Following the success of his recent debut at Staatsoper Unter den Linden conducting Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten with Staatskapelle Berlin, Constantin Trinks was invited to takeover subscription concerts with Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse – in programmes featuring Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten (Symphonic Fantasy), Der Rosenkavalier Suite, and Mozart arias with soprano Siobhan Stagg:

"The CD 'Operette Gala' by Kateřina Kněžíková and Adam Plachetka is beautifully dramaturgically balanced, with not only the most famous operetta hits [...] and they are also very well-interpreted. Kateřina Kněžíková certainly had an easier time choosing songs, because soprano arias can be found in every operetta. "The passion for, and investment in, what Jaime Martin gives to his role as Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor is evident not only in the exuberance of his motions but in the linguistic formation of his interpretation. The shape and range of his hand motions in one passage, crafting the lines for strings and solo clarinet, are matched in sheer panache by the metaphors he uses to direct his players toward the quality of sound he wants. And, of course, the most impact can often be achieved with the very least output. At one point, he simply turned around with his fists pressed against his hips and exclaimed, “Amazing. Isn’t this amazing music?”

We had the opportunity to see the inner workings of Mahler’s Symphony #2 – “Resurrection”, to be performed by the MSO under Martín’s baton.

Out now on Alpha Classics / Outhere Music new music from Christian Immler, bass-baritone and legendary pianist Helmut Deutsch: Be Still My Heart presents works by two little-known Viennese composers. Robert Gund (1865-1927), born in Switzerland, a pianist, teacher and composer who was highly regarded in Vienna but whose works have since been forgotten, and his younger colleague Wilhelm Grosz (1894-1939), who was writing highly successful songs for the cinema in Berlin at the time of Gund’s death. Grosz then emigrated to the United States in 1939, when his music became influenced by both post-Romanticism and jazz. This programme, conceived and performed here by Christian Immler and Helmut Deutsch, both masters of the German Lied, includes many songs that are recorded for the first time. Grosz's New York songs have inspired many cover versions by such 20th-century musical greats as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and the Beatles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIIWKj0sFFk

" Trinks conducted this substantial programme in place of Tarmo Peltokoski. Mozart conducted by the hands, Strauss with the baton. Dynamic, expressive and smiling, he brings out and enhances all the nuances of the scores and the rubato phrasing. His Mozart is full of pleasure, the timbre of the orchestra clear, light and sparkling, with a particularly lively Nozze overture [and he] gave Strauss's music the strength and brilliance it required [...] the sound rich, the nuances colourful, filling the sound space in thunderous forte, but the woodwinds and strings displayed both tender piani and great lyrical flights, along with the harps bringing out the more dreamlike passages of the score. "Guest Conductor Paul Watkins spoke at length, sharing his delight at working with these Robert McDuffie Center for Strings young musicians, before launching into Béla Bartók’s Divertimento for Strings. The opening Allegro non troppo was taut and assured, the dance-like motifs sprinkled about with panache. The second movement Molto adagio was desolate and eerie, with cries of terror punctuating the uneasiness of the ever-building tension. The finale Allegro Assai was a return to the happy mood, with mercurial “bounce” adding energetic joy. This was a superb performance that any ensemble would have been proud of, and Mr. Watkins deserves kudos for his leadership. The enthusiasm was felt in the Carnegie Hall audience, who reacted with a standing ovation, which was well deserved."
