Happy 4th to Everyone!!!!! I thought I'd share a few tips for photographing fireworks. Here they are:

WHAT:

1. Get early to your location so that you can claim the best spot available!; 2. Bring a small ladder or a light but sturdy small stool with you just in case you need to raise your camera high; 3. Bring a small flash light with you so that you can illuminate your dials; 4. Cable release is also a great idea (remote or cordless, whichever you have); 5. Tripod of course;

HOW:

1. ISO - the lowest you can get away with
2. F-Stop - 8-11-13-16 start your way from one to another and see which one works best. Make sure you remember to readjust the settings if you decide to move or zoom
3. Lens - Whatever is in your bag!
4. Focus - Allow your camera to autofocus at first. After that, you should change to manual focus and leave it alone.
5. White balance: auto should do just fine.
6. Don't forget to turn off your VR or IR or whatever your vibration reduction mechanism is called on your camera or you'll be looking at blurry images
7. Mirror Lockup - if your camera has it, you should use it. BTW you should always bring your camera manual with you.
8. Shutter speed - leave it on bulb so that you can control the look you are after. It is OK to show cool effects when photographing fireworks. Just make sure that the effects are there because you want them and not because you are not sure how to create the image otherwise.
