What are the top Digital Marketing Trends for 2019?
Digital Marketing Trends are changing all the time, which is why it’s important to have a company such as Kevllar, to help your site and brand evolve with the times. While there are many trends on the horizon, we’ve narrowed it down to the top five we feel will be most relevant and helpful in driving traffic to your business or service in 2019.
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
What is AI?
Many hear this term and think of sci-fi movies and scary machines named Hal, taking over the world. It seems like something foreboding that will happen in the future. Yet, AI is already used every day. AI is merely when a collection of computers analyze data rapidly and this data is analyzed to understand behaviors and patterns.
How can I use AI to market my website?
SEO marketing is one way of taking advantage of AI, and Google’s algorithms are already employing these techniques every time keywords are entered into it’s search platform. Staying on top of SEO marketing, employing Google AdWords and having a site that has relevant content that will be found by search engines are all ways Kevllar can help you to use AI to your advantage. AI is also used to gain insight on your customers and narrow down your target audience.
2. Voice search
To keep up with Alexa, Google Home and the smart speaker trend, a new wave of digital marketing may include optimizing your website for voice search, by predicting what prospective customers will ask when searching for your site or service. Mostly in a conversational tone. Unlike standard google searches which may include two keywords, audio searches are usually a full question such as, “what time does the mall close?” instead of “mall hours.”
How can I optimize my website for audio searches?
After narrowing down what your customers will ask when in need of your site and service, the next step is to incorporate those questions and phrases throughout your website. This can be done through a FAQ section that answers those questions, or you could include blog posts on the various topics and questions. If you are optimizing for "restaurants serving dinner now," you could write content that says, "We serve dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday thru Saturday." This would get picked up and allow you to rank higher with voice search.
3. Chatbots
Chatbots are becoming a popular tool that will likely continue to increase in 2019.
What are Chatbots?
Chatbots are more than likely behind the little pop up that asks if you need assistance when you’re visiting a website. The Digital Marketing Institute describes them as, “specialized software that acts as a virtual "concierge," communicating and assisting users, interacting in a natural way, primarily through text chat windows, with verbal interactions are also possible.”
According to Forbes.com, by 2022, it's estimated that chatbots will help businesses save over $8 billion per year. This is because the Bots allow users to get personalized, focused interactions without exhausting human resources.
How can Chatbots help my business?
Chatbots can help with customer service tasks and tie into your various systems to answer repetitive customer questions like: "When will my package be delivered?" "What time is my appointment?" "Where are you located?"
Their effectiveness in 2018 is already showing a significant increase in usage, and that use is likely to continue growing for digital marketing in 2019. Contact us to discuss if Chatbots are right for your site.
4. Video Marketing
What is video marketing?
It’s just what it sounds like, using videos as a marketing tool, a way of promoting your business or service in a way that showcases your brand’s personality. According to the Digital Marketing Institute, “73% of all Americans engage with YouTube. That means more than half of all Americans are watching videos, and a lot of those videos are created in the service of digital marketing. YouTube is the most popular way of delivering video content but other social media platforms can also be used to distribute your content. Whether you're creating videos for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube or even your own website, it is a top-tier, incredibly effective digital marketing tool.”
Live video or streaming using social media influencers is also increasing in popularity as a way to draw in target audiences and showcase your brand.
5. Quality Content
Is Content Marketing still effective?
Yes, but the content marketing of 2019 will continue to evolve. Generalized content is no longer the effective tool it once was. Content marketing continues to be an essential component of digital marketing, but unlike the content of yesterday, aka filler, the new wave in content is creating content that matters. Paying attention to the quality, using SEO marketing and analytics, and addressing the intended target audience. Your customers.
As we discussed in an earlier post on Google My Business, this is also now an important part …

Cannabis and Christmas?

How do you market Cannabis for Christmas?

Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry and shop. Christmas is a busy time of year for retail companies, counting on the holiday season to turn a profit and some cannabis companies are also taking advantage of the busy retail season. To continue our, “Oh Cannabis” series, we’re going to talk about the holiday season and how it relates to cannabis marketing. As we will discuss in another post on marketing and cannabis, “Weeding out the Confusion about Cannabis Marketing” there are strict advertising and marketing regulations when it comes to selling pot. (Companies are getting creative with branding and Health Canada is issuing warnings.)

What are Cannabis companies marketing for Christmas?

Marketing companies have jumped on the advent calendar bandwagon over the past few years with everything from candy to toys and movie tie-ins. While the calendar market was once dominated by chocolates, allergies in children and parents not wanting to add to the sugar overload of the season have prompted other offerings, and many are opting for less traditional calendars.

Traditionally, these calendars are marketed to children, excited to open a window each day to reveal a prize or treat counting down to the day when Santa will finally arrive. What about advent calendars for adults? Cannabis companies in BC, are getting creative filling advent calendars with cannabis. Already a bestseller for the past couple of years, the issue may not be the product but the method of delivery, itself.
For the second year in a row, CannaCalendar is selling cannabis for Christmas, offering 25 days of different strains of ma*****na in their calendars.

A spokesperson for the company, Bobbi Hopeful, told CTV news, the “packaging is still hilarious but not new, and the compartments are filled with different strains than previous versions.” According to Hopeful and the same CTV article, "They sold out like crazy last year and our elves are working hard to stuff each calendar with 25 half-gram samples."

The issue with this may be in the marketing. According to the Cannabis Act section on packaging and labelling, cannabis products must not contain images, graphics or sell a certain kind of lifestyle. No graphics, nothing colourful. Nothing that will appeal to minors. Fun packaging in a calendar that usually counts down the days when Santa will arrive is clearly at odds with this rule. Another strict rule under the Cannabis Act is that companies marketing may not appeal to youth or children under any circumstances.

While marketing rules and laws may differ from province to province, (why it’s important to learn what they are in your area of hire someone who does), Mark Haden, BC University professor of public health, agrees this is a problem.
In the same CTV article Haden said, "It's reasonable to assume that advent calendars will be opened by children. That is not a good idea."

He also expressed concerns about brightly coloured packaging appealing to minors, which is in direct conflict with the advertising and marketing regulations under the Cannabis Act.

Cannabis companies may have to be creative in their marketing with an emerging market and so many restrictions but they can’t violate Health Canada and federal law and expect to get away with it for long. That’s why it’s important to use an expert SEO or digital marketing team familiar with the dynamics of digital cannabis marketing.

What you give or get for Christmas is up to you. If you’re a cannabis company you may just want to be sure your marketing efforts aren’t going to land you a hefty fine (up to five million dollars) or prison time. One thing we can all agree on, no one wants that for Christmas.
