I decided I didn’t like social media – the dopamine hits, the time suck, keeping up with the perceived awesomeness of it all. So, I traveled a lot without posting at all. Then, I spent a long weekend exploring with friends – wonderful people I wouldn’t have known without Instagram. I thought of all the friends (and job hires) I’ve made because of these online connections and decided to dig out the old password and move forward in the spirit of gratitude.

I know I’ll regret sharing this photo—much more flesh than I’m accustomed to preserving in digital form—but the polar plunge was spectacular and I want to remember it. Besides, John and I are old enough to know we need to take care of our bodies and much too old to care what others think of them anyway. IAATA standards restrict visitors from approaching or touching animals. The animals themselves are free of such restrictions. If you sit still on the beach and make wheezy barking noises, a weener (newly weened seal pup) may approach. This one came up to our legs, looked up at us with sappy eyes, and seemed to beg for milk and sympathy. No petting. Must resist. Must not pet the weener. ☺️

Imagine Jabba-the-Hutts chest bumping. Imagine pencil fighting with bratwursts. Fat slapping fat, accompanied by the worst sounds of a public bathroom. 😳 On impact, the seals try to cut each other’s necks and faces with incisors. These animals are gross and irresistible—like an entire species of thirteen-year-old boys.

We waved goodbye to the kids for this trip. Two important reasons why: Antarctica is no joke 🤑 and to you’ve got to be old enough to contain your own vomit. 🤢 (What age is that BTW because I’m pretty sure we’re behind?) Fifty hours of cruising the Drake Passage is no joke, people. But worth every penny and used up barf bag. Especially when these little cuties come out to great you.
