I usually shoot wildlife in their natural environment, but a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop at the Denver Zoo through Mike's Camera. This is an image I took of a male Mandrill. Mandrills are native to the equatorial rain forests of Africa. The males are known for their very colorful faces.

On International Leopard Day I find myself having to exercise restraint in posting leopard photos. Anyone who has been on one of my safaris knows my great love of leopards. So I have chosen just three of my favorite leopard, the incomparable Fig, who is no longer with us, and one of Ndoto, the leopard I have most recently photographed.

And to all my friends in the Mara and the entire country of Kenya, my heart is with all of you as you deal with the flooding. Please stay safe and you are in my continued prayers.

Ndoto is one of the resident leopardesses in the northern Maasai Mara Conservancies. In January 2024, we were with her and witnessed just how cheeky she can be.

Lion cubs are always fun to photograph. All credit goes to my guide Nel Ololenchungei Kasoe who spotted these lions in heavy brush from over a kilometer away.

The heavy rains and warm weather made for long very long grass over most of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It can make for beautiful pictures, but difficult focusing. It also means that most of the grazing animals are found in areas of shorter grass as the tall grass is too difficult for them to eat. Properly managed grazing programs can benefit wildlife as well as the local communities.

Note the two little cubbies on the left side of the first image.

It's always good to grow knowledge and skills in areas that are not your forte. So with that in mind I attended a macro photography workshop given by Mike's Camera. We went to the Denver Botanical Gardens to photograph flowers, plants, a small wildlife. I had a great time and have found a renewed passion for macro photography.

I am headed back to Kenya in two weeks, leading two safaris, the first ones for me since the world was turned upside down. I am looking forward to seeing old friends there and adding more photos to my portfolio.
