666 with Bastille Day Capitalism Pig and Federal Stripe

Lee Harvey spent a considerable amount of time thinking about Identity. Perhaps his most thorough exploration of the subject is covered in his Bastille Day paintings. Paintings depicting decapitated people, things and animals.

He was continually toying with the idea of the personality and consciousness of a thing vs its identity.

In this painting, even though the head of the pig is cut off and you will never know its individual thoughts or emotions, even though it no longer has conscious volition, its identity as a pig remains, and that identity is something quite separate from its individual consciousness.

For Lee, the pig always represents American Capitalism.

In the 1980s, all over the country, religious doomsday believers papered giant posters all over urban cores with the message

"The Mark of the Beast
666
is Here!"

For Lee, it represented apocalyptic prophesy being presented as imminent, even though we all know that the apocalypse didn't occur in the 80s. In his paintings, it's the warning of The Joker. The possibility hanging over the gullible that the world is over, and Dark Forces are coming to claim it.

Finally there is his Federal Stripe. The signifier that something has become institutional, government protected, bureaucratically controlled.

Taken together it's a pretty complex and powerful image: Capitalism without volition and doomsday prophesies structurally embedded into bland government administration.

Lee Harvey was working to portray complex ideas in his Made In India series. He was consumed by the relationship of the West with India, the inextricable combination of desire, enlightenment, consumerism and racism that comprise the interaction of the cultures.
Fu***ng Made in India, underlined what he percieved as the commercialism of spiritualism and enlightenment.

He represented the mind expansion and enlightenment of Near Eastern philosophies with L*D.

Something that can blow your mind with its transcendental experience. But something that is cheap, can be purchased for under 20 dollars, can leave you tripping, and perhaps used as a method of control by the government.

Lee had read the ultra racist book that fuels the xenophobia of modern day villains like Stephen Miller and Steve Bannon: The Camp of the Saints.

From the book, he took the image of a bloated deformed toddler and he visually conflated it with images of the buddha and the freighter which carries all the refugees with the Titanic.

In this series, he explores the ideas of replacement iconographies on several levels.

In the mertantilized trade of enlightenment for money, its is cheapened. And at the end, what version of the original are you really getting? Is the L*D opening the way to Enlightenment similar to the teachings of Buddha, or does trying to have the experience without the cost merely give you hatred, coarseness and a racist caricaturization experience?

Lee goes one step further with the idea of making a trippy, happy version. For Kids.

F**k the Pigs and All American Jesus Bastille Painting by Lee Harvey.
Lee did a series of portraits of Jesus as an All American Rock Star, in star spangled jacket and shirts. Most of them exist in private collections around the US, but the Trust has his original Gay Redneck Jesus and this one, a variation of his Bastille Day paintings.
In the All American Jesus paintings, he emblazons the things he thinks would be associated with him were he to be here on Earth in the modern era.
This one is self explanatory. His identity remains as all American even though the Christ visage has been brutally removed.

The Muse as SemiRamis, the Queen of Heaven.

Lee Harvey lingered on his Muse series for the final five years of his life.

He was never able to identify what drove him to paint every single day for almost thirty years. To be possessed of a painting idea and explore that idea across hundreds of variations.

He thought a lot about his inspiration, which he conceived as his Muse.

The Muse, for Harvey, was a composite of several women in his life that had inspired, supported and driven his rich internal dream life.

It is one of his most compelling and exquisite paintings. Her hair is metallic silver, and the corona is framed in metallic gold.
