Happy birthday to Roberto, one of our best friends in Puglia. The day we met him we realized (while drinking homemade limoncello on the terrace of his b&b) that we shared the same philosophy on hosting people in Puglia in the most authentic and local way. Since then we have had many clients stay with Roberto, enjoy meals on that gorgeous terrace and tour the countryside with him in this classic cinquecento. Auguri Roberto!

A year ago today we were watching the poppies pop outside a friend’s trullo in the countryside. Grateful to have these memories and next spring we will be there to appreciate it even more than we always have.

A photo from last April - so much has changed this year but some very important things have not. This bench is still there, the spring will come, the flowers will bloom. We will sit here again and look out into endless blue and forget all our troubles.

Fresh lettuce like this should be dressed with olive oil and a little sea salt - the simplest of salads that lets each of the ingredients shine. In Italy the salad is often eaten after the main course. Why? There are several theories on this, but many say it aids in digestion, and any vinegar you might use cleanses the palate after the main meal, and should be eaten after the wine is done so as not to compete ruin the palette. 🥬🥬🥬

In Italy all beaches are public property. That is great news as it means you can use any of the country’s gorgeous beaches. But there is also a ‘lido’ culture, the lido is where you rent an umbrella and chairs and there is a shower, changing rooms and a restaurant or bar - basically everything you need for a full day at the beach. On a gorgeous day like today we opt for the Lido, to dig in and do some serious relaxing until the sun goes down. ☀️

It is spring here in Puglia, with Artichokes, cherries, peas, fava beans and more. They are almost too beautiful to eat! Almost 😉Thanks for the kitchen inspiration ;)

On our artisan workshop we see the ancient roots of art in the region and also learn how current day use local traditions in their craft. These vases are a great example - drying outside in the sun in the traditional way they have since Medieval times.

One of our favorite activities in is a morning stroll through backstreets in the old town. Today we came across bougainvillea in a color we had never seen before - so bright it looks electric.

There is apparently an article in the NYT about how the aperol spritz is ‘not a good drink’. We respectfully beg to differ! Just to confirm, we had an tonight and... yep! It is still a great way to start . Granted the quality of spritz can vary widely, but when we head to we know we will always get the best. Their apero food spread is amazing too!

This morning the church bells woke me up at 8am, so I headed out for an exploration of the quiet Sunday streets. I love that most businesses are closed in Southern Italy on Sunday, it forces a slower day and appreciation of the moment. The gorgeous beach doesn’t hurt either :)

On the farm in neighboring Calabria we find these 🌶 hanging in any available space - more than enough to make a big batch of Bomba ( 💣) Calabrese to spread on bread or use in pasta puttanesca. Or, as our Calabrese Nonno does, just take a whole pepper off for every meal and alternate eating it every other bite with whatever food is being served. 🔥 🍝 👍🏻 ⠀

“Fare tuffo” can mean to take a dip or take a dive. Either way jumping from the rocks into deep turquoise water is a tradition in , and the coastal road outside Monopoli has countless spots like this to pull off and do a from the rocks in between stretches of sandy beach. # crystalwaters

The secret to amazing foccacia?
