. Regardless of this however, their overall energy and disposition are what largely contributes to their success. 🙏🏼💪🏼

I always love being a part of these jungle dreams coming true in their various unique ways. Few things are more fulfilling as a guide than to put a great guy on a great fish! ••RAINY DAY SURPRISE••

Anything in the jungle can change in a split second. Of course, rain is something that happens in the rain forest, so we do learn to deal with it and plan our days accordingly.

In this case we had left Muture outcamp to hike up farther out than normal, making the effort to go on one of our most intense jungle hikes. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining as we made it out of the trail onto the river. Peeking through the jungle and seeing the water glimmering in the light, looking like melted emeralds bleeding out of the mountain, sure makes any anglers’ heart pound even harder.

We began our hunt for fish, landing a few tabarana and small to medium dorado in just the first couple runs. Then the clouds moved over us and covered the sky, draping the jungle in that dull light that makes it look even more mysterious and spooky. Taking advantage of the cover of rain, we walked through the boulder fields in the middle of the river, allowing us to scan both banks for fish. In this fashion, we were able to sneak up on this good sized yatorana that was hanging out under some suspended vegetation by the river bank. Approaching this yatorana in any other situation would of spooked it, but we were using what the jungle had dealt to us that day. A perfect cast put the fly where it needed to be and this yatorana was all over it in a split second. My buddy made a great hookset and landed this beauty in the middle of the river in the rain, making it his PB yatorana for the trip. What a fight it was in shallow water! Great example of “when life gives you lemons”, you make the best of it! 😜😎🍋🎣

••BLOOP-BLOOP & A PACU••

Also known as the permit of the jungle, the pacu (Piaractus brachypomus) is just as challenging to entice and land. Its body shape allows it to really use the current to its advantage and coupled with that powerful tail, the pacu can easily take you to your backing!

Pacu are omnivorous and feed mostly on fruits and seeds, but will switch to invertebrates and other fish and amphibians when the fruiting season has passed. The seed flies used to catch them are imitations of the pachiuva palm nut, which sinks quickly and is taken on its way down or while drifting along right off the bottom. A sudden violent take and one hard strip set later, you are on for an exciting fight!

••THE POOL BOSS••

Last week was a great time, had some great people in camp, a special adventure and some big fish caught…and then there was this behemoth!😱🤯

Antonio, one of our tsimane friends threw in a sabalo head right by the rock wall of a huge pool in Pachene. Minutes later his line went tight in a way that would excite any fisherman. We saw the fight and picked up and took off to where he was in order to enjoy a closer view of the battle… What an impressive example of the size of fish that can be found in such a small river… just AMAZING!

Anyone care to “rest” that casting arm and throw a bait in for one of those? Better train those arms! 😅💪🏼🤣

This fish weighed easily 70kg, and was full of old scars… it was a serious animal to hold! The true BOSS of the pool. An ancient fish that could probably tell many stories of what its seen in these remote jungle waters! A man can dream! 🤩😂

••WAIT FOR IT•• •• •• After a day fishing the uppermost beat of river Pachene, coming down from the corner pool jungle trail you drop right into the top part of the “big run” and have to cross it to get back to Muture outcamp. Right before stepping into plain view, I always like to sneak up first for a quick peek. Most of the times I run into a nice surprise, but this time it was extra special… Watching dorado do their thing is always an exhilirating event to witness. It never gets old!
