A post-crisis art boom in an ancient capital.
Prices have dropped, but the Greek debt crisis has not dampened Athens’s thriving arts scene. Recent years have seen a surge of galleries, collectives and nonprofit art organizations built for leaner times, like Radio Athènes, which hosts pop-up lectures and performances, and the immigration-focused Nomadic Architecture Network. In October, the renovated EMST National Museum of Contemporary Art opened in a former brewery, while the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, designed by Renzo Piano, opened in August. Athens will co-host the 2017 edition of documenta, the influential art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany, since it started in 1955. — CHARLY WILDER

Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, has named Athens World Book Capital for 2018 on the recommendation of the programme’s Advisory Committee.

The Athens Social Atlas aims at highlighting key structures and processes that constitute the city’s social fabric and to highlight the interactions between social processes and the built environment.

Most of the entries in the atlas are based on current and past research on Athens that generated original datasets and led to novel analyses and findings, which to some extent remain little-known.

The entries are as diverse as the city they refer to, in terms of size and accompanying material. Some articles analyse the entire metropolitan area, for example the geographic distribution of Athenians according to their income.

Others, on the contrary, focus on one residential quarter (for example, Kypseli) or even on one street only (Ippokratous Str.). The articles have been classified under thematic groups. In this sense, the atlas is more of a reference book, a broad thematic dictionary of Athens and not a traditional collective volume with closely related individual chapters that follow a central idea.

The inscriptions in an oracle used to communicate with Apollo that was recently discovered in Athens.

The discovery was made during an excavation in Kerameikos by the German Archaeological Institute at Athens.

From June 23rd to 26th the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) comes to life through a 4-day event.

For the first time visitors will have the chance to enter the new facilities of the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece and enjoy the Stavros Niarchos Park at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

The rich program entitled Metamorphosis and includes cultural, sports and educational activities. More than 400 Greek and international artists participate and all visitors are welcome to enter for free.

Opening hours: Thursday, June 23 -> 18:00 – 04:00 & from Friday, June 24 at 18:00 till Sunday, June 26 at 04:00 continuously.
