A REMINDER to all in the Portland Metro area:

My son and the Franklin High School baseball team have their annual fundraiser of selling oranges and grapefruits…happening right NOW 🍊

They are selling delicious and nutritious California Navel Oranges and California Rio Red Grapefruits thru the Orange Guy fundraiser program.

20lb 1/2 bushel boxes (approx 46 oranges or 26 grapefruits) at $40/box
OR a 10lb half box at $20/box!

You can order a box of all oranges, a box of all grapefruits or a box of half & half.

Orders & Money Collection is DUE by:
Monday, February 24th

Citrus is ready for Delivery: March 6th or 7th

Cost: $40 full box or $20 half box

Payments Accepted:

• Check (made payable to Franklin High school baseball)

PNW weather can be wild, but this is just ridiculous! 🤯

My outdoor weather station sensor must be busted, because it’s reporting temps like 158°F and -40°F in the same day! 😂
Unless I somehow got teleported to Mars... 🚀👽

Bummed that I need to now replace this if I want to know the actual temp and wind conditions in my own backyard!🏡

Pruning for a purpose 🍑🌳!

Winter maintenance is a must when you have fruit trees on your property.

I learned the proper technique a few years ago and it’s made all the difference. My son and I spent the day trimming our peach tree last winter and had an amazing bounty last summer.

This year I have to prune solo, and I’m hoping for an another outstanding bounty yet again this summer!

Anyone else out there tending to their fruit trees?

Recycling day success! 🌎💚

We’re thrilled to see the largest pile of recycling yet to go out here at the Rhone Street station! 📈

Four bags outside our bin, four bags inside our bin, and we helped to fill four more bags at two other neighbors’ bins - and this doesn’t even include the number 2’s, 4’s, 5’s & 6’s we will be recycling later this week!

That’s a whole lot of recycling! 🎉

Keep up the fantastic work, neighborhood recyclers! Wahoo!! 🙌

Exciting updates at the Rhone Street Recycle Station! 🌎💚

I’ve added two new collection bins on my porch: one for book donations (any readable condition book is welcome!) 📚 and another for used tennis balls 🎾.

Your tennis ball donations will support our Doggie Stick and Ball Library here at Rhone Street Retreat 🐾, while all book donations will stock not just our own Little Free Library but also the five or so others in the neighborhood that we restock almost weekly weekly📖.

Stop by and Drop off your donations anytime!

It’s only a week late, because I stayed up too late finishing it and then clearly fell asleep on the sending part 🤦🏼‍♀️ oy vey!

But nonetheless, the newsletter is out now and has a lot of info in it this week including another new record for landfill diversion, what is Wishcycling and how it negatively impacts recycling including right here at the Rhone Street Recycle Station, info on the new Right to Repair Act (SB 542) here in Oregon, specialized items we are collecting for repurpose and reuse, sustainable living resources and even info about my recent tour of the Metro Central Transfer Station.

Did you know where to put your fresh food and frozen food bags? 🤔 It’s a tricky one! 🤷‍♀️

👉 Plastic film is typically stretchy (think thumb-through-able) 👍
👉 Multi-layer plastic is noisy and crinkly 🗣️

BUT, surprise!
Frozen food bags and fresh food bags go in the Multi-Layer Plastic bin! 📦 (Check the collection signage for confirmation!) 📝

Stumped? Don’t worry, it’s tricky! 😊

Recycling in Portland can be complicated, but I want to help! 🌎💚

Did you know that you can recycle many different forms of metal in your blue bin?
Including metal food & beverage cans (aluminum, tin & steel), paint & aerosol cans (empty & dry), foil (clean & dry, balled up to size of baseball), scrap metal (smaller than 30 inches and less than 30 pounds), and small metal pieces (under 2 inches).
Just make sure everything is 100% metal and meets the size and weight requirements. 📏

One common hiccup is those loose metal lids, like those from canned foods and beer bottle caps. These CAN be recycled…but they first need to be placed inside a metal can, then crimping the top shut before going into the blue bin. 📦

Stay up-to-date on Portland’s recycling rules by visiting (Portland.gov/recycle). 📊

Make your New Year’s resolutions stick! 📝💫

Studies show that writing down your goals increases commitment and success. Every year, I make it a tradition to write down a few short-term and long-term goals, as well as new things I would like to do or try and places I would like to visit. Then I reflect on the previous year’s progress. 🎉
This year, I’m proud to say I achieved 10 out of 15 goals! 🙌

For the last few years, several of my New Year’s Goals had to do with trying to live more sustainably, and this year will be no different. 🌎💚

While reducing my environmental footprint is important to me, I also have goals focused on personal growth, relationships, and community. 🌈

Overall, writing down New Year’s Resolutions can be a powerful tool for achieving goals and making positive changes in one’s life. 📝💪

So, what goals will you make this year to:
✨ Better your health and life?
✨ Better your relationships with friends and family?
✨ Better your community?
✨ Better the world? 🌎

The antics of coop life can be so intriguing and funny… In the summer we always get 1-3 gals who want to sleep out on top of their hen house. Of course we come and put them away before we go to bed as they are more secure in their hen house and while it may be warm in there, it isn’t hot (we have a thermostat 😉). It’s usually the same gals each night until one night it isn’t and then suddenly, it’s a different girl. 💨 For the last several weeks it has been Cardamom up top. Occasionally she would be joined by Clove or Cinnamon or Nutmeg…or some combination of 2-3 of these gals. But in the last 2 weeks it changed from Cardamom every night to just Clove for 2-3 nights and now it is Cinnamon. And I swear, when we come in to put them away, it’s like they suddenly realize they have been spotted and we hear this cooing, like they’re whining “awe crap, here they come. One of my favorite evening activities this summer…picking blueberries at dusk We have 10 bushes. Several are new this year and not bearing much fruit. A few are late season bloomers so the berries aren’t yet ripe On about 3 of the bushes, there are few berries every couple of days ripe for the picking. But on this one bush that is now 3yrs old, it is just blowing up with blueberries. There are so many, the kiddos I nanny get fresh picked berries every day for lunch, there are some to freeze for smoothies and homemade popsicles, and even to eat a few while picking, cause I just can’t resist! So two+ weeks ago I a post from @higherselfpdx on their insta page about some cute hair clips. And yes they were all cute but I commented that I wish they had a chicken one…go figure the chicken lady wants a chicken hair clip, who would think it Anyways, they messaged me back that they do! So we popped in and here it is, a Rubber Chicken hairclip…and it’s wearing go a diamond-looking necklace ta-boot! So freaking cute! I wear it quite regularly to keep the hair off my neck in this hot weather. Recently, I had someone comment that it looks like Chicken Joe from the movie “Surf’s Up” 🤔 I completely disagree and I think it is 💯 spot on for a Rubber Chicken, but I’ll let you be the judge.
