At the core of sustainability, there is a shift in mindset. For me, it took root years ago during my travels. Previously having worked in the ‘mainstream’ luxury hospitality industry, my perspective evolved as I started engaging in community work in Asia, which brought to light how many hotels (globally) were and are simply worlds within their own, completely removed from their environments and the needs of the local communities they operate in—prioritising the experiences and services within their confines over meaningful engagement with culture and community.

Côte was founded from a need to (re)connect what happens inside and outside of hotels’ boundary walls, fostering a symbiotic relationship that transcends the traditional hospitality model. This transcendence requires us to go beyond our current thinking—to go out and “see for ourselves”, looking at and learning from our environments, and making sure the land and the communities in which we operate, interact with, and serve are considered in all that we do.
The focus is clear: a kind and considerate approach toward the destinations we operate in. Because it is what I believe to be hospitality that is relevant to the world today.

It requires courage to break ingrained habits of routine, behaviour, and thought. It’s uncomfortable—I believe most of us in transition towards a more “sustainable mindset” feel discomfort at one point or another—but it is that discomfort that shows we are reframing something that matters to us.
