In the Atlanta area? Stop by Cohutta Trout Unlimited's monthly meeting on Tuesday May 28 as Michael presents fishing in the Brazilian Amazon. Event starts at 6pm.
Something big is coming. Stay tuned...
Threading the needle. Michael casts to tight cover for peacock bass.
Now you know exactly why their beaks are shaped this way!
A quick check-in with Flora and Robin to see how their morning was.
The Rio Negro water levels are perfect, and we practically have it all to ourselves. We landed 294 fish...YESTERDAY.
Aren't you about ready to experience this place with us?
Michael and Anderson sneak in a few casts before the guests return to the mothership.
Testing out Winston Rod Company's new AIR 2 MAX rods in the harsh conditions of the Brazilian Amazon. Simply put, these rods are spectacular. Throwing a popper on an 8 weight or large streamers on the 9 weight, these have quickly become our go-to rods.
Jackson's first arapaima was estimated at 170 pounds! It takes a team to safely release one of these bad boys.
Winston sent Michael two prototypes from the new AIR II MAX series. Here's how they performed in our jungle waters.
Our last day of the 2023 Season on the Rio Negro. A beautiful ending to a spectacular year. We are so grateful for our guests, and what a privilege it is to share this experience with them!!
Our Rio da Lua location just blows us away.
Want to know exactly how much our Crew loves Danny Reed of @crookedcreekholler ?
Danny Reed has fished with us every year since our first exploratory in the Uatumã Reserve in 2017, and he is beloved by our Guides and Crew.
The number one reason why our Guests return has very little to do with the fishing. It's actually all about the whole experience and the friendships they've made with our Crew.
Our Crew accepts our Guests as a member of their family, and it shows. This mutual respect between Guest and Crew is extremely unique, especially for this part of the world.
Many outfitters in the Amazon and around the world expect their employees to be invisible, only appearing when they are needed. We are 100% against this policy.
Treating our Crew with respect is one of our Core Values. In fact, it was a major reason why Michael started this operation in Brazil. He was furious when he saw how some outfitters treated their guides in the Amazon, and he chose to do something about it.
Our Crew eats the same food as our Guests, and is welcome to join our customers at mealtime. This is unheard of in Brazil. They sleep in air-conditioned Crew quarters aboard our mothership, or on a support vessel that rivals most motherships in the Amazon. They enjoy hot water showers and daily laundry services.
All tips are combined and split equally, no exceptions.
For comparison, most outfitters here feed their Crew rice and beans every meal, and perhaps a fish if a Crew member catches one. They eat out of sight from the Guests in cramped quarters, and sleep in cage boats (open air riverboats) sharing one bathroom and no shower facilities.
Typically the fishing manager on an Amazon trip collects the tips (pocketing most of it for himself), and divides out the rest to his favorites.

Listen carefully for the play by play from a favorite Guest last season (disregard Michael's Brazilian music blasting way and the Guides chatting). We just love it when a plan comes together!

Those incredible colors can still vanish in the dark waters of the Rio Negro.

Carefully releasing our bigger fish way back in the sticks minimizes predation by larger creatures lurking below. Typically a large caiman or freshwater dolphin can't out-maneuver a peacock bass, but don't have much of a chance as they recover from being caught. Treat these amazing creatures with care.
