“A communal oven is an oven that the community members share and use together. In Morocco, using a communal oven to bake your bread and other baked goods is the norm. The ovens are run by workers whose primary job is to bake the edible goods of the community in the large oven, the majority of which is bread.”

We just returned from an amazing Immersion Beyond to Ecuador and the Galapagos. Thanks to our adventurers for joining us again and making this once in a lifetime trip truly magical!

First day in the Galapagos! Yesterday the last of our gang arrived in Quito and this morning we flew to Baltra Island - an uninhabited island - well uninhabited by people… there are tons of Iguanas 🦎 several of which greeted us as we entered the small zero carbon airport terminal (the first in the world, according to the signs) we zipped through the entrance process, go our special Galapagos stamp in our passport, collected are bags and caught the bus to take us to our yacht for the week (which involved our first ride in a zodiac).

Once aboard, we enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by our first adventure. We took the Zodiacs to Bachas beach in the north side of Santa Cruz, had a nature walk where we saw turtle nesting areas, more iguanas. One single flamingo, and our first blue footed b***y. Then we hit the water for some snorkeling. Several people saw sea turtles and two people saw a small shark.

We returned to the boat for sunset cocktails, had a briefing about tomorrow’s activities, went to the bar for a cocktail reception to meet the crew, and then enjoyed another amazing meal. Phew! What a great first day!

We are going places ❤️🇪🇨

Cleanup and rebuilding continues in the hardest hit region of Morocco, but the rest of Morocco is safe and welcoming visitors! Bernie Cook, photographer, was leading a tour of fellow photographers during the earthquake and talks about his experience.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we are coordinating an Earthquake Relief fundraiser with the non-profit wing of one of our partners. Since the immediate needs of the people most impacted are being met, we have decided to focus on the larger task of helping families rebuild in one of the hardest hit villages, Atlas Ijjoukak. Our goal is to help three families rebuild their homes.

The donations received in this campaign will go directly to the local village association (Association Tiouizi for Development, Environment & Sport) who will manage the rebuilding.

Any donation would be appreciated!

First and foremost, we would like to take a moment to thank the hundreds of you who have sent us messages over the last few days. The outpouring of love and support that you have shown us and the people of Morocco through us, has buoyed us as we process the devastating losses of our fellow countrymen and women.

All of us at Morocco Immersion, our friends, family, and current adventurers in Morocco are all fine and have not been directly impacted by the earthquake.

We have had so many people ask how they can help.If you are planning a trip to Morocco in the next few weeks, the best way for you to show your support is to continue with your plans and reconsider before you cancel. Tourism is the lifeblood of the economy and you will be welcomed with open arms. Far from a burden, your arrival will be taken as a show of support of and solidarity with the people.

Although the media has dubbed this the “Marrakech earthquake”, the damage there is relatively minimal. Riads are open and operating normally, tours of the Medina are still happening, and Jemaa el F’na is as busy as ever. Bahia Palace and the Saadian tombs have some damage and are temporarily closed while repairs are done, but both are expected to reopen by the end of the week. There is some damage to Koutoubia Mosque, but it is remarkably still standing. Other tourist regions of the country including Tizi n’Tichka, Dades, Merzouga, Fes, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Rabat, etc, have only had minor or no impacts.

The vast majority of the destruction and loss of life is in the small villages located in the High Atlas Mountains southwest of Marrakech. The losses these villages have sustained are staggering and heartbreaking.

If you are already a member of our extended Morocco Immersion family (aka, you have traveled with us previously) and would like to help, we are asking that donations be made directly to Tiouizi Association located in Tahanoute - one of the areas in the region that was heavily impacted. Moroccans seemed to have immediate necessities covered, so the money raised by this association will go directly to helping the local families rebuild their homes.

We are working with the non-profit wing of one of our partner tour companies to help facilitate the fundraising. So, donations can be made either through them or can be wired directly to the Tiouizi Assocation. We will post the pertinent information regarding how to donate by tomorrow end of day.

Day 4 of England with a Little Bit of Paris. This morning we bid our cute and comfortable hotel in Bath a fond au revoir and traveled to London, once again with our private driver. We pulled up to the Conrad St. James a couple of hours before the “official” check-in time, but since all of our rooms were ready, we were all treated to an early check-in. The customer service here really lived up to the hotel’s 5-star rating!

After a quick break, we headed to the British Muesum for a private guided tour. We got a little bonus excitement when the fire alarm went off and we were all required to evacuate! Fortunately, it was a false alarm and we were all allowed back inside in short order.

After our tour, we walked to Covent Garden for an early dinner at Punjab - one of the best Indian restaurants in London.

We finished dinner in time to head back to the hotel to freshen up a bit before heading to nearby Victoria Palace Theatre where we got to see Hamilton.

Our hotel was just one tube stop away from the theater, so we were happy to return to our comfortable rooms (complete with turn down service) after a long day!

We are excited to report that our first trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos scheduled for Feb 1-10th is officially sold out!

We are maintaining a waitlist, though, so if you were interested in joining us and missed this one, feel free to contact us so that we can add your name to the list. If we have enough interest, we may plan another one sooner rather than later!

Day 3 of England and a Little bit of Paris. Today, we joined a small group tour operated by the amazing Mad Max Tours. I did a similar tour many years ago and it was just as good as I remembered.

First we left Bath and the southern portion of the Cotswolds to make it to Salisbury plain just as Stonehenge opened to the public. I had hoped to do one of the “inside the stones” tour, but that was not offered on the days that we spent in Bath - so we will save that for the next time. Still getting to Stonehenge as it opens is a different experience than arriving when the throngs of tourists coming from London are there.

After visiting here, we headed to Avebury - the much larger stone circle with a huge henge… so big in fact that a small town is actually in the middle of it. This place is great because you can get up close and personal with the stones and walk the path along the giant “henge” earthworks dug with shoulder bones of animals instead of shovels.

After our stop here, we headed to two charming villages in the southern part of the Cotswolds. The first was Lacock. If you are a movie buff like me, then you can easily recognize that this town as the filming location for many movies and tv shoes including Harry Potter and Pride & Prejudice (the good one with Colin Firth as Darcy). After enjoying Sunday Roast at one of the village’s two pubs, we joined our driver/guide for a walk around the city.

Next, we visited the small but VERY beautiful village of Castle Comb (this was the town of Wall in the movie Stardust). We walked down the one street of the town and visited the church. Unfortunately, there was an event at the former manor house (now hotel), so we weren’t able to see that (although we did see some very fancy cars pulling into the gate to attend said event).

This was the last stop of the tour and we headed back to Bath for our final night there.

By the way, we had amazing weather and only got a small taste of the English rain during our visit to Stonehenge. It started just as we got off of the shuttle bus and finished just as we were leaving. But, by the afternoon blue skies and sunshine had returned.
