Well, it wasn't the best of winters. We were tied up with lots of stressful things that were less than ideal but we still managed to have some fun with our dogs which was very much needed and appreciated. Its amazing how mentally grounding it is to spend some time exploring with and loving these amazing creatures we call our family!

There is something disconcerting about starting fall training and a sizable building project in the same weekend. One has us excited for the onset of winter while the other has us terrified. We are about 6 weeks behind schedule but at least we have a good supervisor in Scratch keeping us on task.

It’s been a couple days of beautiful sunsets, northern lights, and a beautiful dog team. This time of year in the interior of Alaska is something really special! Where the sunrises blend into sunsets in an almost perpetual state of pastels dominating the sky during the short day and the dancing greens and reds of the aurora take over the night sky.

Here at Douglas Fir Mushing, Matt and I have made a commitment to each and every one of our 24 dogs, that they will live their lives out with us. No matter if they were born and raised here or came to us at different stages of life they will live with us until the end. With that being said, on a regular basis we have anywhere between 7 to 10 dogs living inside our relatively small cabin. Once a dog is retired from being a sled dog they will find a warm and comfortable place inside.
It’s not always calm and peaceful with this many dog in a small place but once they all find their spot for the night it settles in nicely. It’s pretty amazing to look around and see that so many different personalities can live comfortably in such a small place.
We are all one big happy family and we love every chaotic minute of it.

Allagash and Gwiinzii leading the charge on todays run. Gwiinzii has been our go to lead dog to train the young dogs up front. She may be one of the smallest dogs in the kennel, but she’s all business and a hard charger. She’s also bossy, bitchy and beautiful! She needs to be all these things when she’s dragging 80 pound meat heads around! We wish we had 100 Gwiinzii’s!

Fall is winding down and winter is right around the corner. With cooler temperatures, we’ve been getting the dogs out as much as possible.
Our 6 pups are so much fun. Every day they are improving. Sometimes we forget that they aren’t even a year old yet. It’s hard to tell which ones are puppies and which ones are the veterans.
We’ve been taking advantage of the new property that we bought last year. It’s 3.5 miles down the road from the kennel. Humans and dogs are enjoying the new trail/road. It’s a nice change from the trail we normally see every time out. Hopefully in a little more than a year we’ll be able to run dogs to the property and drink a beer brewed right in the neighborhood.

We got some snow and rain last night. As you can see, the dogs are absolutely loving it! Colder temperatures mean longer runs and new trails. As for us humans, we didn't enjoy it as much. We did enjoy watching the the dogs perform today. This was their best run of the season! With only 116 days before the start of the Yukon Quest. We still need your help.
