Fish Friday!
On February 4, 2020, Vickie Hammonds of Wilmington caught a world record Gulf Kingfish at Kure Beach. The 3lb 13oz fish beat out the previous record of a 3lb 1oz fish caught at Hatteras Island. Hammonds caught the 21-inch fish using fresh shrimp as bait.
Gulf Kingfish are found from Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil. They are the largest of 3 species of kingfish. The Southern Kingfish is more commonly caught in North Carolina; the Northern Kingfish is the least common.

On January 30, 1972, James Hussey caught this massive 14.40-kilogram (31-pound, 12-ounce) bluefish off Hatteras, North Carolina. Hussey’s fish still holds both the IGFA All-Tackle World Record and Men’s 24-kg (50 lb) Line Class World Record for the species.
