People often ask me, what kind of photography I love best ... I struggle, in that moment, usually. I love photography but actually, if I really had to choose one favourite, I suspect I might choose event photography. I get to roam then, with my beloved 70-200mm lens, and capture people while they a…

Portrait photography ... and how I see it.

A friend posted the following story on my Facebook wall yesterday. It confirmed what I have always thought about portrait photography ... the photographer oftentimes photographs the relationship between themselves and their client. It's about mutual trust and respect but it's also about what the su…

I know some good people ...

Thanks to Abi, thanks to Simon, thanks to Will ... the 3 of them are responsible for me having my first professional photography shoot here in England. And thanks to Kim too. I'm not sure it would have unfolded had she not stopped at that church, the one in the mist, gifting me time to remember th…

Ending a marriage is more difficult than I expected ... probably due to not expecting it at all. And I had lost that passionate intensity I would experience when out with my camera. There was a bit of a flatline when it came to photography, as I worked out where to live, how to live, what I really wanted ... All that 'I' stuff :-) Then 2 days ago, my lovely friend Kim, who has repeatedly dusted me off during this first month out in the world alone, stopped at this church out in Surrey. All that familiar bubbling passion and joy rose up inside of me as I took out my camera and I could have spent hours there, working with my camera. Here's one of the images from that day when feeling returned to this photographer's soul. Dates for 2016 workshops in Italy will be up on my website, and all over this, by the end of November. I'm finding my way ...

My lovely friend, Kim, took me out to lunch today and we ended up in a pretty little village called Godalming. Have I already mentioned that the charity shops in England blow my mind? Books, really good secondhand books, start at .50p and don't go higher than 2 pounds. And they're all in English.…

This Nature Reserve ... I was introduced to it yesterday. Thank you, Andy. And then there's the people, who have been incredibly kind and polite so far. Yesterday I wandered into a pub. They had 'Rugby' written on the board outside. I asked if they were screening world cup rugby matches, and ye…

I lost most of my 2015 photography season to a marriage break-up. I thought it would be a momentary blip, or perhaps better still, a mistake. It wasn't, and so I've moved to England for now, where I'll soon be putting together a schedule for my 2016 workshops. I wrote a blogpost telling the story so I'll link to it here, in case people would like to know more. I'm also available to teach personalised introduction to photography and your camera workshops, on request, at the moment. I'm near London, so don't hesitate to contact me, if you'd like to know more.

I had to make two attempts at logging in this morning ... my password almost forgotten. It has been one of those years. So full of mistakes and sadness although, if I learn from it all, perhaps I can already begin to re-frame it positively. Lessons learned so far ... perhaps. I have learned about…

A taste of Genova ... the very best taste, at Il Genovese. This Ligurian restaurant is one of 'our favourite places' on the workshops. Here, we get to experience top quality Genovese cooking, with the possibility of photographing Roberto Panizza, the King of Pesto ... so-named because he organises the bi-annual World Pesto Championship there in the city, at work creating his world famous pesto. Here's a sample of the food we ate recently. It was divine.

Last week ... this was the dinner starter at Il Genovese. It's a little of this, a little of that, to be shared between five. Outi, my Finnish friend living in Liguria. Alessandra and Davide, lovely Italian friends from Genova. And Gabrielle, my Australian client, the one who has become a lovely…

Finally, I am back and teaching photography workshops in Genova. It's been a busy but satisfying 3 days here in the city. There are a couple of new blog posts up about it on my website but here, a link to a post where I claim Genova is, quite possibly, the best city in the world. More news to follow in the weeks ahead.

The intensity of these days in Italy has been quite incredible. I have been teaching photography workshops here in Genova and they have been everything ... a privilege, a challenge, so much fun, exhausting, exhilarating. They have been about people ... about breakfasts at Douce - sitting outside in…

2015 continued with a nasty staph infection picked up while on an epic journey through Italy. A long course of antibiotics cleared that up, as well as the lung infection I caught there. Taking vitamin D now and feeling like quite the princess. Normal service coming any day now. I'm sorry for the silence here ... it definitely was not my intention xx

Quietly working behind the scenes with a lovely language school in Genova, talking to people who demonstrate Italian cooking, preparing for photography workshops in 2015. News to follow soon. I will announce it here.

There are so many reasons to keep the photography workshops small, limited to just 3-4 women each time but this post says a lot about why I want to keep it small. I've met so many special people so far via my photography workshops ...and I expect to meet more. I'm keeping it small.

Why I don’t necessarily want to grow “bigger.” (And why it’s OK if you don’t, either.) Over the years, dozens of lovely people have said to me… “So, Alex, when are you going to launch a BIG online program? You’re a natural teacher. You’re so great with words. You could be selling e-courses o…

And here's a small glimpse of Rebecca's work too. And her words about working with me: 'You know us teens; we're bad at giving things a chance before deciding whether it's fun or boring, and I honestly thought it would be boring. But no, it was incredibly fun!
And not only was Di a good teacher, she is also one of those people who is easy to kind of connect with. And for me, that is very important. She taught us a lot more than just photography.
It was a great experience and I definitely have been inspired to photograph more.'

Karoline, one of my lovely Norwegian photography workshop clients, created this beautiful series of photographs. It's only a small taste of her work and this montage doesn't give a true sense of the entirety of the images but, for now, a taste and words on how they found working with me ...

'Working with Di has been incredibly fun! At first, I thought it was going to be challenging learning everything in English, but it was surprisingly easy.
She is a really great teacher, and a really great person. I will definitely start taking a lot more pictures now that I know how to do it properly.
It has been an amazing experience that I will never forget!'
