Nils Mönkemeyer will perform the world premiere of Dieter Ammann’s Viola Concerto, No Templates with the Sinfonieorchester Basel under the direction of Fabien Gabel. The performance, which will take place on 22nd January at the Stadtcasino Basel, is the culmination and climax of a long genesis for Ammann, who is fascinated by the deep tessitura of the viola and hearing the instrument at the bottom of its range. In this new viola concerto by Dieter Ammann – two things stand out: genuine tonality and political influences. Nils Mönkemeyer, for whom Dieter Ammann wrote the concerto, says: “Viola and orchestra enter into a close dialogue, whereby the orchestra is often something like a shadow of the solo voice and there is an enormous interplay of energies.”

“From the outset, Kateřina Kněžíková's timbre seduces with its superlative plasticity and its scintillating brilliance. The artist is renowned as a Mozartian and adept at bel canto and the result is the notably fabulous flexibility of her voice, with luminous undulations. The palette of nuances is rich and it is ideally suited to the melodic line of Strauss' lieder. A musician experienced in opera, Jakub Hrůša Conductor is a discreet piano accompanist so as not to drown out his soloist but precise and attentive in the musical treatment of the piano part. The Vier Letzte Lieder discography is full of legendary references but Kněžíková creates a beautiful space for herself among them. The timbre is fresher and lighter than other singers and she does not seek to darken her voice artificially as can sometimes be heard in this autumnal score, but her musical approach particularly succeeds through the malleable beauty and the flexibility of the voice. Jakub Hrůša at the podium of the masterful Bamberger Symphoniker accompanies with homogeneity and individuality with superb horn and violin solos, allowing the voice of Kateřina Kněžíková to unfold in splendour. We are pleased to announced the signing of the exceptional mezzo-soprano and contralto Stephanie Wake-Edwards!

Represented globally (excl. NA) by Senior Vice President and Head of Europe Vocal, Sam Snook from IMG Artists, and in North America by Fletcher Artist Management, Stephanie is recognised worldwide for her "mezzo darkening to contralto depths" (Opera Now).

Stephanie is a winner of the Concours Bordeaux Médoc Lyrique, a graduate of the presitigous Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Ballet And Opera, England’s representative for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, and a current ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Stephanie’s performances of the 2024/25 season as part of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble include the title role in Carmen, La Marchesa Melibea in Il viaggio a Reims, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Mary in Der fliegende Holländer, the Page in Salome, and more. Later in the season, Stephanie will appear as Polina in Pique Dame with Garsington Opera and Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in concert as part of the BBC Proms.
