Pahanthuda Waterfall

The Kandy Esala Perahera 2021 | Grand Randoli Procession



The glorious citadel of Kandy comes alive every year with bright lights, fire breathers, jugglers, musicians, acrobats, traditional dancers, drummers, colours and magnificence; all coming together in an iconic parade, for a noble procession that began over 1700 years ago to commemorate the gods and pay homage to the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha and it is considered the oldest cultural event in the world

The Kandy Esala Perahera, also known as the Dalada Perahera or the ‘festival of the tooth’, is considered the epitome of the country’s Buddhist celebrations, blessed with divinity and blessings for this ancient island by means of rainfall to ensure a bountiful harvest. The festival spans across 11 days with ceremonies that have captured the awe of audiences across the globe, and will once again parade the streets of Kandy this year from the 13th to the 23rd of August; under vigilant health and safety guidelines in lieu of the pandemic this year.

Thalpe Beach

Thalpe Beach is a beach situated in the Southern province of Sri Lanka, close to the city of Galle. It is a popular destination among both locals and foreigners. There are vibrant shops, restaurant and various water sports related activities to do in the surrounding area of Thalpe.

Sigiriya

The distance from the Colombo is 169km and is on the way to Anuradhapura or polonnaruwa. Sigiriya was designated as a world heritage site in 1982. Sigiriya is famous for it's palace ruins on top of a massive 200 meter high rock surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures.

The rock itself is a lava plug left over from an ancient long extinct volcano. It is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescoes), which are similar to those found at Ajanta Caves in India. It is generally agreed, however, that the Sigiriya Frescoes exhibit a uniquely Sri Lankan style. Sigiriya may have been inhabited through prehistoric times.

It was used as a rock-shelter mountain monastery from about the 5th century BC, with caves prepared and donated by devotees of the Buddhist Sangha. Sigiriya Museum shows photos of the excavation of Sigiriya, reproductions of the frescoes, examples and translations of some of the graffiti on the Mirror Wall, and artifacts excavated from the site. You can probably view the museum in about 1 hour. Since the museum is outside the main entrance,

Yala National Park

There are six national parks and three wildlife sanctuaries in the vicinity of Yala. Among the largest is Lunugamvehera National Park. The park is situated in the dry semi-arid climatic region and rain is received mainly during the northeast monsoon. Yala hosts a variety of ecosystems ranging from moist monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands. It is one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Sri Lanka. Yala harbours 215 bird species including six endemic species of Sri Lanka. The number of mammals that has been recorded from the park is 44, and it has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. The area around Yala has hosted several ancient civilisations. Two important pilgrim sites, Sithulpahuwa and Magul Vihara, are situated within the park.

Kandy Esala Perahera

Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the oldest cultural and religious festivals in the world which is taking place annually in Kandy.
The month of Esala, during which period this annual pageant is usually held, had been considered a month of celebrations and festivity in Sri Lanka. Dalada procession and the social traditions are linked so much together; the month of Esala has been named as the procession month because of the Esala feast.The Kandy Esala Perahera has been in existence since the time of King Keerthi Sri Meghavanna when the tooth relic of Lord Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka.
The Kandy Esala Perehara taking place in 2021 is the 1711th Kandy perehara and is mainly focuses on differentiating Sri Lankan festival platform by adding value through extended service quality by addressing one of the main issues which is media facilities for visiting tourists including foreign and local media.
Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the main tourist attracting events of the year attracting over 200,000 tourists every year as the city of Kandy is a recognised World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
