The Well-Travelled Postcard A travel blog by Virginia Stuart-Taylor about travelling, studying, working and living abroad, covering 50 countries (and counting...)

www.TheWell-TravelledPostcard.com Through this blog I want to inspire you to explore the world, by sharing the things I’ve learnt along the way about travelling, studying, working and living abroad. I also write about some of the amazing places I’ve encountered so far in over 65 different countries. This blog is for anyone with a passion for travel, and for anyone who’s interested in travelling or

living abroad. I blog about:

A whole host of destinations. Experiences / courses / festivals / opportunities / jobs abroad. The essentials for moving abroad. Postcards discovered on my travels. And whatever else catches my imagination. There are two main items I absolutely have to pick up on my travels, the first item being a work of art (a painting, a drawing, even the odd sculpture), and the second being a postcard. Covering the walls of all the various rooms I’ve lived in, in all of the various countries, a growing number of postcards have followed me around, always reminding me of past adventures. Hence the name of this blog. Like this page and follow my blog on Twitter, Instagram and Youtube, and sign up to receive new blog posts by email.

In 2022 I was surprised and incredibly honoured to be invited back to my former school, as Chief Guest at the school’s annual Prize Giving ceremony! As well as giving out prizes to the highest-performing pupils in front of their proud parents, the Chief Guest also makes a speech, and I chose to speak about how my time at the school had equipped me for life, travels and careers beyond school. I framed my speech with this quote by Mary Oliver, which is an excellent one for us all to consider at the beginning of a new year: “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

I spoke particularly about the importance of grasping opportunities to travel with both hands, and of stepping through open doors to experiment as much as you can and discover your life’s purpose. I explained how travel had shaped and developed me as an individual, and led me to where I am today, via all the amazing life experiences I’ve sought out and been fortunate to have.

I was absolutely thrilled to hear afterwards that pupils, teachers and even parents had felt inspired and touched by my speech, and I feel so incredibly excited for the bright future and the endless possibilities ahead of these promising young people!

Volunteering and supporting young people is one of my very favourite things to do and it energises me so much - through giving careers talks in schools, mentoring, and offering work experience. So participating in that Prize Giving ceremony was really such an honour and a real highlight of 2022 for me!

I’ve already booked in 4 career talks so far for 2023 with schools across the UK, and I’ll be speaking about languages, gap years, studying abroad, and international careers. If you haven’t already, I thoroughly encourage you to contact your local and former schools/universities to see how you can volunteer - it’s such an excellent and easy way to give back to your community!

New (and final!) blog post: The 10-Year Anniversary of The Well-Travelled Postcard, and What Next?

New post! 📝 Growing up with The Well-Travelled Postcards: An interior design idea for travellers

🗺 They’re the namesake of this blog, as my postcards have followed me around countries and continents, decorating bedroom walls throughout my 20s with memories and mementos, feeding my wanderlust.

Over 4 years since I last had my signature postcards blue-tacked to a wall in Sweden, I’ve finally (!) found a grown-up way to display them again, that’s more in tune with my 30s.

🖼 What do you think of the result? Today’s blog post is a step-by-step to achieve the same look. Having gathered the postcards myself from far flung corners of the globe, these mean more to me than a lot of the other artwork hanging on my walls, and I’m really happy with them!

I’d love to know what you think, which of the 3 frames you prefer, and what other travel-themed art work or decoration you have?

New post! The latest in my series of Well-Travelled Paintings: The Greek island of Ithaca seen from the water

This was a commission based on a photo I took from a yacht during a blissful day sailing around Ithaca, having set off from the larger neighbouring island of Kefalonia, where I was lucky to spend a whole month this spring. ⛵️☀️🌊

I divided the painting over 3 days (8 hours in total) and I spent a huge amount of that time painting the land alone, which was particularly detailed! I had to quell my inner perfectionist's urge to paint every minute detail of the houses, so I hope they don't look too basic or child-like. What do you think of it?

Earlier this year I created this blog post series of Well-Travelled Paintings, to share my progress with re-learning to paint, to draw out the memories of the places and travel destinations I paint…

I recently became a charity trustee for the first time, for the charity Raleigh International, who some might remember I volunteered with in rural Nepal for 4 months in 2016. I’ve been over the moon about the role, right through the whole application process and into the trustee board meetings themselves!

Trusteeship is a role I’d heard of others doing, mainly people of my parents’ generation, but over the last 1-2 years I’d also noted a number of young women I knew of my own age joining trustee boards too, and I started to investigate it myself. Would you like to support a charity as a trustee? This blog post is for anyone equally intrigued, but not sure where to start!

Diversifying charity boards is so important and can only be done by encouraging more and more people to join them, so do also share this article with anyone who you think would be interested, or who would make a great trustee!

New post! Setting 'New Year' resolutions in September: How to seize that post-summer energy to help yourself and help change the world

This is inspired by a post I first wrote 6 years ago which I still stand by, about why September is a better month than January to tackle your resolutions and goals. It includes 9 ideas for resolutions to set yourself for the rest of the year, that do yourself good while doing good for the planet too! 🌍

After a busy summer kept me away from the blog, I’ve just spent 10 days on holiday by the sea in south-west France, on what feels like my annual DIY retreat. Like all good retreats, I am now feelin…

Although I've been skydiving once before, I'd never been paragliding. One day in Kefalonia I saw a paraglider swoop over me while I relaxed by the pool, and I impulsively decided to try it for myself!

Here are the highlights of a 20-minute paraglide over the incredible Myrtos Beach on Kefalonia's west coast with Joachim Skondras from No Borders. Myrtos beach is famous for its turquoise waters due to sediment in the white stones, but this day the entire bay was a light blue/turquoise - a truly spectacular sight. Watch out for the "tricks" towards the end which took my breath away!

A special bonus episode of The Well-Travelled Podcast is now live! 🎙 I recorded Series 1 of my podcast in 2020, but I also record one-off bonus episodes from my travels as and when I’m away, reminiscent of the postcards that originally inspired this blog and its name. This bonus episode comes live from my month-long trip to the Greek island of Kefalonia 🇬🇷 – my first trip abroad in 8 months due to the pandemic.

It’s both an insight into the uncertainty, stress and challenges of travelling abroad from the UK during a pandemic, and also a postcard of the island, offering a guide to the best villages, beaches, hikes, restaurants, vineyards and activities in Kefalonia. These snippets will put you in my shoes and transport you to an almost empty deserted in the Ionian Sea, to show you how I’m spending this month in paradise and very possibly even put Kefalonia on your travel wishlist...

Follow the link below to find the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, but it’s also available on whichever other podcast platform you prefer. Have a listen, rate it, and let me know your thoughts!

New post! The challenges of travelling abroad in 2021 (and how the pandemic extinguished the true traveller in me, and what that means for my identity)

This post also covers the many hurdles I overcame to travel from the UK to Greece! 🇬🇧 -> 🇬🇷

New post! This one's a little different from my usual paintings, as this is a full-scale 'Well-Travelled Mural' of the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces in Longsheng, in southern China. I painted it over several months in 2008-9 and it's became a real feature of the bedroom. Do you like the idea of a mural or not? Would you paint one like this?

New post! The sixth painting in my series of The Well-Travelled Paintings is from the Côte d'Argent, a 200km-long sandy beach in south-west France 🇫🇷

I took the original photo of my mother & sister back in September 2020, walking along the scenic route to the local market for a session indulging in oysters, calamars and crémant 🦪🦑🥂, during my only foreign adventure since the pandemic began!

I've been travelling there since I was a young girl to stay in a pine-wood bungalow belonging to my mother, amidst a pine forest sheltered from the ocean by huge sand dunes. 🌊 So this painting holds a lot of memories for us

New post! The sixth painting in my series of The Well-Travelled Paintings is of the Atlantic coast of France, on the Côte d'Argent. It features my mother and sister walking along the beach on their return from market, where we'd eaten local oysters and sipped crémant. It's a walk I've done since childhood and the Atlantic Ocean is a brilliant backdrop. As usual, in the post I discuss the challenges I had in painting it, with humans being my greatest difficulty as a painter.

New post! The fifth painting in my series of The Well-Travelled Paintings is from Spetses, one of the Saronic Islands in Greece. New post! The fourth painting in my new series of The Well-Travelled Paintings is of Valmorel in the French Alps 🇫🇷

It was my first time ski-touring and the post talks about the little-known resort and my experience of the niche form of skiing, a hybrid between hiking and downhill skiing. 🏔⛷

I gave this as a birthday card to a ski-loving friend, as a memento of the Alps. What do you think?

New post! The third painting in my series of The Well-Travelled Paintings is of Mondello Beach in Palermo, Sicily 🇮🇹

I adore cities with beaches and this stunning beach is only 30-minutes away from Palermo city centre, so I’ve included a few more photos to show you Palermo. I visited this beach in 2017 on the final day of my year living abroad for my Master’s, before I moved back to London, so a lot of emotions were in play that day.

In this post I also analyse the many imperfections in this painting - I love painting water but this one was a real learning curve and there’s plenty to improve on! What do you think?

New post! 10 actions everyone can take to support gender equality, after a week of events to celebrate International Women's Day . These actions apply to men just as much as to women and all genders, and please do share!

This post also reflects on the past week's events here in the UK, which have been painful and draining for many British women
