Explore the Astana

Astana is the Malay word for Palace and this iconic building dates from 1870 during the time of Charles Brooke who was also known as the Second White Rajah of Sarawak.

The Astana is now the official home of the Governor of Sarawak but it was originally built as a wedding gift for Ranee Margaret, the wife of Charles Brooke.

The complex is made up of three different bungalow areas which are joined by walkways and the Astana enjoys panoramic views over the waterfront of Kuching.

As this is an official state residence, however, visitors are not permitted to enter the Astana grounds and you will have to make do with admiring this historical gem from afar.

Stroll along the Kuching Waterfront

The most iconic part of Kuching, without a doubt, is its scenic waterfront which is where all the main action happens.

This part of town would have been used by warehouses in the days of old, but now you will find a pretty walking path that flanks the water and offers you amazing views over the main sights in towns such as the Astana and the majestic Fort Margherita.

At night this is the place to see and be seen, and many young couples from Kuching choose this spot for a leisurely romantic stroll.

Go white water rafting

Some people may be surprised to hear that white water rafting is a popular pastime around Kota Kinabalu and there are a number of places to get out on the water if you want to get your adrenalin pumping.

One of these is the picturesque Kiulu River in Tamparuli which is about an hour away from the city centre, or you can choose the mighty Padas River outside Tenom which is a two-hour drive away.

The reason to come to Padas River and not the Kiulu River is for the Grade 3 and 4 rapids found here which guarantee a wilder ride if you don’t mind the slightly longer journey time.

Get lost on the world’s largest floating village

Stand on the waterfront and admire the sprawling stilted buildings across the river. Ferries and speedboats zoom between the mainland and Kampong Ayer. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, the water village houses approximately 13,000 permanent residents. But the wow factor extends further: the settlement consists of around 40 separate villages with schools, mosques and restaurants. Take the ferry from the waterfront and stroll along the maze of deserted boardwalks and neighbourhoods.

Visit Sandakan Memorial Park

Sandakan Memorial Park is one of the most important historical sites in Sabah and lies in an area of forest land that is separated into different lush gardens.

This site used to be a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War and was also used as the place where prisoners would begin the horrific ‘death marches’ which would take them to Ranau.

To put the tragedy of this area in perspective, 1800 Australians and 600 British troops were imprisoned in the camp and only six Australians survived after they managed to escape.

The park is a haunting yet moving memorial to all those who lost their lives here and you can see photographs of those imprisoned as well as some of the machinery that they would have operated in the camp.

Malaysia’s granite beast

Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu (Gunung Kinabalu in Bahasa) is Borneo’s and Malaysia’s tallest peak.
Soaring to 4,095 meters (13,435 feet), it’s the highest point between the Himalayas and Papua New Guinea.

Travellers to Sabah immediately notice Kinabalu featuring on the state flag. It holds both deep ties to local Kazadan-Dusun indigenous people and ancient paganism.
Climbing Mount Kinabalu is a two-day affair. Day one involves hiking 3,272 meters (10,735 feet) to a hostel in Laban Rata. The second day starts at 2:00am to reach the summit in time for the sunrise.

Keep your eyes open for the changing landscapes, flowers and wildlife. Bring warm clothes for the higher altitudes.
Mount Kinabalu only permits a limited number of climbers each day. Places sell out months in advance. Climbing Kinabalu in Sabah needs preparation to guarantee a spot.

Turtle Island Sandakan
Selingan Turtle Island is a conservation area off the coast of Sandakan that is dedicated to taking care of turtles and releasing them back into the wild.

There is a turtle hatchery here where you can check out the baby turtles as they hatch and are released into the ocean and there are some basic sleeping quarters here if you want to stay a little longer on the island.

If you want to see the turtles as they make their way into the sea to begin their journey into adulthood then try to visit from March to July, or you can also visit from July to October as this is when the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand.

Sarawak Cultural Village
Just a 35-minute drive outside of Kuching will take you to the Sarawak Cultural Village where you can learn all about the different indigenous groups that live in this part of Malaysia, as well as take in a range of local crafts and buildings.

There are live demonstrations which will teach you ancient techniques such as weaving, bamboo carving, and bead making and you can also tour this model village and check out all the architecture.

Just some of the sights on offer include a traditional Chinese farmhouse as well as a Penan hut, Iban longhouses, and a Melanau Tall House and the site sprawls over 17 acres so there is a huge amount to see and do here if you fancy an easy day trip out of the centre of Kuching.

Search for local craft at the Handicraft Center

Local artisans sell their handicraft at the Miri Handicraft Center.
The small centre along Jalan Brooke has dozens of stalls where vendors showcase their handmade products.

Some sell traditional weaved objects, which includes mats made by the indigenous Penan peoples. Others have textiles, handbags and traditional clothes.
Stroll through the passageways and meet Sarawak’s indigenous communities who fall under the umbrella term ‘Dayak’.

Marvel at the colours, craftsmanship and detail. Wave to the smiling elderly women sat next to their stalls.
Miri Handicraft Center is the most recommended place in Miri to buy souvenirs.
The centre opens daily between 9:00am and 6:00pm. Cultural shows sometimes take place in the evening.
