I'd like to congratulate Joe Manning for being awarded citizen of the year by the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce for his many years of community service. Among his many contributions, he was a volunteer on Temple Mountain's ski patrol for 24 years and he introduced many area young people to skiing. Congratulations, Joe!

2016 "Winter" was a No-Show

This "Winter reminds me of 1980, a similar snow-less winter that frustrated snow lovers. I'm very glad I'm not still in the ski business now!!

Usually I ski about 40-50 times a season since selling Temple Mt. This year maybe I made turns about 15 days. And the snowshoeing I do several days a week right out of my house only happened twice this year. I never even fired up my snowmobile once which is unheard of.

One of the usual perks of living in NH is skiing at Cannon Mt. My last time skiing was on March 12th at Cannon Mt with Masters racing buddy Bill Crabtree. Once the cloud cover cleared it was good skiing on the upper mountain. One of my favorite parts of the Cannon experience is the big vistas, especially looking East across Franconia Notch toward Mt. Lafayette. The only other New England ski mountain offering similar spectacular visitas is looking West from Wildcat toward Mt. Washington and Tuckerman's ravine.

If you wanted the big mountain vistas. the Rockies and the alps were the mountains to ski in 2016. New England this "winter" was a sea of browns. My grandson Hunter went with his freeski team to Big Sky and had several days of powder, which made me happy.

Perhaps, we skiers can take some wisdom from the post-season commentary of my favorite NFL coach, "It is what it is".

It's likely we New England skiers will caulk up 2016 as a painful character building experiences and hope that 2017 will be far better. However, weird weather appears to be the new normal as global climate change is evident. Mike Beebe

We are all sorry to hear about long time Temple Mountain neighbor, Ed Hampson;s passing. He is a beloved part of the Temple Mountain family. He had a small camp behind the West Area long before the lodge and Broadway trail were there. His son Jon still lives on Temple. We have many fond memories shared with the Hampsons.
