Nuestra Historia

Go Tico! started as an organization connecting local Middle School students to the small community of La Flor in the Northern Central section of the country. This first, 10-day venture ambitiously brought together a small group of students who committed themselves to living in home stays in the 300-person community, teaching daily English classes at the local elementary school and fundraising beforehand to raise money to start a school library. What an experience! Armed with 140+ books that year, our first group spent 10 days making life-long connections with the local community, with students during the day and families and other community members at night during evening community-building events. When we weren’t engaging with local kids in La Flor, we explored the area: cooling off in a local waterfall-fed swimming hole, exploring a wildlife rescue and hiking to a hidden lake in a secluded National Park. The trip was such an incredible experience that we couldn’t wait to get home and plan another!

Since that first trip, Go Tico! has reached out to schools around the Madison-area to expand this travel opportunity to other Middle and High School students. Each of our school trips conducts a wonderful, community-building fundraiser to raise money for continued contributions to the La Flor library as well as scholarships for future student participants.

We have also begun to expand our travel offerings, always with the goal of allowing travelers to truly experience Tico culture and explore the biodiversity of the country, while having personable and enthusiastic Go Tico! directors to support their travel each step of the way. Youth soccer camps connecting local and visiting soccer players in 10 days of training and cultural exchange. Spanish immersion retreats for adults or families to live and experience Tico food and culture away from tourist hot-spots. English Language travel to study English from a certified ESL instructor (and Go Tico! co-owner) while on vacation touring one the most beautiful countries in the world. Small group customized itineraries or retreats. These are only a slice of what we can provide, and we are always eager to look for new opportunities to connect visitors to a part of Costa Rica they might not otherwise see.
