What a confluence..of cultures, mountains, food, oxygen, rivers, flowers and us, Gypsies! On 16th May, the 9 Gypsies landed in Lukla..the world’s most dangerous airport! And then the trek to the highest mountain in the world – Mt. Everest, started, right from the airport!
Nepal is beautiful and being home to the highest mountain ranges in the world, it is natural that we chose this trek over all else...what’s life without a little adventure! Over the next 8 days, we walked and walked, climbed, fell, suffered mountain sickness, experienced lack of basic oxygen, froze in dry cold(-6 C), slept in more layers than we have ever done (3 layers of clothes, sleeping bag, blanket and more!), rode a pony, flew in a chopper, drank more water than we have ever done, understood what it feels like to not have a shower in over 10 days, admired the Sherpa spirit, used every boulder as a bathroom in hiding(!), downed ourselves in honey ginger lemon tea(hardly!)....BUT WE ALL DID IT! Reaching Everest Base Camp (5364 Mtrs) on 23rd May was an accomplishment, a target, a dream and bucket a list tick for most of us. And then there were celebrations too...2 birthdays and every excuse to party (even at such high altitudes, we found a French bakery & hot chocolate!).
120 kms over rock and sand, rhododendrons for company and armed with competent guides and emergency procedures/equipment & the strongest of will in place, we knew we would succeed, even before we started on the trek.
Cheers to the Gypsies....the spirit lives on! Making new friends in the lap of the Himalayas over Sherpa Stew was the greatest adventure. Sagarmatha Zindabad!
